view from stands overlooking corn plots
Culvercreek hunt club replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
G-man, figured yours were food plots. The 400-500 acres near my place (that doesn't allow hunting) is holding about every deer in the area right now. I stopped at the road side and the kernels are very dry and I think ready...unfortunately the ground isn't...lol -
I agree Doe....show o the ground and more forecast...I am dogging that track. Bummer luck....hiope you are able to find him at some point.

view from stands overlooking corn plots
Culvercreek hunt club replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
the only corn I want to see around my house is stubble or bent over stalks with no ears on it.....This late harvest is KILLING my hunting....lol -
it could have been a car acciden't...broken and a compound fracture. I can picture it as a bumper hit. It would have basically died off (rotted off) and healed over. They are amazing creatures and their ability to overcome injury is as well. At a farm I used to hunt there was one that was shot and the front leg was just dangling.....it was after season that we first saw her....it took a couple weeks and she was around with the leg piece missing and it healed to look much like the one in the pic. G is spot on with his view on the birth defect. Friend took a buck that had a very palmated antler on one side. the other side front leg was either a birth defect or a very old injury. the leg was like skin over bone. It was all there but no functioning for him. It just swung. the shoulder looked like someone had boned out all the meat and put the skin back. There was very little muscle structure there. we couldn't find anything wrong with the bone strusture....just wasn't and muscle to make it operate.

Thought I would throw this out there. I got my permit in September and am in the market for a .357. I am looking for a stainless revolver with a 6" barrel. Might entertain a 4 or an 8 but for it's use I think a 6 would be best. I am partial to the S&W's and have had an opportunity to fondle a Dam Wesson that I took a fancy too (loved the interchangable barrels but guy woulnd't part with it). I am in Rochester and would prefer a FTF transaction. Let me know if anyone has anything they are looking to move. This will be a working gun....not a collectors or show peice. Thanks Bob

Type of gun/rifle
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Joe2SCH's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
If it is turkey and deer the .308 would be great....but I would go a 12 ga route....skip the 20 for now. a 12 gives you the option for light loads for small game and heavy loads for turkey and waterfowl. -
Best of luck, Doc. hope it goes away befor ethe shots have to come into play

Meat Grinder
Culvercreek hunt club replied to BKhunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
This is the grinder I picked up. Firdt time I was able to use it was Saturday night. it took everything I threw in and the chunks were partially frozen. It took me longer to clean up than it did to grind 50# of meat. The motor never even groaned. I couldn't be happier with this thing. I noticed they have put them back up for sale on the site I used...they were on back order and now they are listed for $30 more than when I got mine....but if you wnat one this one gets 5 stars from me. http://www.amazon.com/Commercial-Electric-Grinder-Sausage-Stuffer/dp/B002HJBMTA/ref=sr_1_51?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1320089164&sr=1-51 -
2011 Leftover DMPs available Nov 1
Culvercreek hunt club replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
If you had gotten denied on the &J previously that wouldn't hurt your chances of getting a 7H now. Better to hedge your bet. the one they would send you would have been considered a permit from your first draw.....the 7h would be for this supplemental. I say go for it ..can't hurt ...maybe you will have a banner year and get and fill both -
Nephew just smoked one in Genoa.

Hey Burt....had he lost the blood trail and started following tracks? -

Culvercreek hunt club replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
it was all random so they may have had 1,000....900 could have selected and 800 were given out. I believe last year anyone that had selected an area and were denied and the area had leftovers......they sent them int he mail to the ones denyed before they went on the street as an available area. bet a call to DEC could clear it up for you. Would be a bummer to go to the store and get 2 more only to find out you had two coming in the mail....lol doubt that could happen -

I didn't think about the Federal lands. Does anyone know what the lead requirements are for hunting there with a shotgun with slugs. I believe even for small game the shot is non-lead...how about slugs? -

if you guys get a chance to look at the areas that are available on the DEC interactive map....one thing that popped out to me is ....there is almost no state access land in those areas. some of the areas on region 8 are rural areas and have a lot of prime habitat but no access. Bummer really. -
I gotta goo to this one. Football tomorrow night too...grrrrrr...lol

Beautiful morning.....wind was from south.....perfect for this stand.....moved to out pf the east...not so much. Doe winded me...no shot. No time to move....only a couple hours to hint my daughter has a cheer competition.

Snuck out for the last hour last night....two bucks came through just as I got settled. Small four and a basket six. Saw something I never had before. They wandered out to about 50 yards...began licking and grooming each other.....then the six actually mounted the four....not just a hop on...but mounted with motion...lol. the four stood there. It happened three times and I tried to get pics and video but it wouldn't come out. Weird.

What is the best choke for rabbit hunting
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Dave's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Never had much luck with improved cylinder unless I was walking and jump shooting them or jumping brush piles. We mainly ran them with beagles....modified seemed to be beat because they always seemed to be around 30me yards..sometimes further -
My father had terrible performance out of one of the winchester rounds...can't remember if it was accubond or silver tips. I think Accubond. they were punching right through. darn near looked like he was shooting a FMJ. I wouldn't use ballistic tips....Have seen crazy damage from them. Pygmy is right on...simple coreloks as long as they group

Remington 700 BDL and it enjoys a diet of Federal Premium 165gr. I have shot chucks to bear with them and my one buddy borrowed it and took and Elk and a Moose with the same rounds. I have had good expansion and very good retention with them. Check the bullet swap thread if you are thinking about changing and want to try some different ones. I shoot the Corelok out of my 30-30 and they perform very well also.(180's in that)

Under Armour smell...??
Culvercreek hunt club replied to mossy725's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
There just isn't a substitue for a good shower...lol -
They sell buck shot and you can't sue them for deer in NY. I bet it is allowed in other states and I would have to look at the regs but you might be able to use them on yotes......would make a darn fine yote round.....and personal defense.....The Judge is chambered for it

Under Armour smell...??
Culvercreek hunt club replied to mossy725's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
LOL...that is too funny. I went to silk base layer nad I don't seem to have the problem any more. It still wicks great and doesn't fit quite so tight. I hated the feeling of having the hair on your legs and arms pulled after a day in the underarmor. The silks I sue are what our military are using now. They are available in some surplus stores....definitely in PX if you have a freind or relative in the service
