My point would be this: Take what you can use and donate within reason and what the area can handle. Shooting more for any reason is just wastfull and reflects badly on that hunter. IMO

http://outdoornews.com/arkansas/article_a22882a2-0ba9-11e1-990a-001cc4c002e0.html http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/11/05/dead-deer-mysteriously-dumped-along-n-j-road/ http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/10/12_deer_carcasses_dumped_at_co.html Deer dumping never happens right? If you want more do you own searches... pleanty out thier and these are only the one's that are found, what about the one's you do not hear about in the back of these farms... But you are right let the DEC give the farms a 50 deer permit who cares, apparently not the hunters... And yes dmp are needed I am not saying they are not but I question the DEC motives for some of these permits. At least the insurance companies like it...

And you take what you can eat, that is all I think we should take. If you can eat 10 by all means go get them. I have no problem with shooting many deer if you use them. BUT, Not " I have 15 exta tags I NEED TO FILL OUT because I have them?" Granted some area's it is justified but for one person to shoot more than they will use just does not make sense to me. And just because I hunt an area will low population does not mean it is the only place I hunt. Funny how you all see me as the guy who only hunts the ADK and never sees any deer from another area. Catskill, Prattsville, Roscoe, Long Eddy, Port Jervis, Greene, Cooperstown and Brewster are some of the places Not in the ADK that I hunt... So please stop thinking that I am only having a ADK perspective on hunting, I have hunted all over NY and seen many deer,
-
Just because a area is capable of holding many deer does not justify one guy shooting more than 10 deer I don't care who or where you are... What the hell is he going to do with them all? DO you really think I will believe that one person is going to eat all that meat? If you have a family of over 10 kids mabe??? I doubt any of these hunters can say they will eat more than 6 deer. And just so you know I hunt in Roscoe and in Prattsville beside the ADK and thier are many deer in the area but I bet if I shot 50 myself every year they would decline... And I don't care if you shoot over a hundred deer a year, that does not mean anything to me and does not prove you are a good hunter. And I do not care if you get 2000 tags that does not justify killing a excessive amound of deer for personal pleasure or notariety because it is not for food at that point... Again I think more people here care about how many deer they are capable of shooting rather than the deer heard's well being. But you are not im my area so yea go ahead and whack 50 deer a year on those farms and fill all those DMP and ditches on the side of the road with them, I wonder where all those deer came from??? DO you stop hunting when you fill your freezer or fill our your tags. Why shoot more that you will use? OK if you donate to the venison donation fine, otherwise I bet a lot of meat goes to wast and that is my biggest complaint...
-
OMG how many deer can one person eat in a year? Funny how some complain and want a restriction on the amount of deer you can take per year. And yet here on this post it almost sounds like a few guys are shooting a bunch... Ahhhhhh yea I will give you 10 dollars not bucks to stay out of the ADK... And then they wonder why the hunting camps in the area they hunt complain there are not as many deer in the area... "Yep me and my buddies shot over 25 deer last year I wonder why we only saw one deer this season?" Give me a brake... Sounds like the brown down crew to me or the guys that have to say "yea I shoot over a hundred deer in my life". Sorry but this type of hunting pisses me off. DMP should be banned in my oppinion, if the farmer or area need deer killed they should invite hunters who will appreciate and eat all the food that is killed. And you people wonder why we see a ditch filled with 30 or more deer in it, you think the farmer or hunter is going to pay for all that butchering??? Again sorry for the tone but this has been going on for way to long, yet this is the way the DEC manages the deer herd? Sorry but you will get no help from me getting more tags sounds like you have done enough damage.
-
Welcome aboard!!! I hunt the catskills when invited. Roscoe and Prattsville. We have a member map on the top of the page that shows where people are located if they wanted to list themself. And yes the DEC has the authority to go onto private property.

I keep debating weather or not I want to try them out. They keep getting better... It is still a very new technology being implemented and I still see a lot of bugs. Sounds like the Bushnell Trophy is pretty good. If I had a better idea where the deer trails were I might actually try them but sometimes just finding a deer trail is an endeavour. I usually find the well worn trails are used by a group of doe, yet I do not find them too often in the area I hunt. With such a vast area of woods I would have problems determining where to put one or two on public land and would fear the theft of the device after hearing about all the poeple who steal them...

It use to be any knife with a blade larger than 4 inches was to be in plain view. In other words it has to be on your belt so it can be seen from 3 sides. Otherwise yea it's up to the cop, if you are doing something stupid you will have a weapons posession added onto what ever other charge you get... I had a butterfly knife taken away and the guy with the big bowie was able to keep his... Not sure what the laws are today but check you local police and any town you will be in if you plan on haveing a large knife exposed. Basic law do not carry one in public and only carry one exposed if you are hunting or fishing or if it is over 4 inches... No switch blades, "gravity knives" Butterfly, or projectile knifes are accepted in NY regaurdless of the fact that it says you can use butterfly and switchblades for hunting/fishing most cops will confiscate them due to insufficiant knowledge of the laws...

