  1. I should add that I have no biases on caliber. If someone wants to use a large caliber go right ahead; I confess that I also use a 308. I've even used a 720 caliber to take many a deer, though I haven't done that since my county stated allowing rifle hunting. It's the "marginal" references to a 243, 25-06, etc. that bug me.
  2. These big caliber arguments are contradictory. They'll arc more as they get out there thus range estimation has to be spot on. A 243 shoots flatter so its more forgiving. Sighted 2" high at 100 yds it will be at 2" low at about 230 yds. Point & shoot, no worries mate. At 400 yds, it has the energy of a 44mag at the muzzle. Exactly how dead does a deer need get? This information is easily accessible on the internet plus you can find ballistic calculators for free. I've used Www.airguns.net/trajectory.php by copying and pasting the data in excel, you can taylor a chart to your load/riflle. In short, what Bubba said.
  3. I just didn't want anyone to be led astray if they decided to do a build. The rules in NY are too complicated and unnecessary. Hope you all are letting your legislators now your opinions.
  4. In case any of you are eyeing Single_shot's setup, I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be legal in NY state.
  5. There's a book "Tan Your Hide" that I've heard good things about.

    Craw/cray fish

I can't remember ever seeing one. If you want to be sure, call your regional ECO.
  7. Private land is not necessarily safer than public land.
  8. The guy wants a bolt; enough with the static on every other action type imaginable. I also wouldn't fret much about losing/forgetting a detachable magazine, a fella could leave his ammo at home to. Make a list, check it twice. In the unlikely event that a magazine fails you still have a single shot, if one does their part thart all that's needed. They're all good guns. Check them out at a shop & I bet one will feel a little righter than the others.
  9. Some poacher wanted the antlers? in April??? I'm skeptical of your story.
  10. I suggest finding a Forester. They'll come up with a plan, give you an idea when to expect to be able to harvest again, require erosion prevention measures, put the timber out to a list of bidders, etc.
  11. Know your rounds limits and know your limits. There's really nothing else to discuss. Whatever did this deadhorse (or should I say dead deer) do to deserve such a bad beating?

    TICS!

Used to be that way, years ago. They're becoming more and more common upstate.
  13. I expect the only concern would be infection or losing an eye. Drove one into my skull years ago. Still here though my wife thinks I have Asperger's. Maybe that's what caused it.
  14. I have a cheap Stack-On to keep the kids safe and I carry the ArmsCare Plus insurance that's endorsed by the NRA. A few of my guns have a little setimental value but nothing I wouldn't get over.
  15. Or you could field butcher, put the steak meat & roasts in one garbage bag, put the stew/hamburger meat in another, toss them in a cooler and finish the trimming, cutting & wrapping at home. I used to have an S-10 blazer that I'd hang a deer off the back of by running a rope through the back of the roof rack. Real tough getting the thing hung by myself though. I'd be concerned the rope might rough up the clear coat too.
  16. Sounds like good advice. The only time I've had that happen was when I installed an aftermarket spring kit in my Redhawk to lighten the trigger pull. The kit came with 3 springs. The lightest did what your buddies pistol is doing. The medium has always worked well. That's where the weak spring thought comes from if a good scrubbing doesn't clear up the problem.
  17. Sometimes if you turn the round a little and try again they'll fire. Also could be a week spring. Are they factory or hand loads? Check that primers are getting seated fully if hand loads.
  18. Do any of you think that the NYSDEC promotes unethical hunting? It is legal to use "any centerfire rifle" for a reason (page 24, Implement Descriptions for Big Game Hunting in the prospectus). The unethical part comes in if a hunter isn't aware of the ballistics of the particular firearm being used (i.e. shoots to far), is in denial about their own shooting abilities (takes a shot that it is unlikely to place their bullet where it needs to be from the particular shooting position they're using) or makes a poor choice on the shooting situation (i.e. uses a lighter caliber on a quartering toward animal which even with a large caliber magnum is a waste as it would destroy a lot of meat, confuses their firearm with a bush hog, etc.). You double lung a deer with a 223, 243, 300 win magnum and you'll get the same result; dead deer not to far from where it was shot.
  19. Numbers are way down in southern herkimer county.
  20. IMHO, there should be no fee for pistol permit applications. Why should we have to pay to exercise a constitutional right?
  21. This state really isn't that far behind Cali. when it comes to restrictions of our rights. Please, contact your legislators on pro-gun/pro-hunting issues.
  22. Need a few more of those anti's to get eaten before they'll see the light.
  23. Either will work. It's shot placement that counts.
