  1. I typically shoot for being settled in 20 min before first light
  2. Sick of seeing these " herds " of slickheads.... why cant bucks herd up... ?
  3. I hunt with my late gramps help all the time.... got one last year on thanksgiving with his rifle and ammo...i know the feeling. What an awesome ridge runner you got , holy mass and tine length batman! Making him proud! Congrats on the "big country" buck!
  4. It may be due to the oil u used. I am always sure to clean / lube and remove any oil or cleaners. A properly cleaned gun should function in just about any temp. I am beyond picky when it comes to cleaning my guns, and i have never had an issue with anything. Strip your gun, clean, lube, and be sure to dry any excess or wet looking spots. Best of luck!
  5. Rem 870 is a tank. I have beat my through the bush for almost 20 years with not one issue. I saw dicks had them on sale w/ scoped slug barrel and bird barrel for 260. You cannot beat that deal. My dad is on season 47 with his and same, no problems, ever. As far as the rifle goes, im also a fan of the rems.
  6. Love seeing " big county " bucks..... looks like there is some mass in the gene pool up there!
  7. Trees fall around me all day everyday..... most of them are the trees im in...lol. part of the job. Always helps to inspect a tree before u hang your stand, look at the trees around ur stand for issues, and alive or dead-woodpecker holes are a clear give away to stay away. I would guess that the tree that fell on the stand had holes, looks like it was rotten towards the top.... good luck!
  8. Snowy days are great ! Covered in inches since last night and snowed on and off all day, crazy gusts though.Couple doe this afternoon then a pile of 8 this evening.... wheres the bones!?! ?!
  9. I love ml just as much as bow... i never push my property and by ml they realize my yard is a sanctuary. Last yr on opening day i remember seeing about 20-30 deer. They pile up in herds and its great.... just seems the big boys stay hidden though. Either way, depwnding on where u hunt ml can be great!
  10. Congrats!! As far as cuttin it up, i ALWAYS prefer to skin them while they are hot! Makes a huge difference ( so much easier ). Try using google to find some butchering basics. You wouldnt want to make a mess of you first deer. You should be fine to leave it since tonight will be cold. My only tips, if you want them, are skin when its still warm, quartering doesnt take much more time so u might as well do it when u skin it, hair is the ENEMY ( always cut the hide from the inside out) , do not rush yourself, get some sharp knives, and most importantly, cut the tenderloins out first , remove fat/silver skin, marinate while u quarter, have a beer or three when ur done, wash up, fire up the grill and cook them loins hot n fast!! ENJOY
  11. I have a 700 6mm rem. Passed down from gramps. We both have taken a pile of deer with it. I have never had to track more than 50yrds. The big buck i got last year was a pass through the shoulders. Definately enough "knock down", definately enough to kill, definately not the biggest rifle out there. The rifle is a tack driver, i feel confidence in a shot over caliber size is the way to go.
  12. Today i am thankful for the goofballs that stomp the woods and push deer to me happy turkey time all!
  13. Check with the farmers....
  14. Pack a lunch. Buy a thermos. It wont happen again. Or, sleep in and go oit when everbody else is coming in...
  15. Little movement. Haven't seen the big boys since last week of bow. Plenty of slick heads and small bucks. Some chasing still happening. Surprised to not have bucks tailing all the doe i have seen.....surprised. ah well. Still time!
  16. Well...behind the house is the old 870 xpress magnum and yes i shoot the 3" , or the t/c omega 50 cal. When im in catt county i use grandpas rem model 700 6mm or the bush gun is a marlin lever 30/30 killed many with all but the 870 has alot of bodies on it!
  17. Nice ole swamp donkey... hit the scale @ 100lbs on the dot
  18. I considered getting a rifled barrel, first its the 300$ then its 20$ a box after that...no thanks. 3" mags for 3$ @ dicks and i pull 4" @ 100yrds all day
  19. 7mm. But ur gonna have to shoot a few before u buy, obviously. I have an old 6mm rem that i was worried about being too light, which is spot on with 243, trust me, it makes a mess
  20. Took a big fat swamp donkey....she came in with 6 friends, no bucks....could not let that opportunity pass.... tenderloins are marinating.
  21. Elite. I have the pulse.... does everything you expect it to do. Took some time switching to a new bow but now that im comfortable i absolutely love it. Made in ny, best warranty available, fast (@70lb/30"draw/340+fps), quiet, solid, reasonably priced, best "back wall" out of any bow i tried, very easy to draw. They also have the "hunter" model which is worth a look. either way, everybody has their favs, pick your top 5 by research and shoot them all till u find a perfect fit. Id buy another mathews if elite didnt exist.
  22. Really? My dad got a 3.5 this year and it was the best tenderloin! i have ever had! Maybe its the whole rut / time of year and or they are burning to much fat or something....