They sure know human activity in thier "home". Funny how they can see the human pattern change and it reflect on thier habits. The ghost reveiled.

Good luck guys and be safe! Hope to see some pics.

LOL 2 funny... Guilty, spell check never worked for me here...

Interesting post. In the ADK I would shoot anything that size but the last thing I would look at are his ears. Even if I saw something in his ear I would assume it was a leave or branch stuck in his antlers. When I hunt the main thing I look for is a main beam of at least 14 inches with at least 3 points on top of body size... The closest town is about 7 miles away(as the crow flies) and I doubt a farm buck would make it in that deep. (Not impossible) If I saw the tag on cam pics and realized it was a farm buck, I doubt I would shoot it... It would just not feel right to me if I knew it was a farm buck, just like many I am sure my hunting partner's would see it as fair game which in my oppinion it would be, just not for me. I think this post is about ethics, at least for me the fair chase would not be so fair with this animal. Not as bad as hunting a cemetary in jeans with a known hand feed deer but for me I could not shoot a known farm raised animal. Same reason I do not go wild boar hunting in Penn, they were on a farm in a fenced area. Just does not feel like hunting. Same reason I do not shoot what I call "stupid deer", if it comes right up to me, it is not much of a hunt and takes the thrill out of what I am in the woods for...

Yea well lets just limit all vehecles to 80 mph, why should they be allowed to go faster??? After all it is illegal to go that fast right? We should outlaw all VEHECLES they kill so many every year I bet many more than guns... I wonder what the vehecle to person kill is vs gun kill. Hell forget the facts let just outlaw all vehecles so everyone is safe!!! I agree this is just a justification of some politicain to say yea I am tough on gun control, VOTE FOR ME... Limiting guns will affect nothing just like the import ban did. Yes I still have a H & K 91 w/20 round mag clips, and yes they are great for target shooting, usually that is what we use them for. And yes I have hunted with this gun you just have to get a 5 round clip... This sounds like another politican trying to get votes... Or figure out how to propose some stupid law that gets him brownie points... Again outlawing or resticting those guns will do nothing, the outlaw does not go to the local gun store for fire arms... He gets them off the street which can come from anywhere. This post sounds politicaly motivated and makes me wonder what the real point of this post is. Sorry for tone...

Hunt Moose River Plains, does not matter what you use, It's a challenge. Since 1991 I think my camp of about 2-8 guys(depending on year) have seen about 30-40 deer and only 6 of them were bucks... Not the greatest stats but thats forever wild... Try still hunting in the early season with any bow, I found it very hard with all the ground cover catching onto everything...

Why Did we Creat HuntingNY.com?
NFA-ADK replied to burmjohn's topic in Hunting New York Annoucements and News
Great one dave!!! That is why I love this site. I love the laughs!!! Honestly this is my favorite site, the funny conversations and people getting out of control over opinions is part of what makes this site so nice. The fact that we can have all sorts of hunters on here from traditional bow, compound, crossbow, black powder and rifle hunters, to still hunters who stalk deer in vast woods to guys with less than 10 achers who get deer every year to small game and every other type of hunting we have a large diverse group of people! And yes we all have opinions but that is what makes this site so interesting to me I like to hear what other think and try to have a open mind. Opions may stink to some but again I believe that is why this site is so much fun, you can express yourself and have a strong opinion that the editors and owners of the site might not like but they will not kick you off for a dif opinion and allow you to express and argue your point be it good bad or just plain wierd... -
You all make very good points. Esp. Joe. My perception is due to a few old timers that claim after Moose River was opened and many bucks and doe were taken in a short period the area never recovered. The guy I meet this year states he no longer hunts Moose River due to low population and said the same thing as the others... After hunting moose river for over 20 years I have come to the conclusion that 1 deer per square mile is a very good estimate for this area. Yes the ADK does have many deer in it but it varies greatly. I have noticed the town's usually have very good populations while other area's vary due to habitat usually. I would just like a better population of deer in Moose River. With the exception of this year I am usually the only person to see deer. Now I know you think I am saying this because of that but I am not. I think it would be nice if more than one person could see more than one deer in 6 guys for a week, thats all. Even if they did help that does not by any means make more deer for us to see or hunt but it would hopfully help deer in there winter yard in the hardest times. The old timer stated "The solitude up here sucks!" He was refering to the fact that some area's seem void of ANY wildlife. He refered forever wild to forever dead lol. But you are all right, GOD forbid we let NYS log and find out it help animals and deer, they would probably wipe out the forest... And yes the age structure in the ADK is great! Better off leaving well enough alone, lol so much for venting. :-) And yes I agree, one day when it's been dry for a long time and we get that bad lightning storm it will go up in flames.

