  2. Went out tonight for only the third time this season. Had a feeling that they are starting to move. On my stand for about 1 hr when a little 4pt comes down through my clover plot and stops broadside about 12 yards away. He is too small so just watch him and he keeps looking behind him. So I turn my head and here comes a nice 6 pt and a huge 10pt. They put their heads down and do a little sparing, the little 4 pt runs off with his tail between his legs. The 10 point goes into the thick stuff behind me about 15 yards and disappears (boy, they are like ghosts). The 6 point then comes boradside about 12 yards and it's just too good a shot to pass up. Let the arrow fly and hit him right in the shoulder. He flinches and runs about 30 yards and drops, but can't see him. I know it was a good hit but like a good bow hunter I wait. After about 20 mins another buck comes along, another nice 6pt and goes to the exact spot where I hit the other 6pt and he start smelling the blood trail. I watch him for about 10 min then time to get down and find my buck. Dead right where I saw him drop. Another good year. Man I love bow hunting, don't see deer like this during gun season.

  9. Guy's all your comments are right on the mark, life is too short. I turned 62 last month and now feel I am on the downward side of the hill. It's a little startling a position to be in knowing you don't know how many hunting seasons you have left. But my health is good and I have no physical disabilities thank god. So every time I have something to do that that prevents me from going up state to hunt I rearrange my schedule. If I don't go now then when will I, my time is now. Just like Joe said about his dad, I think too many of us put things off till we retire and some don't make it. So we have to live every day and do the things that make us happy remember tomorrow is never a sure thing. With that said good hunting to all.

  10. I have always made time for the things that I love to do... my dad passed at 59 and was the "I can't wait 'til retiement so I can do all the things I've always wanted to do" unfortunately retirement never came for him... I have always been a do it now type of guy and my father use to hate that... about 2 weeks before he died he said to me.. "If I had it all to do over again I'd do it just like you"... I made myself the promise that I will never say that... if I die tomorrow.. I go knowing that I've had a pretty good ride while it lasted... no regrets.. I'm going hunting!!

  12. A deer is not a big challenge to bullet construction, not nearly as much as big heavy boned animals like elk. Any factory load that groups well in your rifle will perform well on deer from point blank to 300 yards, or probably farther. If I were shooting factory loads in a 30-06, I would buy the cheapest ones that I could find in 150, 165, or 180 grains that group well in my rifle. Sight them in about 2-3 inches high at 100 yards. Hold dead center on the ribcage anywhere from 20 to 250 yards and squeeze the trigger..Dead deer. That's all there is to it. I would try Remington green corelocts first.. Chances are you won't have to go any farther.

  15. Love it. I can't say I agree with a statewide AR. Some areas with low deer densities need to adjust their deer management accordingly. I am not a "horn hunter" like so many anti - AR guys like to call us pro - AR guys. For me it isn't about having to kill something to make me feel successful. I hunt almost every day of the season. From bow opener to muzzle closing. Last yr I didn't shoot a deer until muzzleloader; an adult doe. Not because I didn't have the chance, but because I love being in the woods. It's a great feeling letting an animal go, that you know you could shoot, and hoping he makes it. Really, what challenge is in shooting probly the dumbest animal in the woods, a yearling buck during the rut. There's no doubt in my mind that thru the last 6 yrs of me letting young bucks go has benefited hunters who may not pass on bucks in the neighboring properties. I have exclusive hunting right to almost 500 acres, and post and patrol another 300 +. I know I got it better then most. There's plenty of deer around. The problem is age structure. I don't know alot of guys that put spike horns and 4 pointers on their walls so the hunter who says horns don't matter yet has bigger bucks on their wall is conflicting. Meat hunter or not, their is something magical about adult bucks. Are heart races more and our smiles are bigger when we get to harvest one........The gentics argument doesn't work neither, for the most part. There's no way of knowing what a spike horn or 4 pointers genetics are.Once they're dead it doesn't matter. They could of been late born fawns. Also, the does carry the same genetics as the bucks. Thier's a misconception for some that spike don't grow into big racks. Science has proven that wrong. The 3 point rule isn't perfect by far. It's taking out alot of young bucks that should be passed, but it's a step in the right direction. For me I only shoot adult deer. Buck or doe. I take the time to know what I'm shooting at, and if it's something I really don't wanna shoot; I don't. Theirs not alot of use who "need" to shoot deer to survive. Enjoy the outdoors. Don't just shoot a deer because it's a legal deer. My 2 cents......
