I am more likely to believe a state wide survey then a hand raiser in any one area. In region 3 & 4 there is probably a large influx of hunters from down state that did not go to any of the meetings but hunt there. Just think what would of happen if 300 or 400 of them came to the meetings when the AR WMU’s were set up the percentages may of been a lot closer. Back to the Cornell survey does say that hunters state wide do favor AR’s slightly (48%to45%) but nowhare near your 80% you can’t just ignore a state wide survey because it doesn’t say exactly what you want it to say

Hey Doc if I were to draw any conclusions from the Cornell survey is that most hunters like things the way they are. With only minor changes like earlier start to the bow season or the x-bow thing well maybe the x-bow thing isn’t a minor change. But I think if no change to the season were made most would be ok with it and only that small vocal minority that complains about everything would be speaking up.

Nyantler your statement about the DEC catering to 20% may not be right. I think you should read the survey done by the Human Dimensions Research Unit at Cornell. I would read the whole thing but the stuff on AR’s is on pages 24-31. This is off page 24: Which one of these experiences is most important to you personally. Having the greatest opportunity to harvest more than one buck per year=8% Having the greatest prospect of taking an older buck with large antlers=34% Having the greatest freedom to choose which antlered buck I take=58% This question seems to be what most of us are saying we want the choice on what we harvest. Some of the responses were surprising and so were the break downs it makes for some interesting reading. No ware on the survey was there any ware near 67% support for AR’s.

I go home from work that way down 251 to 65 pass Mendon ponds park I see 60+ deer sometimes
-
Arrow knocker 2 things first it’s your choice on what to shoot, unless you are hunting in one of the AR WMU’s then you have to shoot the 6pt. Second never pass on a deer you would shoot on the last day of the season on the first day. Do not over analyze it’s suppose to be fun

I would also like to see the late bow ML season go longer. Talked to the guys at the DEC they said there is no reason the late bow Ml can’t go into January. They told me the only reason it doesn’t run into Jan. is everyone wants something to start early instead of running late. Before you think about shorting any season take a look at the survey done by Cornell. deersurvppt2010.pdf

Unless there is some kind of news story out there. I think someone is giving you a bunch of whohee. And if there is 18lb deer out there get out the butter knife it is sure is going to be tender.

I shoot a 444 marlin and love it. But if I were looking for a gun to hunt in NY and only NY and I could by one gun. This is my list of calibers I would look at. Remember this only my list, it is not in order of preference. 260REM, 7mm-08, 308, 30-30, 30marlin, 35rem, 44mag (rifle), 444marlin, 45-70, 450marlin and 50sw that’s my list. Next I would look at what guns they are available in the availability of ammo (how reloadable it is) and at what range most of my shots are at. Now here’s my pick remember I said only one gun to hunt NY; that gun would be a 12 or 20ga shotgun with 2 barrels (1 bird 1deer) with a shotgun you can hunt anything in NY.

thats all it is is a skin condition but i think the DEC would still give you a new tag for one that looks like that deer

the growthes are called Fibroma Wart-like growths found on the skin of white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family are fibromas. They are popularly referred to as skin tumors, or simply warts. Histopathologists identify skin tumors from deer as papillomas, fibromas, or papillofibromas depending upon the predominate type of tissue making up the tumor.

About ten years ago I killed a P&Y during the bow season so I decided to hunt with my 44mag during the gun season. I was hunting at the bottom of this hill and I herd 3 shots at the top and this big Doe came running right at me so I dropped her with 1 shot she was still alive so I finished her off. Just after I finished off the deer this kid about 16 or 17 came running down the hill and said he had just shot a deer and was running after it (exact words). I could tell by the look on his face that the deer I had shot was his I couldn’t keep the deer so I told him I just finished It off for him. It was his first deer he had shot he told me. I help he field dress the deer and told him I would wait till he came back with his dad. When his dad got there he thanked me for helping his son. While I was packing my gear to move they looked over the deer. The farther came over and asked me what I shot the deer with and how many times. I said twice with a 44mag. He tells me there are only 2 holes in the deer and none are from a 12ga. I go I know the farther tells me it’s my deer. I tell him no it’s not the look on your sons face when I was standing over his deer I couldn’t take the deer. I just told him when your son shoots his first deer then tell him what happen. I’m sorry you ran in to group of assholes not everyone is like that.

Letchworth has had an AR in place for a few years. I have talked to the guys who work there the AR was put in place not to get older and bigger bucks; it was put in place to reduce the deer herd by changing the focus from any buck to doe’s. They are seeing some bigger bucks in the park. If you have to be more selective about the buck you have to shoot and you have a DMP in your pocket most guys will shoot the first flat top that walks by; also the best food is outside the park and the deer get hit pretty hard when they leave the park. I only hunt the park during the ML season and I look for standing corn on one of the farms around the park. Then I look for the trail head nearest to the corn and I work my way behind the field and hunt there seems to work. If there no standing corn I look for a field that’s not plowed under.