I love Hunting the ADK but do not activly hunt doe as the population is so low. In so far as being satisfied I did not say anything about disliking or being dissatisfied. Not sure why you would bring up satisfaction when I am complaining about closing area's and DEC not doing anything for deer management. If you think the population was always low go and talk to a old timer who was around when they opened it up. Thier were deer everywhere from what I have been told 1st hand by multiple people... And that was due to logging, plain and simple again from what I am told. In so far as doe's, Yes they are as easy as fawns and yearlings in my opinion BUT not all doe are created equal... Most of my doe interaction has been in the southern zone, and I could have hit them with a bat, mabe that is why I do not hunt them... I hope you understand why I don't hunt them now. With a population of less than 1 deer per square mile you think I would actually hunt doe? And you can only shoot them during bow season. And yes not all doe OR bucks are created equal. Most of the area I hunt I am not allow to shot doe or I would not due to low population. Are all doe's easy to hunt, NO. I never said that so stop putting words in my mouth. What I said was "Hunting for me is a challenge and to shoot a doe or a yearling is just not that challenging for ME." Does that mean all doe's are easy to hunt, NO. I tried one time to hunt this mature doe and never was able to get a shot on her as she busted me every time I tried... This does not mean I will not hunt doe, or shoot a small buck. But in the ADK during rifle IT IS ILLEGAL TO SHOOT DOE, and when I go during bow season I am activly seeking sign of bucks or large doe population for rifle season hunting. Are deer hard to hunt yes, but when you have them come so close I could tackle them it does not represent a true hunt for me... I was not able to hunt any southern zone area's this year due to multiple issues which is were I usually see the most deer. (That is why I am fustrated, my hunting time was cut in half this year!!!) Not seeing any deer in the ADK is not out of the ordinary. The main reason I did not see as many deer is I was trying to push deer to my partner who is the only one to see 2 doe the entire week and the weather did not help... In so far as helping the population, let them go in with a chainsaw during the worst winters and help the deer by cutting some tree's down, or clear cut or better yet let the logging company come in an help. And yes I agree with you hunting anything can be a challenge but when they come to within 5 feet of me the challenge is gone...

With all the places and people in NY and a deer population that fluctuates between towns and counties from hunting, road kill, nature and food source, we are bound to have differant opinions. Between long bow, compound bow, crossbow, rifle and black powder hunters we will always have opinions that will vary. Add into the mix ethics, tree stand hunters, still hunters, private and state land, AR restrictions and shortening of our seasons will cause tempers to fly even before a discussion is posted. I have to be honest, I LOVE THIS SITE and enjoy the conversations with all my fellow hunters. We are a Brotherhood and need to stick together despite our own views. I like to still hunt on vast state land but will never put anyone down who hunts from a tree stand on 10 acres. We have heated topics but that is because we are so passionate about what we do... That fact causes us to get out of control sometimes. We are a diverse group of hunters who love of the outdoors and have a passion for it and that should unite us, but because we are sooo passionate about what we do, we sometimes have heated discussions. That should not stop us from being brothers!!! To all my fellow hunters may your freezer be as full as your heart, may your sights be full of deer and may you shoot true as your ethics allow. Your Brother in Arms. NFA GETSOME

Another reason I don't hunt LI. I though I had allready purchased a licence for hunting and to be isolated to one area of hunting due to designated area is pathetic.

5 H One week solo(bow) and 6 guys for 1 week rifle. 2 doe seen by one guy. Forever wild sucks for deer population... Would be nice if the DEC actually tried to help the deer out in these area's. But they are only to conserve not protect and nurture. Such a shame this resource is wasted when it is so vast... But lets close off another thousand acres to people who can not access it. THis way the only people who can access it is hikers like me. Tree huggers suck!!! Sorry needed to vent a little, lol...

Public land is hard to hunt with all the hid outs on private property for the deer. Land owners with plots and farms close by make it hard to even have deer in some of the state area's. On top of that you have to deal with the public... Be it a hiker, camper, biker, jogger, or hunter. This makes public land difficult at times. Having to deal with hunters with no courtesy sucks. But just as some people have no respect on the internet, it is the same out in the real world. kpshaw I feel your pain. After dealing with bear/coyote hunters during bow season shooting the hell out of the woods, about 4 other camp sites setting up next to us during rifle, (we are in a area with a abundance of open sites) and allmost getting shot last year due to a idiot taking taget practice next to our camp site, I know where you are coming from... I hope they don't close the area on you that would be a shame. Otherwise I would have to agree with Doc and Cabinboy go deeper or find another spot less crowded if possible. Don't loose hope, and don't let a few jerks ruin hunting for you, it's too fun!!!
