Hunting 5H I can say they are a force. See tracks all the time and the calling at night and in the am. I was thinking about going up to try to thin them out. They are just as hard as deer to hunt in my opinion. And yes they do a number on fawns, I have seen the results...

It's the same thing as a tree stand as far as I am concerned... Only dif is you can be out of the bad weather and if it is enclosed it will keep scent to a minimum and keep you warm. Only issue I would see is people complaining it's not "real" hunting cause you are not in the "outdoors" you are inside... Many hunters would equate this to hunting from a dwelling. Great idea to get young kids into the outdoors. Don't think I could ever use one but if it was -21 with wind chill I would contemplate it for extra time hunting. Great for the old and disabled... Dam I though I was lazy hiking 3 miles while hunting but that takes the cake. Kinda takes the "fair chase" out of hunting if you ask me. Deer should have a chance at seeing me while hunting but to each his own...

I bet he would go to every dinner he was invited but wants to act like he would not because he is above that. Again I agree wt heck is he complaining about? I see nothing on his post but compliments... This is a forum, opinions will vary, and I agree with many on this site that if you earn the deer it is a trophy plain and simple, size is irrelevant it's the effort and time spent that makes it worth it. And that is why so many complain about the stupid graveyard post, I would never hunt a cemetary plot... And I think many would pass on a monster buck hunt in a cemetary... It's called MORALS and some have none like the poachers the DEC caught... Nice story to tell: yea I went to the cemetary and waited for the monster buck to come to me with my hand our like I had food then wacked it. Im a great hunter right!

While hunting for deer I always keep a eye out for yotes and bear, kinda hard to get the yotes to stop but if I can I will take them... Bear depends how far in and how big the bear is, I don't feel like dragging something larger than a big deer, the deer almost killed me...So I usually do not go for bear. I would not bring dif shotgun rounds, better off to have a small BB gun or pistol for the varmints. I like to keep the two dif types of hunting separate due to regulations and firearms...

Whats on your Christmas / Holiday Wish List???
NFA-ADK replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
I would like a nice buck but I wish that all year round... My wish is for good health... Otherwise my family stoped exchanging gifts after my mom's eye's got bad a few years ago. Makes X-mas a better time for everyone as we don't have to shop and deal with all the crowds. Now we only buy for the kids. I think X-mas should be about something other than gifts but I don't try not to preach on forums so thats the end of my comment. JMP Best of luck to you and your family. -
Wow some real nice deer taken. Congrats to all, some real nice bucks taken by members on this site. Hope my luck changes for this weekend or possible next if my other tech finally gets over her cold... Sucks when your hunting time gets cut down due to work issues!!! And a best friend not inviting me up for bow, that really cut deep... Esp. when he knew I wanted to hunt it, time to find more land to hunt... Good luck to all and be safe!!!

I would let him go, but thats the best part is watching and observing in my opinion. In my hunting party I would say 4 of 6 would shoot... Those 4 would be the least experienced... Study my prey and it's habit's I have found to be the best part of hunting. I had a fawn come up to me during bow season and it spotted me at 15ft it stomped it's little front leg to get me to move at about 10 ft, cutest thing I ever saw... After he passed his mom came through and followed. One of the most memorable times hunting in my life. Not like I would have take the fawn but the doe was a question as it was my 1st year bow hunting, answered real quick with a draw down and continue on... That being said, hunting is what you make of it... Try to be as safe as possible and avoid the crowds if possible and know all the rules and regulations and follow them. Other than that if you like the deer you shot thats all that matters, it's YOUR accompishment be proud you are amoung the few. Most hunter on here who say I would pass have years of experience shooting many deer so shooting a yearling is not needed for meat or to prove a tag is filled. Many people start as deer hunters not as many make it to "Mature Deer Hunter"... Again if you enjoyed it and it was legal thats all that matters. It's a nice buck if it's your 1st mount it...

OK Im am glad to be the 1st. Congrats on a nice buck! Sounds like a great story and to be honest you got my pulse going, thanks... To be in the area with that many hunters and still be able to get that shot that counted is awsome!!! Just goes to show that even though you might have hunters around you does not mean you can't get a nice buck. Bet they all woke up after you took that 1st shot, lol. Thankfully that 2nd shot put him down or it might have been someone elses buck. Great story, thanks for sharing.

The one time I had to finish a deer I used a bullet, not worth the risk and is much quicker. Great post's on a really hard subject! I hope no one has to go through this as we all make the 1st shot count. In so far as being connected with reality and butchering your own meat, yea I wish everyone who ate meat saw what the animals go through to appreciate what comes onto your plate. I think many hunters have that value even though we do not all butcher our meat. I feel the gutting process is enough and instills the reality into hunting and is why I will NEVER gut another hunters deer... Again great posts on a hard topic!!!

