  1. yup...all ground up and ready to place in the vacuum sealer
  2. you gutted it, right? where did he hit it? was it poor shot placement? And let's not make this rocket science. A freaking idiot can select the right bullet with very little effort. Federal even puts the little pictures on the box of what bullet to use for what. If a hunter can't pull that selection off it won't matter if he hunts for 20 years he is probably just not mentally capable.
  3. LOL. The 700 was tongue in cheek. The 444 is a great round and in the NE woods it is really at home. I have shot the 35 Wheelen and it is a grat round too. The Wheelen is just necked up 35 and I think the case on the 444 is almost identical to the -06 just necked up even further.
  4. Coyote rig. any 22-24 but not like a ballistic tip. you don't want to blow it apart. of shotgun with anything from 2-5's. I think I would rather try to trap it. then you are still going after it when you aren't there...lol
  5. He looks in good shape. i hope they go in season where you are
  6. What I am saying is....practice with a 243 is cheaper. The ammo is more readily available. the 243 is a softer shooting round. so. If we use you hunter that doesn't practice that much and only sends a box a year down range....I THINK that a harder hitting round may make them a flincher and effect their accuracy. I do believe that no one can predict what caliber would be shot more by shooters...but I bet that the cheaper the ammo the more likely they are to shoot. as far as admitting....If I were choosing between the two for me I would go for the 444 too. But. There are a bunch of calibers I would pick ahead of the 444 if other choices were available. Nothing wrong with the 444 and bigger may be better but how big is too big for deer? are there different levels of dead? If we keep the logic going let's butch up and lock and load the 700 Nitros
  7. If you are near me I would be willing to help you set this up and work up a load for it. I can get you on 50-200 yard tables at the club I belong to. PM me
  8. You are right it isn't a big bore, but more than enough gun for a deer. The 243 is more than enough as well with the correct parameters. I would rather see a hunter with a gun they can practice a lot with, feel very confident, develop good shooting form and place a good shot. There is NO need for a big bore in the deer woods. If you choose to use one then that is great but it isn't required to make everything tick.
  9. I have shot them just like that with my -06 and had blood trails that long. I have seen 75 yards with a hole in the heart. Any 243 will do if it is done right. But personally I like a bigger caliber with more powder and a ggod bullet. If I get presented a qquartering to or head on with my -06 in my had I am not worried about the bones. I know it will go through and the deer will go down.....if I do my part.
  10. withthe racoons for reference I think a dog as well
  11. Doc, DO you have any other clear pics from that set up that could give a reference of height and distance?
  12. I don't think they should allow the rifles at all. they are unsafe. I think it is much better to allow arms like the 22-250-...30-06...300Win Mag in a pistol...lol. I can walk out my front door and use my Encore in a pistol configuration but not in a rifle config ...in the same calibers. DOesn't make sense to me.
  13. I ate some that was made with domestic turkey. I didn't make it myself. it was ground and done with a jerkey shooter. It was good. I bet you don't get much though. Beef has to be like a 1/4 to 1/5 yeild on the jerky. If it is the same a breast of 5 pounds would yeild a pound or a little more?
  14. that's what I wondering. Didn't know if you used metal or the plastic. I have never seen portland used.. Looks great!
  15. turkeys, deer small game and fish. I do it on everything I hunt or fish for. Great info
  16. 700 gets my vote as well. I grew up near the factory and it was my first rifle. Accuracy has been gret in the ones I have owned. The savage would be my very close second choice.
  17. Maybe it is just me, but do you think you get the biggest bang for your buck hitting the big cities like Central Square and Ballston Spa? If you want numbers to show support I would think you would focus in the more populated areas...my 2 cents
  18. Trip # 2 All sabots opened as i would have expected. Now to work on the load and the grouping and find a friend with a chronon to check the velocity No signs of any pressure related issues. Going to work up to the 39 gr of Longshot
  19. Trip #1 pictures of sabots The Blue sabots are the ones I am using and you can see how the bullet pushed back through the sabot. The white sabots are from commercial sabots ans on one of them it did the same thing. I had a very cushioned gas seal under the sabot for this load. Didn't work as I had wished.
  20. light batter and deep fried or sauteed like shrimp scampi. I also soak over night in milk of buttermilk
