  1. Amen Doc....I would hate to be a young hunter starting out and trying to pay the fees. At 18 and paying for college....100 bucks meant A LOT! I have found butcher shops that cut for hunters for the hungry that aren't listed on the DEC site...ask around...I donated 13 deer a few years back from nusiance tags. Big bag limits dpnt mean it is going to waste. I know lots of folks that don't hunt but love venison...I always have someone very willing to take them. The ones that can afford it py the butcher bill....the ones. That can't I cut it up. Bag limits should be based on what is optimum for the herd..not worrying about what anti's say...my two cents
  2. I have set up quite a few and it is much better with 2 guys but if you are by yourself this is what I do.... Bring an extra 20' rope and 2 12' ratchet straps. Put the base of the ladder where you think it should go and lay the stand on it's face fully assembled. Tie the rope ont he platform and stand on the ladder base to hold it from sliding....pul the rope and the stand will stand right up. get it settled against the tree and attach the mid brace. climb up so the mid brace is at your knees and swing a temp ratchet strap around the tree and put a hook on each ladder up right. Tighten it...move up and do that one more time. at this point you should be able to reach the platform strap to install it. I have done it without the ratchet straps but only if someone is holding it for me. It is still pretty hairy even then. If some one else is with you do the same but have the other guy pull the platforn snug to the tree while you go up. Best bet is with someone. I hate doing it alone in case something happens but I have had to do it.. Good luck and be careful
  3. WNY...but how did it hold up during.....awwww nevermind
  4. I have the walkers digital muffs....I love them and I even use them to mow the lawn now. My hearing is about shot but I gotta try to keep as much as possible. takes a bit to get use to them against a gunstock but the don't interfer with bow shots at all.....amazing what you can here with them
  5. Hell DOC....caution is one thing but if you focus on "any" danger that much might better stay in the house....it is a dangerous sport and despite all the caution bad things can happen. I agree with stacking the odds in our favor but I guess even on the couch a meteror could hit us...lol
  6. We were going to rent a dozer for our trails but opted for a mini excavator with the backfill blade....worked great and let us do a little trenching too to keep the areas drained. really good for digging out rocks without making a huge mess. can get one with a 4-5' blade for around 250 a day
  7. Thanks guys....sold....staying with my fixed pin.
  8. Eddie----that is cold....just plain cold...lol
  9. Kinda what I was thinking Fan----if I have my knife out anyway....what is the extra few seconds? Looks like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist....bet the guy make some bucks though
  10. Great pics...thanks for sharing.....is there bear season where the camera is?
  11. last week my buddy pick ours up and 695 pics....we were like WOW!!!!!.....damn brach tripping it in the wind......695 pics of leaves.. I have forgotten to turn it on too
  12. If I recall correctly I think some of the south eastern states have bag limits of one deer per day. Eveen in as far north as Maryland I think those guys that hunt all over that state can take something crazy like 20 some deer using all the seasons. Let's face it. They could very easily increase the take with shrinking numbers...but call me a pesimous....I agree with Bubba....the money hungry group will milk the hunters of NY for all we are worth....Why ...because most will pay it. Say I am a college kid....my freaking license will run me over a hundred bucks this year...who is that benefiting? Not the sport
  13. Brings tears to my eyes just imagining it...I can't bring myself to use one of those butt outs either.
  14. have one buddy that swears by them but I have always been a guy that favors less moving parts too. I was going to invest in one of the tridium pins but thought about mounting it on the swing sight. I don't do any late season cold hunting but have seen snow before the bow season ends and ice worries me with these things.
  15. OK guys......I am picking my bow up from the shop this week and I am way behind on my shooting this year. I want to change my sights to a brighter pin.....as long as I am switching I was considering a pendullum sight (spelling?) Anyone use them or have any insight into them.
  16. Well Steve...to hold out for 3 seasons he must be a slammer......I can't wait to see a pic of him.....hopefully on the ground with a big smiling Steeve in the background...Good luck
  17. Takes a little extra time but the used are many....brown sugar never gets hard....stuff stays fresh....and I have hd elk and caribou in the freezer for over two years and it was perfect
  18. Most of the bars I grew up going to use to ask if you had a gun on you when you walked in.......if you said not they responded "Here you better take one"
  19. my dad has them too...and I am glad he does. I would go home horse from having a "conversation" with him. Unfortuantely I am probably just a few years away myself. Too much construction equipment probably. I did get a Walkers Digital Ear muffs last year for fathers day. I love those things...If only the squirrels are as big as they sound I would give up hunting deer.
  20. LOL. I am actually a surveyor by trade and beleive it or not...Deer love to eat that surveyor's ribbon. Had them do it all the time. I am not sure what attracts them to it but I have seen them do it myself and one job we couldn't leave the nails in the ground we set up over because the owner was afraid they would eat the nails too.
  21. I have the shower at my camp too...nothing beats a hot shower after a cold hunt. Of course my stall is inside ...lol. I think you will be a little more stressed for room in the PHP. but if you have the propane there for cooking...and lights...best $120 bucks I spent
  22. The vaccum pulls te fibers of the meat apart...the half hour lets them stretch...the release lets the fluid rush into the voids when it happens...then I let it sit in there. I do it with any meat I am marinating...It really get the flavor throughout That has been copied and pasted to my puter Doe...sounds delicious