I have taken 2 deer with my 44 mag in the Winchester model 94-AE. I use the Federal 300 grain CastCore, they seem to work well and will pass through at close range. That might be a little but much for a handgun. At close range with a handgun I would stick with the 240 round nose soft point to get better penetration. Shot placement is critical as stated by screamon demon...

Fire arm's are no joke and being a hunter since I was old enough to get myself into hunting this has always been a big issue with me. I named our hunting club after David Boomhower was found our 1st year in moose river. My friend said this is "No F*ing Around back here" you get lost and you can die, and the NFA club was born. I take pride in making sure everyone gets back to camp safe. I have rescued fellow hunters in time of need and make sure everyone knows what to do if a emergency takes place. Like you said Biggamefish "Safety is no Accident" and "Bullets can't be taken back." The guy who invited him said he spoke to the hunter and he was going to call me, I bet he will wait till next year to see if I cool off, not gona happen. Knock on wood, I have never had a accident but that is prob because I am a hunter who will not sacrafice safety. This guy will never hunt with me or stay at my camp again... Last year some idiot did some target shooting right next to our camp, only problem was that I was in the valley he was shooting. Luckily I did not get shot but DAM their are some real idiots out thier... The woods are not a target range... A few years ago a guy with his son was doing the same thing till my hunting partners confronted him, he was shooting from the dirt road into the woods at nothing... Again I was in the area he was shooting... Scary, now when I go hunting I try to get back a few hundred yards before I start to hunt to get away from the roads... I though deep woods public land would be safe, not if your close to the road where any idiot can shoot. Dam I need to get my own properly, then I can deal with poachers and trespassers, lol.

I had a guy take a shot in camp after "unloading his gun" and putting the fire arm in his truck bed rack. As he put the gun in the rack he pulled the trigger and fired a round up in the air... This was his 1st and last year at my camp. I give people a chance and had a heated argument with the "new guy" about hunting and patterning deer in the ADK the 2nd day in camp. He had a argument with another hunter that came later in the week and with the person who invited him. I could have forgiven all that, but when I was informed of the accident AFTER he left the camp, I let everyone know that was his last strike. He will never stay at my camp again. No place for complacancy at deer camp when handleing fire arms. Hunt hard and be safe!!! My question to other hunters is what accidents have you had and where do you draw the line. I will start to have younger hunters coming up to our camp in two years and will not tolerate any complacancy when handleing a gun. Call me safe but anyone who fires a round off by accident is not a person I want to hunt with... And I do not see myself giving this person a 2nd chance as he was supposed to be a hunter with close to 30 years under his belt. PS: This guy was a compulsive liar, stating he shot more than 300 deer and telling me how he was above me at 2900 feet when I informed him I was at 2800 and telling me his GPS clocked over 28 miles in 3 days. All of which I disproved on the spot...

Such a shame, goes back to knowing what you are shooting... Know your target and beyond...

Fawn = under one year Yearling = over one year I still can not bring myself to wack a doe, but IF I ever hunt a area that needs population control I will do my part if I am allowed by the land owner. In so far as shooting a doe w/fawn, I think on LI it's no problem due to no predators. But anywhere coyote is present and the winters are hard I would lay off any doe w/fawn just to have more deer in my area and give that fawn a chance, but I hunt area's with very few deer. I think fawn's really need the support of the mother the 1st year, after that 1st year is over they will be fine as they have enough experience to survive making it through there 1st winter ok.

Acorns, Deer Movement, and its effects on Hunting
NFA-ADK replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Funny thing is where I hunt I do not see any of these trees... No oaks, no apple makes me wonder what the deer eat to get so fat. I'm by no means a tree expert but I have a very hard time finding main food sources in the ADK forest, most of the area I hunt is forever wild... Any sudgestions would be greatly appriciated... I have studied oak tree's and the last trip to the ADK was looking for oaks but did not find a single one in the area I hunt. Most trees I see are some type of pine or birch or other none productive tree for deer. Any info to help find area's that might contain oaks or apple or beachnut or any other kind or forage the deer like would be helpfull... Help me O B 1 Kanobi your my only hope... Again, ANY information to help find area's that might have these type's of tree's is greatly appreciated! -
Try this: I has some jerk get out of his truck and start shooting rounds into the woods I was down in right next to our camp site. Thankfully one of my hunting partners confronted him and he vacated the area... Shooting back or at some one is the wrong thing to do, it will only get you in BIG trouble. People do stupid things but it's wrong to teach people a lesson using a firearm... Inform the athorities and let it go, not worth getting into trouble over... Check that road before and after you come in to hunt Carp if you see the truck inform DEC. Now go smack a monster BUCK!!!
-
If you see them every year and you have a good population of Bucks I would think it's from fighting. Could be from bad genetics or malnutrition but that does not sound like the case in that WMU. That area is known for having high deer populations...
