In the 2011 hunting seasons, 26 personal injury hunting-related shooting incidents were reported, including four fatalities. All of the fatalities occurred during the regular deer season, one of which was self-inflicted. Again are they missing something? This guy died during late season muzzloader, yet the dec says "In the 2011 hunting seasons, 26 personal injury hunting-related shooting incidents were reported, including four fatalities. All of the fatalities occurred during the regular deer season, one of which was self-inflicted." Are they missing this guy, 49 year old Paul Hatch of Russell. http://www.myabc50.com/news/local/story/Manslaugther-charge-in-fatal-hunting-accident/rSODjG_1-Uu9_iuUtn9cOQ.cspx

Is thier a link because this does not sound right if that guy was shot during late season how come he is not part of the statistic? The post states no one was killed except during reg rifle, yet this guy was killed during late season... Am I missing something, and no I am not trying to be sarcastic just trying to find the facts. It says this was the safest season and no person was killed except during rifle season, yet that post with my link shows this guy was killed during late season, again I am just trying to find out the facts...

Did you forget about your own post? Or are the fact wrong cause this guy was killed during late season acourding to the web site... And your post. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/7729-fatal-shooting-in-st-lawrence-county-last-evening/ http://www.myabc50.com/news/local/story/Manslaugther-charge-in-fatal-hunting-accident/rSODjG_1-Uu9_iuUtn9cOQ.cspx

Yes I would believe that Early. Long lake area is know for bears.

Ok my 2 cents. Sorry for starting this BO argument but I apparently caused it. Statistics are not facts. Statistics say it is safer if you wear BO. So we say it is a fact BO saves lives. Except for this poor guy who got shot wearing BO. So how did BO help him, it did not. FACT disproved or he would be ALIVE. We like to say "Statisticaly BO is a proven safety factor" would be a much better arguement... Common sense, identify your target, placing your shots and hunting legally would have saved him. If the IDIOT behind the gun followed any of these precations he would not be in jail today and this guy would be alive... Your point on BO safety are valid and I am not saying BO does not work, yet it is not a fact it will save you from some moron with no common sense. Stupidity, neglect, drugs, improper handleing of a fire arm and lack of common sense I would argue cause more fatalities than not wearing BO. This last year is a good example of lack of common sense and how more people get hurt and killed due to it. 2011 safety report coming soon, does not look good... Do I use BO, Yes. Public property, a large volumn of hunters, inexperienced hunters and drives are all valid uses for BO and I do wear it then. But up in the Norther zone I don't unless doing a drive. I always though, due to the fact that hunters must identify the deer(rifle) as a buck made it safer, BO would not be required. This past season had me 2nd guesing that. Many a round flew by me during bow season in the ADK. Thanks for having early bear season during bow DEC ontop of the yote hunters. So much for useing a bow when the woods are "quiet"... More round fired around me using bow than during all my rifle seasons... Guese BO should be required during bow now... Why not require all hunter all seasons and any hikers or people during those seasons to wear BO while in any hunting area, great another gov. law protecting us... But we would be safer... Just like seatbelt laws make it required so everyone is safer... Yes I am taking it to the max to prove a point don't take this litteraly... The few times I have had rounds fly by me BO would not have prevented it as I was visually our of range. And usually it was due to lack of common sense. Do not go target shooting on public land. Do not shoot at any game you can not see and identify. Stop shooting when you can not see your prey. Place your shot. Always treat guns with respect. Always remember once you pull that trigger the bullet can never be taken back! Best hunting trip is when all return home SAFE, everything else is just details... God bless this poor guy and his family who lost his life enjoying the outdoors due to the neglect of another.

Welcome aboard!!!

Upsetting, give them hell!!! Max penalty for sure no mercy Bubba!!! Should be mandatory jail time, even for just one night...
-
Stop just let the criminals have guns... If he was denied his pistol permit, he would just be another in the obituary. I am willing to bet my life savings (2$) on the fact that the crimals were not pistol permit cariers... Thanks for sharing Dave, we should all have the right to protect ourselfs at any time any place. But that was taken away a long time ago.

Did it one time camping on the Kunjamuk river, last time I did that, funny the video shows gas at 1$ something... Best 3 dollars I ever spent was on a head net that week...

