now is your chance to tell D.E.C. WHATS WRONG WITH DEER MANAGEMENT
Larry replied to hunterman7956's topic in Deer Hunting
You have to be realistic on what you are looking for. the following is from Charles J Alsheimer’s book strategies for Whitetails: Frankly, in the majority of whitetail habitats a 140 to 145-inch is as close to top-end as it gets. To expect anything more is wishful thinking. -

Letem grow it seems obvious that you have never sat down and talked to the “Pussies”at the DEC. You sound like the guy who stands up at one of their meetings and point your finger at them and tell them you don’t know shit about deer management. I can do it better than you. Well dude what they did was if you own land then you can manage deer the way you want on your land. But your neighbors can manage deer the way they want on their land. What you want is to tell other hunters that don’t hunt the same way you do. That they can’t because it’s not your way. -
I use a 444 marlin with 265 flat points
-
Rob-c you should try H-110 or 296 in your 44mag they both burn cleaner than 2400.

The_Real_TCIII did you look at the 2015 harvest report on page 15 middle set of graphs. Also check the press release put out by the dec. when they released the harvest report.

Dam turkey feathers that’s one hell of a yeast infection. -
Hey AT here in western NY we have good soil and still have farms it’s not like the south eastern part of the state. A 1 ½ year old buck can weight 160lb and have an 8pt rack. Where I hunt, I very rarely see spikes. With a lot of us passing on small bucks I see no need for AR’s. For those who shoot the first legal buck that comes by have at it. It’s not up to me to tell you what shoot or not shoot and I will shake your hand and congratulate you on getting a deer.

I killed my first deer with a DW HV8 in 44 mag they use to come with 2 barrels 1 ported and 1 non-ported so you could shoot lead bullets. i put a lot of rounds though that gun. I use to shoot IHMSA with it. killed 11 deer with that gun. now I mostly use my 629DX when I hunt with a hand gun. I have also killed deer with a 10" tc in 357 max. and 2 rem XP-100's 1 in 35rem and the other in 6mm rem br

Bigfoot 'that's where a Bigfoot was rubbing his back on the tree' -
Most of the top deer hunting states don’t have AR’s
-
Look at it like this Pa. has had AR’s for 14 years with up to 4pt’s on one side, and they just reach about 60% of the bucks kill are 2 1/2 years and older. So 40% are still 1 1/2 years old. (It’s called high grading) Here in NY with little in the way of AR’s we stand at 52% of the bucks taken are 2 ½ years and older. So maybe in 5 or 6 years with passing on smaller bucks being now promoted we could be at the 60% mark and no one will be forced into AR’s. It will be just a attitude change.

I've killed 3 but I don't go after them if I sea one I shoot it

Well said doc I forgot one more thing it’s something I hate but we are not doing are part. The DEC at lease for a few years have MANDTORY REPORTING ON ALL DEER TAGS USED AND UNUSED. With the fine being you don’t receive the tag or tags you didn’t report on the next season and the fine is not assess till after you have paid for the tag or tags. At the very lease this would validate how well their harvest estimates are, and force us to do what we should have been doing all along. -

I’m pretty happy with the way things are. The DEC has given us the ability to manage deer if you own land the way you want. You can put antler restriction on your land or not. You can say no does can be killed or if you want to kill more does you can get DMAPs or even deer damage permits. The only thing I would like to see is the late southern bow season go into January and crossbow though the whole bow season. -
what cal is the gun. I use a 22-250 700rem Varmint special with a 12power. the most I have ever shot in a year was 148 the farthest I have ever killed one was range at 629 yards I have tried shots at 800yds with both the 22-250 and a 6mm but have missed all 8 shots but I have come close.

Hey guys I skin the whole bird and cook it in a roasting bag with fixings it works go for me.
-
Zeus first congrats on getting your first bird. Next there is nothing wrong with shooting a bearded hen you did nothing wrong. If you are happy with your bird that’s all that madders. There is always going to be some JERK who thinks they can stand in judgement of others they think there way of doing things is the only way. I’ll tell you out of 5 turkeys I’ve killed in the fall with a bow over the years 4 were hens. It’s not illegal so it’s nobody’s F---EN business but mind.

I still have mine from 1972
