Very cool! I watched a show and the guy shot his smoke pole and had to wait for 5 min before he could see anything in the fog 2 funny. He asked the camera guy like 5 times, DId I hit it? Great gun good luck with it. Let see some pics when you get back, we hope!!! Good luck this weekend and be safe. -
D.E.C. finally nailed my neighbors baiting
NFA-ADK replied to hb270deermanager's topic in Deer Hunting
I can install a camera system if you are interested. As long as you have electric and cable you can monitor it anywhere. I can help with instructions if you want to do it yourself 2... We should have more people like you who actually report these poachers. And that is what they are, plain and simple. Sucks when you have nieghbors like that, hopefully the Judge takes away thier hunting licence for life. Mabe that would stop these idiots or at least make people think twice... Gives us real hunters a bad name. -
What a amazing deer and it is remarkable to me how he was able to get such a stud at 3 years old. Such a shame all that time and energy wasted because of one stupid kid. Sounds like it took over 15 years to get to this point, I hope he still has a chance at recovering from this!

Funny cause I have been on the site and uploaded a pic from a web site and did a few other post and did not get anything. Probably poped up because something was allready infected. You didn't get it from this site from what I can see. Update your windows, adobe, java, macromedia flash player. Then go to download.com and install MalwareBytes and do a full scan. MS security essentials is OK and so is Spybot Search and destroy, but the spybot should be installed by someone familiar with the program. Other software that is good is AVG, and superantispyware. All free at least for the trail and work very well for getting rid of malware, spyware, viruses, trojans etc. Computer repair Technician for over 10 years... This does not mean the site does not have a exploit being used but if you stay up to date with updates you should have less problems because you will have been "patched" with updates to prevent this junk... Again I believe this site as of now is OK... But I am updated...

Any place in the SZ I like to have at lease a hat on during any type of firearms season. Although I have hunted the Northern part of the SZ without and allso on private property in Roscoe I do not recommend it. If you are in a bow only no. IF thier are guns in the area at all wear it... Simply put it will be safer... I never wear orange in the ADK regaurdless of season but MOST hunters up North identify thier prey, one reason I like that area better in so far as safety... But even up thier idiots can be found. I have noticed more of my hunting party using it but they are all maried now which changed thier outlook on safety... Just make sure if you shoot any deer, put it on before you get to the deer and while dragging out. Another thing I need to remember if I ever get another Buck...

Dam I mean I will jump through hoops and over fire for a nice buck but it would all be legal. To go and do that is just plain stupid. WOW lol 2 funny but I feel bad for the farmer/owner of the deer that was his prize possesion and I am sure made him mad money... Come on Will I shot a Polar bear thier is a whole heard on the other side of the hill. Lets get them!

Trapper nailed 2 in the ADK with over 12 beaver. (used beaver as bait) Beaver was pretty cool but I would not trap or shoot big cats they are just too cool and I never see them so I figure they have a small population and do not affect the deer that much. The only 2 he has ever gotten in over 20 years of trapping... He was trying to get the yotes... From what he told me the yotes are very skitish around human scent... One adult femal very old teeth broken and worn down and what appeared to be her daughter. I thanked him for trapping the beaver because I feel if he did not trap the area I hunt would be one big swamp!!! I already have one area I can not get to because of beaver ponds. He says they reproduce like rats and will catch another 12 next year...

I think it does affect deer sometimes, one way or another. The imature deer seem to not mind as much and yes I believe some will actually come in to investigate the smell. A mature deer that has smelled and associated this smell with people is another story, and those are the one's you don't see... Not realy sure it would affect someone's chances at taking a deer, but in my opinion it will not help... Both my ADK deer where taken after finishing a smoke or within 10 min... Again I do not think it helps, best bet up in stand is to bring a small container and place them in it when done to cut down on the smell... If you chew do the same thing. Any foriegn smell can cause a deer to shy away from a area, it's thier best defense, but deer are curious by nature and sometimes come in just to investigate... For me smoking is not a help, whenever I get onto a nice track and feel I have a great chance at a nice buck the patch goes on and I stop smoking in that area... I missed 2 nice deer doing this but that's another story... When I finally stop smoking I feel my chances will only impove... I have to quit...

Wow 2 beautiful deer, thanks for sharing Dave that is an AMAZING deer!!! Mabe it is a management tag that the farmers get, not sure what they look like. If it is I could understand the guy not wanting his name up, because people would say it is not a legit deer hunt. Not saying as fact just what might be... Anyone know what kind of tag that is?

I have a friend who stopped doing this because of all the idiots who expect him to find a slighly wounded deer... After going on many unsuccessful tracks due to variables unseen he gave it up. I contemplated doing this but after hearing his horror stories of idiots wounding deer I gave up that notion. Most guys ask allot of questions before they will come and look for a deer making a decision on weather or not to persue. Learn to track and practice shooting more and this service is not needed but it is nice to have...