Opinions will always vary but that does not mean you have to demoralize, put down or otherwise subject someone to harassment. This is a great site, one of my favorites but when dealing with joe public just like in public hunting, you will always get some who have no courtesy, repect or any care for anyone. I would make it policy that stuff will not be tolerated if I was admin, no need for it... Make your point in a intelligent form and respond how you would want to be responded to. Opinions vary and are usually based on experiance and no two people will have the exact same experiences... Just because you do not agree with someone does not give you the right to subject them to ridicule. Read your post before you hit POST out loud and ask yourself, would I be upset if someone sent this to me??? This is suppose to be a place that unites us yet I see many who live off the anguish and demoralization of others. Plain and simple if you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything if you can not be civil about it. Can you say FAMILY site? Although dominated by adult males, I believe this is a family site...

Good luck Red I hope you get it!!! Sounds like a nice place and considering it was your 1st area for deer hunting I understand the sentimental value.

Is it too late?

OK speaking of e-mail this was sent today... Think you will like it... "US budget explained in simple english. I love it when complex things are simplified so that we can all understand. US Tax revenue: 2,170,000,000,000 Fed Budget: 3,820,000,000,000 New debt: 1,650,000,000,000 National debt: 14,271,000,000,000 Recent budget cut: 38,500,000,000 Now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget. Annual family income: 21,700 Money the family spent: 38,200 New debt on credit cards: 16,500 Outstanding balance on credit: 142,710 Total Budget cuts which some politicians are proud about: $385 Stop the insanity now. Vote them out and demand a balanced budget." That was the e-mail retyped... We really need to do something soon or our your children will have no future... -
God bless this poor hunter and his family. Wast of a life due to human neglect. They should put into the safety course that people no longer get away with this crap... This guy is going away for a long time due to his own neglect and stupidity. I don't wear orange except in the catskills and other orange army area's. If I am doing a drive I wear it, but I don't do many drives. I just feel most times it is better to be hidden than seen... I know most will disagree but I feel the orange gets too much attention from the critters and other hunters looking for something to aim at... I always though hunting with bow during early season was safe in full camo, yet the DEC opened up early bear and yote season was open, boy was I in for a shock... I felt like I was at the L.I. rifle range DOWN range a week before opening day! I was out of the woods QUICK as I felt severly overpowered with my mathews MQ1 vs shootguns and 223's... Again god bless this poor inocent guy that got killed enjoying the outdoors. They no longer just let this go, now if you shoot someone while hunting YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED. This was no accident he aimed at an area he was not sure of and fired off a round thinking it was probably a deer. Like many stated before place your shot is vital and neccesary for a ethical kill. Unfoutunatly this is an example of how ethics would have saved this guy. Ethical hunters identify thier prey and place their shots, during legal hours... He should rot in jail IMO. May be they should intoduce manslaughter into the hunter safety course. At least it might scare people into thinking before pulling that trigger... O My that dog is soooo CUTE!!! It took me a few min but I think she is a Meshee or Mesha I usually ask the dog and see which one she responds to best and then that is her name. Good luck with her she looks like a real beauty and a keeper what ever you name her!!!

Nice I can see why he won. Nice aero dynamics love the theme. Very cool, CONGRATS!!!

The beauty about the 30-06 round is that it is so versitile. Having so many grains availible from 55 grain w/pusher to 220 grain gives nice options if you reload or want to use one gun for multiple aplications... I would think it would be a little too heavy for small game though, yotes no prob again if you dont care about the pelts...
-
The 30-06 will really reach out and touch them with the proper load and grain. Not that the 223 wont but I think the 06 will hit them much harder at longer distances if that is what you are looking for. I like the 165 grain for big game. I would prefer the 223 if I was hunting yotes, but if you don't care about the pelt any round will work. 223 is much less expensive to shoot.

Welcome all. If you love hunting, you will love this site...

Good one!!!

My buddy was out last Monday the 16th in Ridge. He missed a small doe and the buck that followed. His 1st encounter with deer while hunting... He enjoyed it very much... Other than that he did not see any deer.

This is the link to the NYS DEC web site public access. I would figure you would want region #3. Possible 4 depending where in the Valley you are... Great information on the site... http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/34531.html Make sure you check all the regulation for the area you will hunt as not all area's allow rifles. Best of luck and welcome to the hunting community!!! PS: If you are new to Hunting I highly recommend reading some books and tagging up with an experianced hunter your 1st couple of times out. Avid hunters make the introduction easy with thier vast knowledge of what is need in so far as equipment, clothes, preperation and overall wisdom of the woods that they might pass on. You just might get a life long friend in the process...
