  1. Make a crock of old fashion salt pickles this summer...
  2. Slice it and layer in a baking dish with thin onion slices and chopped garlic, add a can of crushed tomatoes, Italian seasonings and throw in the oven at 350 for about 45 minutes and enjoy with rice or pasta. At the end add some cheese over the top and throw under the broiler until melted and caramelized....
  3. Governor Andrew Cuomo today: "We are creating a Central Coordinating Team led by the State Department of Health. It will organize upstate-to-downstate staffing needs. It will organize patient transfers between hospitals." Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............
  4. I did hear that today as well as this may be a season event with the same strain or similar strains of corona......
  5. I have thought about this for some time, now we are all involved in the pandemic at some level, I wish to throw this out on the forum, agree with me, disagree, but I hope we all think about these few words; Be an adult: Show compassion and understanding for others of regardless of our personal beliefs, being respectful of others (posting of offensive pictures and angry words), enjoy the freedoms that our forefather's forged and all those who died for our continuing freedoms, value friends and reach out to old "long lost" friends, be a good neighbor (on here and in our towns and counties), don't be selfish and simply "follow the rules" that are in place, be thoughtful of how our actions and inaction could, and MAY directly affect others and their lives and the lives of their loved ones, find a person in need and have a conversation with them (family,co-worker,stranger), help others, make eye contact with strangers and smile with a simple greeting of "Hello", be aware that there are thousands world wide suffering great losses and battling an unseen disease, be the leader your family needs and spend time with family members, this may never personally touch some of us beyond the mere inconvenience of being told to stay home, above all show maturity and step up and be an adult..... Thank you all and I hope for the continued safety of all medical personnel, first responders and the many who are placing their live in harm's way to help us all!!!!
  6. This virus is 3x more communicable than the flu, and let's face it the bulk of society has gotten out of washing hands and some pretty basic hygiene activities. I work in a public office and the number of people that exit bathrooms and simply DO NOT wash their hands is staggering on any given day, long before this pandemic. I look at it this way if we all stop public trips, stay isolated from each other and simply wash hands this virus CAN'T SPREAD and will burn itself out like a forest fire with no fuel. It sucks being home, isolation, bills and uncertainty but we can stay away from others and be back to normal as soon as possible. If one has to go out, do so responsibly, if not stay the hell home and watch Netflix or tie fishing flies. Think of it this way: I have the virus and I don't want to spread it, or you have the virus and I don't want to get it!!! Best wishes to all....
  7. Just finished up Wild Men, Wild Alaska by Rocky McElveen......great read.
  8. Trapline Twins - Alaska twins Miki and Julie Collins lead a subsistence lifestyle. Been in Fur, Fish and Game magazine and others.
  9. Ditto, I will never have "social media". It's sad when entire families are at dinner, or events and everyone has a face lit up from a screen. A few months back two other people and I sat in a waiting room having vehicles serviced, one was considerably older than me, I'm 59 and one younger. We engaged in polite conversation for nearly an hour and as we all were preparing to leave the elderly woman said how "refreshing" and enjoyable it had been to have had conversation. She added, if we all had phones it wouldn't have happened. Watch today at how many people even make eye contact or can start and carry on a conversation...Sad reflection of our enlightened and enhanced instant contact to social media..
  10. With dogs that are going to hunt and be great citizens I expose them to every possible setting, we visit Walmart and sit out front, vet's office by the hour watching other pets come and go and if I leave the house one of my hunting dogs comes along (within reason). I also expose them them early to sounds like thunderstorms, gun fire and fireworks, either through audio tapes or live exposure (start slowly). It takes a lot of hours but worth every second when they reach their potential and are calm. The only time they get excited is to be with us or in the field, outside of that it's business as usual and they are always in control.....
  11. Start her out in a small crate and she will assimilate that as her den, a canine will not want to soil where they den. Immediately after releasing her from her crate take her outside and reinforce the good behavior. Common mistake with puppies is a crate that is too large and they will identify a part of the crate as a place to soil and that defeats the process.... Also, make sure worms, urinary tract infections, and medial causes have all been ruled out by a good quality vet check....
  12. Greetings, I also want to extend the very best wishes throughout this holiday season; please, be safe, enjoy the present, reflect on the past and look ahead to brightest of futures. From my family to all of yours, HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!!!!!! Dan
  13. I have no cell service in my neck of the woods, I sit quietly and reflect on the outing for a few minutes before the work begins.....
  14. stubborn1VT, If you typically hunt open fields you could sight in at 150 yards and range find some known spots where you hunt and then you can estimate shot distances more consistently from known landmarks. All food for thought and practice pays great dividends in confidence... Best of luck to you.
  15. Sorry for your loss, don't give up on your muzzle loader and "pattern" it before next season and get your confidence back. I sight in using three pellets and it give one more shock power down range. I also sight in at about 2" high at 100 yards and where I hunt (Adk's) long shots are very rare.
  16. Back from a great holiday, only about a few inches of snow on the ground. The temps are trending lower at night and I believe winter has hit the big woods. Oxbow Lake was locked over and it looks like Lake Pleasant is not to far behind. Stay well all.....
  17. I believe that the Poplar Point boat ramp (limited parking) is being left open for boat access. There are lakers and some landlock salmon in the lake, but I've never caught any with great size. Its a nice setting and gets busy during July and August during the day hours. Use to troll right off the bottom dragging spoons with copper line or using riggers...
  18. There have been many a discussion over "hunting accidents" and I stand by what I have posted in the past. NEVER point a weapon at anything you would not want destroyed and never take a shot unless one is positive of the trajectory. It's a miracle that the victim was able to survive a neck wound and wish him a speedy physical and mental recovery.
  19. My daughter is a very small build and we had a 870 youth cut down even further and use lighter loads. With a 12 gas. there is no shortage of options for any game or target.... First and foremost get a shotgun that "fits" her well....
  20. Good luck, shopping is half the fun. I owned a deep V Lund for years with two outboards and riggers. I miss that boat for trout/salmon trolling.
  21. Buckmaster, Thanks for sharing your knowledge and thoughts on this topic. Stay well and track on !!! Maybe some snow by the weekend in Hamilton Co.
  22. To all my fellow big woods hunters, a wish for a great Thanksgiving Holiday in the woods or at home. My family will be warmed by the woodstove, playing card games after dark under the hiss of a propane light after a great cooked holiday meal prepared entirely at camp. Warm holiday wishes and safe travels....
  23. Shot placement looked good, if you were in a stand it might have been angled downward and missed the lungs and allowed her to take off without a significant injury... Best of luck, and you show your ethics in the video well....Sorry you experienced this....
  24. An arrest was made in this case and the suspect was from Danamora.... https://poststar.com/news/local/police-arrest-man-for-tree-stand-tampering/article_289fd5c6-52b2-5efc-9bbd-42aa17e610fc.html#tracking-source=home-the-latest
