  1. I've been sorting out my camera pictures from last fall and just noticed this. I'm thinking a coyote, but it doesn't appear in any other picture. The animal is on top of the stone wall with his face away from the camera just above the stump in the center right of the picture. I have thousands of pictures from this general area and nothing else compares. It's located in Hamilton County and well away from any highways.
  2. Maybe....................just maybe after this week streams will warm up and have been dropping.............have a safe and long season out there..
  3. This is mom...........very mature bear.
  4. Triplets here too, one is much smaller and chocolate colored..It's the one right behind the stump.
  5. The recent Fur, Fish & Game magazine has an article on cubby sets made from cardboard. It's a good read for all....
  6. What stream are near you guys and what current conditions are happening after this very wet spring? Upper Hudson : high, stained and fast Smaller streams are high but not near flood stage and fishing is tough as the water temps are still in the 40's...... Be safe out there if you wade any of this streams and/or rivers, I note some recent erosion along banks and undercuts.
  7. Compass(s), knife and fire starter.....you never have too many and never leave the truck without'em....
  8. Few and far between in Hamilton County so far; but I hunt turkey and waterfowl with dogs in Saratoga/Washington County and they are thick. I pulled a fully gorged on off one of my dogs about a month ago that was fresh...
  9. The season was short for me in Hamilton County as we were slammed with heavy snow and freezing rain very early in November and I am too ready for fall........ Till then I'll make more boxes and prep for fall...
  10. I had some real issues with the strength of the early fluorocarbon line and always use the best line and/or tippet materials you can afford. I personally do not like braid for stream fishing and like the high end available mono out there. I like light lines weather I am fly fishing or spinning in streams. Some swear by braids and if one uses braid know what knots to use to avoid break off......
  11. I target the "pocket water", tail-outs and along deep bank cuts where the water is slower and quieter. Work these small pockets slowly and have just enough weight to "tic" the bottom but not drag or get hung up. I use several small weights instead on one and can adjust properly from there.
  12. I also set the boxes out early and allow them to get weathered and take on the natural smells. Remember NO bait or traps [laced early. Whats great about these boxes are, I make them during off season with my son and daughters as projects, we scout together, I scrounge most of the materials I use and they are very effective..... Best of luck out there !!!
  13. I am in the Adirondacks and early season look great until the blizzard. We need the water and haven't had snowfall in the last few years like this. It will definitely retard very early trout season access in the mountains. I have the "itch" also and my fly boxes are filled and ready to get going.... Best of luck this season....
  14. Well, after this blizzard we got about 30 inches of snow and bitter cold nights. The deer are going to have to wait a little longer for some fresh browse in their bellies...
  15. Correct, now that the forever wilds lands have matured there are much more open spaces with big beech and cherry trees. Back in the logging days the browse was different and some places covered in slash and immature growth you just could't get through and had to travel around spots...
  16. You must hunt near me !!!! I travel 3 miles going one mile map distance getting around swamps, creeks, blow downs, witch hobble and alders.....
  17. Good luck !! It's great to see the guys here step up and lend a helpful hand with a youth hun.....t
  18. I am in Hamilton County about halfway between Speculator and Utica in the Town of Morehouse. I am at a pretty good elevation where I am and that matters greatly with the lake effect snows here. Caroga Lake is South of me and my have less snow. Things are melting fast with the high temperatures and run off was high. Good luck...
  19. I was at my camp this week; about 3 foot on the ground with slush near the ground level. It appeared that the Adirondacks had rain in between all the snow where I am. This week it was in the low 50's and there is now a frozen crust on top of slush. Lots of deer tracks along the Sacandaga River and Rt. 8 where the deer have been herded up for a while now. Not a single track of any kind near my camp in the deeper snow. It feels like spring but I am sure winter will be back before this is all done..
  20. Thanks guys for a fun string of posts here !!!

Any time there is a warm up in the water temps, between these really big thaws. In all seriousness any time you can get on the water and if the main rivers are blown out fish the small tribs with smaller flies and light leaders. Steelies are pretty weary especially if they have had lots of lead bounced around them and don't hang around in any one hole too long if cast over repeatedly... Good luck...
