  2. What a night in PA! Youth rifle, got out of work at 3, got in stand at 4:30, shot doe at 5:15, ran to car, traded the rifle for the crossbow, 4 spikes chasing doe and all fighting in front of us. shot the buck at 6:05! His first buck. Prefect 30 yard shot. Saw a nice 8pt and 7 doe on drive out!

  5. I shot a 6 pt chasing a doe. Not ideal but I figured as the season went it was the right thing. Nephew shot his first buck a two point! lol We took them to the processor tonight man there are some real nice bucks in there. Oh and I shot a big button buck last hour of bow season.

  6. Brother got this nice 8 pt tonight. Chasing a doe. We have him on camera the night before doing the same thing. 30 yards xbow. Pass through shoulder. He said it did a back flip before it died. Crazy.

  10. My son and grandson are hunting the whole day in Geneseo . I am going to do an afternoon hunt there and change the camera batteries . So far my son has seen 9 deer but nothing close enough to shoot with the crossbow . My son shot a nice wide rack buck on his property yesterday in Italy Valley .

  11. Not much of a Deer hunter these days and usually from the middle of the season on, but last night I decided to get out the first thing in the morning. Got bundled up and grabbed the Howa Superlight 6.5 Creedmoor and headed out. A frosty start to the day and as the daylight started coming on the woods began to come alive. Walked to one of my favorite Squirrel hunting spots and sat down on a stump. Squirrels and Blue Jays were in the Beech trees gathering mast, I could hear Turkeys talking. Was not sitting for five minutes and saw a Doe walking through the trees, I have a permit but I let her slide. Then a parade of Turkeys appeared started toward me and low and behold a Buck was walking along in front of them. Put the crosshairs behind the front shoulder and shot, he hunched up and took off running but I knew he would not go too far. I walked back home and got my Airedale pup Ruff and brought him to the spot the Buck was walking when I shot. There was no visible blood but I put the pup on the track and away we went, not 50 yards and there he was deader than a doornail, A good introduction to Deer tracking for young Ruff, I believe he will handle Deer tracking quite well. Good part he was not far from a logging road so I got my tractor and drove close enough for an easy drag and flopped him into the loader bucket and brought him home to dress out. One of my shortest Deer hunts ever. Al

  13. At 7:30 I had a nice little 8 point poking along and stopped 30 yards downhill from me. Slightly quarter too but I’m not confident to shoot 30 without being level with the deer. So I took my chance to see if he would turn and come up the logging path towards me, or pass behind me. He chose to go behind, and slowly picked his way along but seeming focused on what he was doing. At an even steeper downhill angle he was quartered away at 27 yards. I even stepped down a rung on my ladder to try for a better angle. I steadied myself and as he passed behind a big tree, when he stepped out there were several small branches I worried might mess up the shot so yet again this season I passed. Moments later here came two nice does from where he went. They stood about 5 yards from the base of my tree so I couldn’t do anything without getting busted. They got nervous and walked off from where they came. I just did some more pruning and now have much clearer shot to that trail. And for the record, I tried to grunt at him when he was waking off and he paid it no mind.

  14. I was once told when a man walks into the timber he carries much more weight then he does walking out. As a boy I never got it I figured the goal was to be packing the weight of a harvest. But as I got older it all made perfect sense. While your sitting there 15 feet up a tree you have no choice but to think about the things weighing on your mind. You come to terms with all the rights and wrongs, you make light of the dark times and pray for the good. What I owe to the woods I could never repay. Its where I have become who I am, its made me appreciate life and its beauty, and most of all its kept me going....

  16. Buck followed that does trail from this am at 0815, decided to take him. Got me excited and that’s all I needed. 15 yard shot went 30 and fell over. Onto PA.

  17. Here’s the buck he took, passed on two spikes looking for one of the funky ones. This one unfortunately already lost the weird spike out the side of the head somehow. I’ll look closer tomorrow

  19. We have a farm at the beginning of my road. The houses and land are rented to out-of-state hunters. Really nice people that come and go. As I was leaving for work yesterday I noticed a pickup driving along the cut corn, tailgate down and this monster inside. I stopped thinking they would come up the road but they were actually going to gut it in the hedgerow. I left but stopped in on my way home. First off they are such a nice family of hunters and get the job done. The wife shot this in the evening and they backed out. High double lung shot. Found it in the morning just by the way the leaves were scuffed up. It bedded next to a big log. No ground shrinkage here. 13 points non typical. Deer has everything you want! I was so happy for them. They were packing up to move onto a new lease and meeting up with family for thanksgiving. He gave me a half hour to talk about the deer. Congrats to them. I must say that is the biggest I have seen in my area.

