We can't recommend anything without a few more details, ie; draw weight, arrow length, point weight, etc.

Nice deer indeed. I am with you, hope he makes it! That is a nasty G2 on his left side! Also looks like you may have the same scoring issue on this deer as The "King buck", right G2 split or not?

What got me started on this whole thread was my string needing to be replaced (which came in the mail last Friday just haven't had time to get to the shop). I guess not being able to shoot for over a week now really got me thinking about my bow and how it was set up. Like if a simple string change can affect how my bow shoots. Or how fast my arrow is really flying, what if I shot 125 grain broadheads instead of 100, a heavier arrow, different rest, shorter arrow, etc. There are a lot of different variables in archery, starting with the person shooting. I have killed deer with my current set up and I am perfectly happy with it, but I always have that question in the back of my mind, "what if?" I am not against change, I will try just about anything at least once. FYI: My bow is 2 years old, Diamond Black Ice FLX, 29" draw, 72 lbs.

It would be interesting to see the difference in velocity and KE between my current arrow set up (372 grains) vs a heavier one, say around 400-450 grains. I bet the velocity difference is negligible, but the difference in KE would be more impressive. I also wonder how accuracy would differ? Maybe I'm just asking for trouble, but my scientist occupation makes me wonder about these things. Perhaps a study of my own is in need?

True, but I think half the battle is knowing what your actual fps are.

I have thought recently about buying a chrono to check my speed on my bow (along with guns). Do any of you check your arrow speed by chrono or do you rely on what the manufacurer has said? Not too many archery shops in my area have chronos, so that is why I have considered buying my own. This way I will be able to see the difference in any little adjustment that is made with my bow. Maybe it will be a complete waste of money, but what the hell...you can't take it with you, right?

What type of .30-06 ammunition to use for deer hunting?
chiefbkt replied to mossy725's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I have shot the 168 grain Winchester ballistic silvertip in my gun for about 9 years now. I love how they perform and how well they shoot in my guns (Remington 7600 and Savage 110). I only shoot 2-5 times a year so I don't mind spending the money on them. Although I have thought recently about switching to the 165 Hornady customs. Not sure how well they will group, but may buy a box to see. -
Hard to tell from the angle, but looks like a pretty decent 2 1/2 year old with some interesting characteristics on his antlers. It might be worth letting that guy walk and see what happens to him next year. Nice deer.

Those are some nice looking bucks! The one 8 point has a pretty good body on him.

Those cards must be formatted before use or they are pretty much useless. Glad to her you were able to clear them!

I like how you said hurts the pocket book and not wallet!

I'm sure next time I check the cams there will be more without velvet. Haven't seen the big one on cam in a while...

All depends on your type of hunting. I have a Savage model 212 bolt action that I can shoot comfortably out to 150 yards with. I have killed many deer with this and have only taken 2 over 100 yards with it. The rest have been under 50 yards. You can't go wrong either way, just grab a few boxes of different slugs and see which ones work best in your gun. If you can't get any to shoot nice groups (which I doubt will happen) maybe you need a rifled barrel.

Price quote on any of these
chiefbkt replied to magnumhunt's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
If you have a well known gunsmith in the area, I would take them there. Usually they can give you a pretty good idea. -
Did you shoot one before you bought it? Or did you just take the chance and buy it? I haven't been able to find anyone in my area (yet) that carries or even sells them. I would just like to check it out, draw it, maybe even shoot it before I bought one, not that I need one now. Maybe in a couple years they will be more readily available and I can try one out then. It is one sweet looking bow, and from the sounds of things it shoots sweet too.

WNYBuckHunter, I was going to order from them but they don't have online ordering. I really wanted to get them ordered so I can have the new string put on by the weekend so I went with the VaporTrail. I really don't like not being able to shoot. It bothered me so much that I went and bought a new target, lifetime bow hunting license, and some misc crap. Made me feel better momentarily. My bow looks good in my case, but I think it looks better in my hand!!

some good pics from the last few weeks

Sweet deer, and you said State land? Impressive. -
This is the first buck I've got on camera without velvet. Also got a couple of other bucks with velvet still on.
-
I also switched from Hoyt to Diamond. I loved my Hoyt, but thought the Diamond had a smoother draw.

Ordered the vapor trail vtx for my bow (diamond black ice flx) $96 shipped with a couple extras.

Just talked to local archery shop and he recommended Sixty X bowstrings. Never heard of them, but he said he thinks they are better than the Vaportrail. Anyone use them?
-
Well, shot about 100 arrows yesterday and when I finished shooting I noticed some fraying by my peep. The last thing I want is for my string to pop, so I think its time for a new string. Looking at the Vaportrail strings...any other suggestions?

I may have to look into the these bows next time I'm in the market for a new one. I figure if I can get a bow set up for under $1200 I'll be happy. Thanks.

Nice looking buck. Good luck.
