Lets keep it on the low side of the handguns. I am refering to 9mm, 44 mag, 45, 38. If you start to go up in calibers like the 454, 50's etc. Yes they are much more like a low rifle round... But I don't want to use a handgun that all most blows my wrist off shooting it... Kinda makes those follow up shots I like so much impossible... Those were not mentioned here as deer rounds and I would rather have that in a rifle for easy follow up shots.

I agree with you WNYBUCK, many deer have been taken by handguns. It just has some limitations and knowing them is key!!! My main point is better calibers for large game exist and are better suited for large game in general... A handgun is not the prefered choice for most big game hunters. My main reason for using a handgun round in my rifle is wieght of the gun, follow up shot and easy of use. EX: you can walk with the barrel down in one hand and not have the barrel hit the ground, no sling needed gun in hand ready to shoot...

I have to agree with Ants on this one. Most pistol rounds are just a little shy on the power side IMO while using a handgun for deer. Talking 9mm, 38, 44, 45 rounds in general. (I hunt large deer usually over 200 lbs) Better off using a larger caliber in a handgun if possible. 308 is nice and judging by a recent post on here they are accurate up to 100+ yards in a handgun... I like my 44 mag for its short barrel, (model 94AE) quick follow up shot plus it is much easyer to carry than my 30-06 or 308 semi. But I would not use this round in a hangun for deer... The rounds I shoot are not designed for handguns and have a higher velocity making penetration fairly good yet as many said here it does not always pass through... Use the proper caliber for the prey you are after!!! And yes as always shot placement is key no matter what round you use... I hunt mainly for deer yet I have large bear in the area i hunt and would feel very underpowered if I had to take one with my 44 mag... If bear was my prey the 30-06 would be my primary weapon... Again I think Ants is on the money here, match your caliber for your prey... Most hand guns are just not good for deer, will they work sure but a better matched caliber for you prey will result in less tracking, better penetration and a quick ethical kill IMO... A 22 can kill a deer yet it's not very practicle, remember penetration with larger animals is key. If you hit a bone with a smaller slower trajectory it might not get pasted the bone yet a faster and larger caliber will smash the bone and keep on going... Force = mass times acceleration... Faster larger bullets cause more damage plain and simple... I think speed of your trajectory is the biggest factor with penetration beyond a foot being the minimum for ethical kills. My 44 mag is just on the border as far as I am concerned for deer in a rifle. I contemplate getting a bolt action 308 for better penetration but can not give up my lever action at this point in time... Will a handgun work for deer? Yes but much better calibers exist for hunting large game that can be used in a handgun... I had a guy who used a 357 Mag due to a double hip surgery and he did take deer with it but he was a dam good shot and had been hunting for over 50 years... Again much better rounds for hunting exist, handgun rounds were designed to stop people not deer. Balistics show my 44 Mag shoots 1160FPS with 300 grain federal ammo. This give me confidence up to about 100 yards, (that slow and heavy bullet drops fast!) beyond that is a crap shoot depending on shot placement. Still hunting you are more likely to get a shot at less than 50 yards and that is why I stick with this round... If i had larger more open area's to shoot I would go with a 308 or the 30-06 for extra long range... Your impact at longer distances would have much better results as the FPS is more than doubled with these bullets equalling more ft/lb impact at the target. JMO...

I think my 1st godchild is old enough this year and plan on seeing if his father is going to take him out. I will find out this weekend. His younger brother has the itch yet he has not caught the hunting bug yet. He likes to shoot so I am hoping a weekend of small game will peak his interest instead of video games...

I understand Joe, my X-girlfriend hated hunting and outdoor things but that was my time,my only set back was she always wished I did not get a deer, and her wish always came true... No way in hell she would have worked a trap line for me WOW Doc you have a real winner!!! I don't think I know a J.A.P. who would... But they are great at other things, cooking was not one of them lol...
-
I like lighter calibers for differant reasons yet a 9 mm is out of the question for deer. Would be fine for small game but bad penetration and small wounds make for long tracking and many lost deer if this was a commonly used caliber. Like many have said here it will work if close and you place the shot correctly. But there are many better choices in caliber for deer and 9mm is not one of them...