LOL dave thanks for the laughs I needed that, Last 2 post were great!!! Orion I understand both of your post and don't believe that AR state wide is a valid choice. But in area's that have it the hunters are getting good results and many seem to be pleased. I believe that is due to high population like you said before that is needed and due to great food access, low predation and low winter kills. That I believe is why it is working in the area's right now. Most of the AR area's have great habitat for deer in my opinion. That being said, not all of NY is even close to this type of area. Between the lake effect weather the TugHill, Adirondack, and Catskill Moutian ranges, finger lake area, hudson valley, schoharie, Mohawk,Black, st.laurence and champlain river basin's we have a large diversity of lands. Farms, state land, private lots, city limits, restricted parks managed and unmanaged lands equal a very diverse landscape across our state. Weather paterns and food avaliblity vary from county city and even towns causing a more comlex variable. Again the main reason for my pro stance is I believe it would improve the heard. That improvement would equate to a better class of deer, in my opinion. Granted that might not equate to hunters getting a better class of deer but that could be what happens when bucks get old, they get smarter. This does not mean hunters will not have a chance at a buck, it should mean they would have a better chance at more bucks in better overall health, in my opinion. That is the way I see AR. I understand you can not generalize our state or even regions with this, it really needs to be a county overall aproval by majority hunter vote that would make it fair to all. I would make majority over 75% and make avalible management permits for people who still wanted to hunt spikes, to allow them additional options, Esp if food was a primary reason for hunting but would be managed in some form to allow the AR restrictions to take effect and over time reduced to none. This would appease the extra 25% I would hope. I agree this restriction is not good for hunting but it should equate to a older smarter animal and improved overall heard, in my opinion... Resulting in a larger range of deer to choose from. I realize some will call me a elitist or that I don't care about the future of our sport because I am for AR in certian area's and that is OK. It's just a fourum and my words I hope do not hurt anyone or cause them to stop hunting. And despite anything I post here the DEC will not be swayed one way or another...

2 kids shot on school grounds by hunters!!
NFA-ADK replied to teamcowboyup's topic in General Chit Chat
http://www.brownsvil...respassing.html This is the update... Not hunters at this point it looks like they think the target shooters did it. We will have to wait for ballistics... One week from what the report said. Would be nice if they would give an update on the kids condition. More concerned about proving who did it for news than print the kids physical condition. So typical of a news site... What ever makes headlines... What the kids condition is not worth reading in thier minds or is just not news worthy? And Team Cowboy that is not what the headline read. "Two kids shot on school grounds by hunters". Did you make that up yourself? It said Hunters in Custody after 2 bullets hit students. Big dif even though it could be true. Your title implies guilt is all im saying... Not sure if that was the original story title posted, would not surprise me as the media loves drama... Lets wait till balistics return before making judgement. Most importian is I hope the kids are OK, everything else we can take care of... -
She is still young, but ask her this: Does she want the "Ballerina Barbie. In her pretty pink tutu. My Birthday. I was 10, and do you know what they got me? *Malibu* Barbie, they had to go! " Quote from adams family, sorry could not resist, lol... My point is this: If asked at any new hunter safety course: If a spike and a 8 point were in front of you what one would you want to shoot? The anser is the 8 pt most of the time. Anyone who says they don't want or would not shoot a monster 8pt is lying to appease someone or is not a true hunter in my opinion. And granted any deer for a new hunter is a trophy... After she has grown up and old enough to drive, she would choose the corvette over just about any other junk type of car... Including a pinto... And the point of that was this: As a new hunter I would think he or she would like to get a trophy or at least have a chance at one and that is the bennifit of good AR and land management. The fact that thier ARE large deer in the area make that possibility... In so far as AR causing hunters to loose interest, SO BE IT. They would have stopped anyway... They were looking for an excuse to leave this just hastened it. I just don't see hunters leaving the sport cause of AR. They might leave the area but they will not stop hunting... Again if the do because of AR they would have anyway in my opinion... As far as I am concerned AR has nothing to do with hunter retention it has to do with heard maturity plain and simple, at least for me. Now don't reply to this I have another 80 something pages on AR I am trying to read, LOL... Again this is just my opinion... I could care less if it does happens or not cause I use my own AR restrictions and again the hunters that leave or stop would have anyway they were never really into hunting to begin with, just did it cause friends did and was the thing to do at the time...

