The direction of deer hunting
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Arrow Flinger's topic in Deer Hunting
I have seen companies do it to their property with only a permit from the local municipalities. Projects I have managed have enclosed a lot of property as part of the contracts. We never had to drive out the game. -
The direction of deer hunting

Doc, They way NY state's population is headed you may not see the problems or at least not as fast. You can divide all the land to parcels you want but if the population isn't there to develop it, it doesn't make sense. I know we were third in population but I heard we were either close to fourth or were fourth this year. -
Wasn't trying to debate whether is is or isn't. Was stating their published position

The bold statement would really explain the large decrease in non resident license prices for the coming year if teamed with a statewide AR decision

Where does it leave us if DEC has already states it's position that it is a social issue with no biological benefit?

Have the money, now I have to choose…

Luckily the odd calibers and the expensive magnums seem to be the ones that are on the shelves the most right now so ammo won't be an issue as long as you buy it before you go anywhere. I wouldn't want to walk into a mom and Pop place in remote Canada because the bag with my ammo didn't make it and have to look for a rare caliber. I would consider cost of shooting it. Availability. And it sounds like you aren't going to cheap out on the glass and mounts. ( I think this is one of the biggest mistakes guys make) Don't underestimate that 308 you have. Buddy in Maine drew a moose tag last year .308 at 225 yards. 30 yard death sprint and it was done. Short of Grizzly I wouldn't think twice about carrying it. -
Camera view to the shooters view could have been a bit different but I agree. I was saying "shoot know shoot know."..lol. Based on his comment at the end about "another buck" I think this guy got surprised and the deer came in quickly. If the shooter could see what the camera did he should have shot earlier. That said I would have taken that elevated going away shot in that clearing as he did. Inside 50 yards and being elevated it was a big vital picture in the open.

Virgil, I grew up hinting and fishing that lake and area. Wonderful deer hunting and the fishing is awesome. Besides what was already mentioned there has been a small down tick in walleye populations from when I was young, I think mostly because the State stocked tiger muskies in there. There are three things fish do (Family friendly version. eat swim and breed. Tigers are sterile so that only leaves two things. I have seen some swim by the boat launch in our lights while bullhead fishing and they are dam near as long as my out stretched arms...HUGE! Good Ice fishing. Good post spawn bass fishing in the outlet creek on the south end. Nice little canoe trip to do it if the water is up.

To be honest I have shot 5 wounded deer in my hunting career. Not one had a bullet wound. All 5 were arrow wounds.

I re-read it last night. I was looking for info on just that. Personal transfer of ammo from one person to another. They certainly aren't too clear on whether you would be considered a seller at that point. I have run into it several times, you are shooting like sporting clays and decide to run another round. Give a buddy a box of shells.

I have seen reports of whitetails actually scavenging from available sources. A gut pile would seem to be an easy mark. They certainly don't know what that pile is from I wouldn't think.

I think you hit on something Doc. I have been very luck (I believe) in that I have always had a close group of friends and family that I have hunted with for years with more of a CAMP attitude rather than an individual attitude. There has always been older guys in the group that grew up with deer drives as part of their hunting arsenal. Most of the drives we did were positioned still hunts like you described but there were drives that required a bit of noise to spook the deer out of very heavy cover as well as allowing us to keep the drivers in line for safety sake. 2 thick cedar swaps come to mind that depending on the path you were taking many times I even left my gun with one of the watchers.

If I shot like that with the sabots I use, I would have to take out a second mortgage prior to every deer season. I have to admit that when I was younger and slugs were .99 a box I was more likely to pull the trigger