One thing I have to say is the course was a challenge with varied angles of quartering prey that were over 30 yards away making a good shot very hard and the obstructions and shots through trees were fun... I joked about a moving target and he said he has enough arrow tips in the back stop area as it is... Now I understand why no one shoots the moving target at suffolk archers but it's soooo much fun!!!
-
LOL funny Phyillygunns I was shorted 8 pts. No big deal all in good fun. I think my last 3d shoot I scored 247 so at least I beat my last score even though they are dif courses... I am usualy happy if I don't loose any arrows. I like that old bow very cool. I wonder if we can have a tourney at suffolk archers they are open to the public... Thanks John for a great day of fun food and new friends!!!
-
That was fun!!! Had a great time meeting everyone and shot ok... Did not loose any arrows which is always a plus! Great time with good people, what more can you ask for... Thankfully my back held up for all 5 Stations but a 2nd round was impossible... My Score Red Station: 5 5 10 10 5 8 White : 10 8 8 8 12 8 Blue : 5 8 12 8 10 8 Green :10 10 8 10 10 10 Yellow : 8 5 5 10 8 8 For a total of 250. Most targest where from about 20 + yards to almost 40 which was nice... Epecially since I only have 10-30 and 40 yard pins, I might add one... We Started on blue and yellow was the tree stand and I think we shot at dif. targets than some for the tree stand and used a yellow as our last shot due to obstruction. All in all a great day of fun shooting arrows... I shot with Jeff and John and boy did they shoot good at the end wow!!! I shot OK the 1st 2 rounds and then my form broke down a bit as my back tightened up... Great time shooting with great bunch of guys, lets do it again!!!

Time to shop, I Got my Pistol Permit
NFA-ADK replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in General Chit Chat
Congrats, I am thinking about getting my permit due to back issues. Much easyer to carry a handgun miles in the woods than a rifle... -
Sportswoman Rule!!! Now I just need to find one!

This is a shame for sure, poor family, and mom should have seeked help. Hard to judge with out all the information but apparently the handgun was irrelevant. Added to the story for sensationalism but brings up a good point. The criminals are not allowed yet the insane are. Even if they were stoped from owning a pistol permit this would have happened, apparently. So sad, bless his soul and may they rest in peace...
-
That is disappointing but part of the game, don't let it get you down... Too many factors besides your shot to blame yourself... Could have been a car or another shot from another hunter, age or rut effects...
-
God Bless him and may he rest in peace. He will be by your side this and every season. Deepest Sypathy Ants.

I have to agree with most here. They have stated that all jews should be wiped off the map. Would we allow a nieghbor to state on facebook (or public)that he wanted and will kill his nieghbor when he gets his gun, NO. We would definatly take care of him but to allow him to even apply for a permit would be illogical... He is not stable, just as another country or representitive of a country that wants to wipe out a entire race is not logical... Plain and simple you don't allow known psychotic people or countries to own fire power... Growing up in the 70s-80s we lived under nuclear threat from the Soviet Union thankfully we have both kept composure under extream stress... That is not possible with people who are unstable... If they get a nuke it will be bad, hopefully Israel does not attack them 1st yet they are under attack from them indirectly as we speak... Religion of peace yea right they kill each other if not the same sec of religion... I only pray we can get through this year in one piece... Yet I wonder how many muslims will do this... Otherwise I think Ted is off his rocker yet his points are solid... He is a example of someone who needs some drugs lol... He is not crazy just out there... If he was a kid today he would be under heavy meds... I see my Godchild and say ha how ya doing. "Im fine" he says really slow and I am like HMMMM wt heck is this kid on. RIDDLIN omg...Parents excuse, he is wild. GRRR im like wt heck he is 6 GRRR(Ready to Choke parent for stupidity)... OK thats how parents deal with kids today... Sorry im babbling... Ted is OK in my book...

These are truly great! Photographer Michel Denis-Huot, who captured these amazing pictures on safari in Kenya's Masai Mara in October last year, said he was astounded by what he saw: "These three brothers (cheetahs) have been living together since they left their mother at about 18 months old, he said. 'On the morning we saw them, they seemed not to be hungry, walking quickly but stopping sometimes to play together. At one point, they met a group of impala who ran away. But one youngster was not quick enough and the brothers caught it easily'." These extraordinary scenes followed. Pretty cool e-mail about 3 male cats and gangs in Alberta... Impala survived to live another day... 2nd set of pics shows the gangs in Alberta... last pic has title "Did you loose a cat?" Votes for pic of year 2011... Pretty cool stuff!!!

It's a anti hunting article plain and simple but they did nothing wrong from what I can see. Just another Anti-hunting group spewing junk... Remember when you post your video or pics, ask yourself or better yet some one who does not hunt, IS this offensive? Less ammo for the anti's the better!!! -
THey are great over at C & B. Just make sure you are level, after they set me up I was dead on at 10 yards and about a inch high at 20 and back on at 30 w/10 pin... Did not realize untile I shot at 30 yards that the rest was off as I only shot 20 yards at C & B... C & B is only a 20 yard range... They rechecked and reset up the string with the D-loop (new release)and after a few adjustments at the range I was back on target... They returned my extra large release for winter hunting and exchanged it for more arrows wich was greatly appreciated... Nothing but good things to say about them, they ROCK!!! PS: make sure like Danny said that you are not underspined and that you have your knock point centered properly, otherwise I would second guese porpoising at 11 yards... Or at least being able to see that unless it is a slower arrow speed... 20 I can see it but 11 yards is hard to see that... Im getting old... After they set you up you will be hitting X's again... Otherwise they will figure out why...

Wow awsome! Thanks for sharing!!!