I did not say anything about AR causing better recruitment but since we are on that part of the subject. I understand what you are saying about more restrictions but I dont believe that will stop any new hunter from trying but it might deter them and old hunters. Priorities: The fact that young hunters can not shoot a deer teaches restraint and knowledge of your prey wich inturn enhances your experience and teaches essential lessons for taking a more mature deer. True hunters never stop, even when discouraged... Don't you think young guys (or gal's)would be more interested in taking a huge stud buck like the one's you have taken and shown them pictures of? (In the new AR zone) Or would they rather shoot a doe or spike like some get every year now? You want the pinto or the corvette? You know his/her answer... Hunting a mature deer which they would now have a better chance at I believe would be more enticing than just any deer. And seeing a great buck is usually enough to keep a new hunter interested or old for that matter... I feel having a more mature heard would benifit all not just me. As a matter of fact I would be the last person to "Benifit" because I hunt mainly up North and yes I love when I have the woods to myself but even up north it's rarely true and AR would not affect my area at all... In so far as AR helping get new hunters, I don't think it was designed for that... In my opinion it's for the herd not the people. Simply put a more mature herd will survive better in any conditions. So for me AR has nothing to do with recruitment or loosing hunters its about a better deer herd in general wich allso equates to better hunting in my opinion due to larger, smarter and a more healthy prey. But again I love hunting mature deer... It will not help with recruitment or the old timers and yes I do care about people leaving the "sport" but the way I figure it they would have gone anyway, AR just cause them to do it quicker... Too bad they can not see the benifits of an older balanced herd. The DEC does and many hunters in AR zones are happy with the results... And you are right it all adds up to $$$ for them...

Skillet I don't care if someone who is already a hunter decieded he was done hunting. It is all personal preferance. Will a few hunters that stop hunting because of AR affect the state, I doubt it. I am more concerned about new hunters than existing hunters who might quite. We are a dieing bread and every year we loose more hunters to gaming and other internet related stuff for kids. When I 1st hunted the ADK you HAD to make reservations for opening day, now you can just show up and get a room... Every year the hunting population is getting smaller and the citiots get larger. I will be taking 2 kids hunting this year to help that out but to be concerned about a few people who will quite hunting because of AR, no im not concerned about them, they would have found another excuse to quite anyway...

Nice video.

Dad 6424 That would be hard in the ADK where you are not allowed to shoot doe, except during bow season... Less than 1 deer per square mile, shooting a doe first would cut the population down even further. And yes I agree outlaws will still shoot what ever where ever, laws don't apply to them. Some area's in NYS do not need population control. I know area's in the ADK by town's loaded with deer yet other vast area's are not. Personaly I feel AR restrictions would help mature the herd but I am a mature deer hunter in general and could care less if I was not able to shoot a spike or four pointer. Most mature deer hunters do not need AR as they self impose thier own... I don't believe you can use a mid western state's deer management in NY too many variables. The norther zone and S. zone are like night and day... The reason, I believe, most Mature deer hunters would like AR restrictions is to have more opportunities at a better class of deer, if all those spikes and small bucks are not shot, they will be around untile they are an adult provided the winter or yotes don't get them... If you don't think AR would work ask Mr.Dave Edwards about the AR property he has hunted. O yea and check out his dad's (Sr.)deer this year, proof is in the pudding... Both deer taken on a long time self imposed Quality Deer Management property. But I understand not everyone want's a big deer, they just want A deer. For those I say AR restrictions would suck but I feel it would improve the herd wich is all I care about. I could care less if someone says they will stop hunting if AR restrictions are impossed, they probably were not passionate hunters anyway. If the dec said I could only use a Knife, I would be up next year in the middle of the ADK with a knife trying to figure out how get one... Some like to hunt, others love to hunt and then thier is me... Hunting and fishing is a passion for me, and to stop for any reason is unfathomable. GETSOME

Shot my deer on Tuesday and had it butchered on Friday. Wed and Thursday were warm, in the high 50's 60's, I packed the cavity with ice and was ok Repacked for the ride home, 6-7 bags of ice total. One hunter complained about the tast but he was the only one who though it would spoil. Meat was fine no one got sick and tasted great. I coved the deer during the hotest part of the day... It did not smell at all. I think the ice saved it... I have been told the same about the 45 deg but with the ice and cover I was OK.
-
I agree with Ox108 the deer is not in good health for some reason and the yotes are just doing whats natural. I still don't like them and will take them out as I have seen the results of predation 1st hand... I think yotes take a larger number of fawns than people know...

Good shooting and congrats!!! You def put your time in. Thanks for sharing. Very cool...

OK I understand your point of view as a nieghbor but as a hunter i don't get it. He is hunting illegaly and should find another method. He is the type of person the dec are going after, 1) He has a loaded weapon while driving 2) He is road hunting 3) Picture this: A monster buck comes out, he shoots it from the truck then can't get it out of the woods, when he gets help people question how he got the deer then instead of being a great hunter who took a really nice deer he is a poacher with no respect. It's called ethics plain and simple. Hunting from a vehecle is unethical... The fact that he is disabled has no bearing on the matter, if he lives in the area he hunts and can not find deer he is a bad hunter. If he can not walk in the woods how is he going to get a deer out? Im sorry but I disagree with you, some people need to understand when deer hunting is over. If you are disabled you have alternatives but to poach and thats what he is doing is wrong. Why not offer him a spotlight and the exact spot the doe come out every day nice story to tell the kids. "O yea I nailed that 10 pointer from the chevy at 8:45 pm tough drag that 50 ft to the truck..." But yea tell him where they come out, why not you don't want those deer around anyway. I don't think I would report a nieghbor but road hunting = poaching in my book... Any yea people might say one thing on the internet and do another but I feel the majority of hunters are ethical. For me hunting is about the chase and to chase with vehecle is well lame...
