Off topic but, any Linux users out there? Just curious
JJBat150 replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
Debian is what I cut my teeth on... a co-worker had a hosting business that was running a couple of debian servers in a lights out datacenter somewhere near Rochester. I was intrested in purchasing the business, so loaded up a VM and starting teaching myself... as fate would have it, I didn't purchase the business, but I did keep playing with the server I created. We got a few systems at work that I manage, but it's a cookbook installation, and a custom webmin interface. We're migrating these systems away from the local sites and to a remote data center where another team manages them, so I've lost touch with the production systems; the one at my site is there just in case any legacy clients try to connect. Unity.. I'm still on the fence with it. I've been a windows guy since "Windows for workgroups 3.11"... I've figured out the new Windows 7 interface, so Unity wasn't that bad. -

Funny you mentioned Linux.. I'm currently in Arlington TX attending a week long intro class for work. More of a Microsoft guy, with limited Linux experience in the enterprise world. I've run a few favors of desktop Linux over the years on test boxes. This Christmas I got a new laptop and set up dual boot with Ubuntu, but now after a few days of class thinking about reloading with Fedora. -
As a normal “lurker” and not very often poster, I can see the issues and attacks that occur on this board. Do I condone it? No; Does it make me less likely to post my opinion? Yes. Do I respect the opinions and passion of other on here? Yes. I watch the site on a regular basis to keep up with the day to day chatter. I’ve even learned a lot about people just by reading their posts. It has been (and I’m sure will continue to be) entertaining and informative… there’s always 2 sides to every story, and everyone has an opinion. The discussions that go on here are also local, and of a topic that I am interested in and actively participate in and therefore in some way or another affect not only me but all of us all. Because of the anonymity of forums like this one, people may say something important that they might not be bold enough to state publicly, but it can also encourage a sandbox mentality as well. It's just part of what makes this work, and it entails a certain amount of risk. But it also entails a certain amount of maturity and acceptance of other’s ideas and views. I am on several bulletin boards for personal and professional reasons. Some require a “full disclosure” (name, location, professional affiliation, etc.) upon registering; this insures that if someone gets out of hand, they can be dealt with. It also insures credibility of the posters. I am also a member of several boards where there is no identification needed; does this cause the board and its members to lose credibility and respect? Only if they hide behind the anonymity of the internet. This is something I learned long ago; it’s something I do today and will continue to do tomorrow.

The Trees - Rush There is unrest in the forest, There is trouble with the trees, For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas. The trouble with the maples, (And they're quite convinced the're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light. But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made. And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade. There is trouble in the Forest, And the Creatures all have fled, As the Maples scream oppression, And the Oaks just shake their heads. So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights. "These oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light." Now there's no more oak oppression, For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw.

I've got 3 Moultrie D-40's and 2 of the newer D-50's, and am happy with their performance over some other models I have. Here's a link to internet specials Moultrie has on their website. http://www.moultrief...oultriespecials The D-50 2 pack is actually cheaper that any place I could find on-line (including ebay)

I've always noticed the same silence, and then within a few minutes, it's like I'm hyper-sensitive to any and all sounds in the woods. I think that helps to build an appreciation of what nature has to offer me. Very well said; For me, I don't pray to or for it or tell it I'm sorry; but I will say "Thank-you".. for the experience of the hunt, and for the opportunity to provide for my family.

Best cloth to wipe down guns?
JJBat150 replied to jimbo91's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I've got 2 daughters who are now 10 & 13.... I've got an endless supply of "one-sies", old socks and underware that are used as rags for all kinds of work (most are either close to or are 100% cotton). Just last week I carried a brake caliaper into the parts store in a nice light-blue one-sie and got razzed pretty bad by the gal behind the counter. -
I know some people eat their soup with a lot of wine, others with none. Me, no wine, but I'll say a few words of thanks before eating ... Thanks for being fortunate to spend the time in the woods away for all the everyday issues life throws at me. And thanks for the memories of this year's season; successful or not, there's always some new special memories created and burned into my brain.