  20. I walked into a barnes & nobles and asked the manager where I could find Trumps newest book on how he's going to deport the illegals. She told me get the "F" out and stay out ! I said that's the one, do you have it in paperback ? SJC

  21. 4:30 yesterday a “doe” comes trotting down a trail right below me and stops, talk about luck. I look thru the peep site at full draw and quickly notice 1 little spike antler. Surprisingly big body for a little spike. I let down, he caught the movement above him, went Oh Crap and bolted away.

  22. I have had this happen a few times over the years. This buck is leaving a sanctuary bedding area and crossing a field and road to go up a big hill to get to a wood lot of acorns and a small corn and alfalfa field. He does all this and still gets back to his bed well before daylight. Pretty sure this is the same buck but hard to be 100% on it. Pretty cool animals.

  24. I was in A double ladder stand . I saw 2 bucks coming from the neighbor's North property . A bunch of saplings block any shot But I Had the scope on in the bigger buck as it was walking along . i expected to take a shoulder shot but there was a dip in the ground . when it hit the opening , I shot and it dropped on the spot . upon further review , i shot him in the neck as he was in the dip . No meat wasted . some time you just get lucky . It was only about a 90 yard with the NEF 20-06 single shot . Here is the buck laying . I zoomed in on it as best I could with the phone camera .You can see the deer laying in the middle of the picture between the 2 big trees .The entrance Hole was hard to spot But not the exit hole .

  29. It opened up this morning. Had a few nice big bucks on cam and I saw 2 shooters today. Had all I could do to not take a big doe. They were under me at 10 yards. 3 big does and 3 yearlings. Shooter buck was close so I held back. Next few days should be good!

  30. I feel the same way . At 83 it gets tougher to climb out of bed at zero dark thirty and the drive 50 miles to a hunting spot . I could hunt 10 miles away in Walworth but at my age I don't hunt unless one of my sons is with me . I didn't get to be this old by being too stupid .

  31. One of the best Sundays in years here. Took the grand kids with me for the afternoon hunt. We had an action packed afternoon, just falling short of complete. ( No harvest) Cherish every moment they can spend a field with me. Their going to be some great future hunters.

  34. Forgot about the clocks so I am up an hour too early. Very excited about my first sit of the year this morning. Going to the swamp stand. Took a nice 8 from that stand last year around this time of year. Hope to start seeing some bucks down soon. Good luck to everyone going out. Last year’s buck Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  35. They are just starting to get up on their feet in daylight hours. I always stay out of the woods until Halloween or when I start getting mature target bucks on cameras. Time to get after it after this crazy heat gets back out of here.

  37. At 5:30 I hear crunch crunch crunch and I stand up. I get my bow ready and here comes a healthy spike of about 12” each side, with the right side a small extra point, making him a 3 pointer. He took his time coming up my footsteps all the way to my stand, and then passed me about 10yards. First quartering towards , then broad side, and then quartering away as he passed me. Easy shot, but I chose to pass. With it supposed to get to 70 degrees again this week, it was gonna either have to be a big buck or I was not shooting. Then I head more crunching and see a buck about same size as the first but with only one 4-5 inch spike on the right side. He stayed behind me about 40 yards and stood there for a long time watching the first spike. The first day spike went past, the second spike stayed there staring, and then down in the gully behind the single spike I see another buck. This one was a bit bigger a deer and turned out to be a narrow 6 pointer. They both got antsy with the wind swirling and finally trooped off up the hill. So even though I did not shoot, it was still a lot of fun. It has been a long time since I saw three bucks together. It looks like this may be a fun season.

  38. I have killed a half dozen Deer with a neck shot and they all dropped right where they stood. As for the ethical part several factors come into play. Distance is a big one, I use the neck shot for relatively short shots, under 100 yards. A firearm that is capable of precise bullet placement with a good hunting bullet. A good steady rest with total confidence in my ability to make the shot. I aim for the center anywhere on the neck, I think it is a fairly big target and an easy shot to make when one has the right circumstances. Al

  39. Gray squirrels, red squirrels, owl and fisher, is the extent of it so far this morning. A few distant shots otherwise dead quiet. If nothing happens here in a little bit I may just go back to the house and “kill” a cup of coffee. Lol

  43. Frankly, I really have no interest in what is happening on the other site. One hunting site is all I have time for, and this is the one I started with and this is the one I will stay with. So what they do over there is really of no concern to me.

  44. Yeah I'm ready. We lost one oldtimer this year which will put a damper on things. 88 years still going strong and had an accident in his barn. Doing something he shouldnt of be doing. My buddy Steve is a detective and is on a huge case, he can't make it. My camp usually has 6 hunters we will have 5. We will have a 14 year old up here hunting with his grandfather! Weather looks real sketchy next week. Stands are set everyone knows where they are going.