Put yourself in their boots.... you've a firefighter (and a damn good) who loves his job. You go to a situation like this and are told by your administration if you fight that fire you can and most likely will loose that job. what would you do ?

As a 20+ year firefighter (both volunteer and career) and a volunteer Chief for 15 years, let me offer a little insite on what I know about these situations. NYS requires towns, cities and villages to provide fire protection to properties contained within their political boundaries. It can be through a variety of different methods, and it is primarily supported by taxes levied against the property owners. Not knowing all the specific's of this exact case (but using information I know from other cases similar to this one) look at the situation: Property on fire is outside of any organized political subdivision, therefor it is NOT provided the luxury of organized fire protection. (and probably minimal taxes levied against said property) The nearby city (or other political subdivision) has a fire department (either paid, volunteer or combination) and offers a "subscription fee" to provide coverage to properties in the unincorporated areas... owner's discretion, they know that if they need Fire Protection services, this payment insures it will happen, if not then the city FD can and like it this case refuse to provide services. I do however seem to recall that most departments in this situation will allow firefighters to provide life-saving measures only. (Yes the argument can be made that extinguishing the fire is a life-saving measure; but that's for another forum on another day) Good point. Because of these issues, mayor / fire chief / whoever has told firefighters that they cannot fire this fire, and if they do, they will face disciplinary actions, and possibly dismissal from their job. I remember reading about a case a few years ago where the crew responding extinguished a grass fire on a non-paying property using the context "it was threatening the neighboring house that was a paying property".. WRONG ANSWER; they were disciplined. Not sure about other counties, but in Ontario County, we don't get money from the county for mutual aid to other departments.. . when we need help, they come and help us; when they need help, we go and help them; it's understood that the costs even out. This is why I an so glad this is NOT the case in New York State. We may complain about some of the gun laws we deal with, but at least there are a few things NYS does right.

So I was in the stand yesterday listening to tree frogs, and swatting bugs... Would make the title of a country song ...."Tree Frogs and Tee-shits"

Elmo; it's Remington 870. Simply push the slide release and bring the bolt back about a quarter to half inch. The shell stays in the chamber and it's held in place by the extractor, so it keeps dirt and other debris from getting inside the chamber. I suppose that if the action is cycled far enough back then the shell would be totally removed from the chamber, and in theory could be ejected, but I've never seen that happen.

Shotgun hunting, since I was 16; my father always took the gun out of battery anytime he was walking; I remember sitting with him, and before we'd start walking, <click> and he'd move the action maybe a quarter to half inch out of battery, even if throwing it over his shoulder on the sling. He never taught me this in all his safety lessons. But I find myself doing the same thing anytime I put the gun down.

Last year turkey hunting I was set-up along a logging trail looking down it (maybe 50 yard line of site). Off to the left I heard what sounded like a pack or horses running through the woods. I was so upset, ( and trying to figure out who the hell was on property with horses) that I stood up to see. Just as I stood up, a herd of whitetails broke through the brush and crossed the trail right in front of me. They were 2 and 3 abreast, and I counted at least 8 tails running past me, but I'm sure there were more. After I caught my breath and (checked my pants), I paced out the distance they crossed from of me at 8-10 yards. No clue what spooked them, or where they ended up, but definitely an experience I'll never forget.

Something I posted on another site... though it was quite fitting to this thread :

My name is Jim, and I'm a life long resident of Ontario County. I'm a long time shooter, hunter, and out-of-doors person. Shooting and hunting since I could fit a gun in my hands, and an very fortunate to have access to very productive hunting areas right outside my back door. Been lurking around the site for a few months now; figured it's time to register and contribute to the site. Have a gaggle of firearms, mostly hunting and recreational shooting. I shot bullseye competitions a number of years ago before family responsibilities starting taking up more of my time.. but the urge is starting up again. I work in the IT field, and an very active in the fire service around Ontario County. Looking forward to sharing information with everyone on the board.
