  1. Thanks again guys! Bigamefish, I got a tanning kit from McKenzies. It was actually pretty simple to do. Here are the instructions from McKenzies: http://www.mckenziesp.com/KB/HTML%20KB/mckenzietan/mckenzietaninst.asp Wooly... its funny that you mention practicing with roadkill because I witnessed a doe that was hit by a car a little passed my daughters school. The guy must of had some damage to his car, not really sure because he didnt stop. Anyway I had to call the DEC because the doe broke both hind legs and bedded down a few feet in from the road. As I was looking at her I noticed that she was COVERED in TICS. Never saw that many before. Secondly, the DEC used a head shot to put the doe down. Not something I want to see again. Definately need to keep practicing though. Skinning the head, especially around the tear ducts is tough and thinning the lips is a lot of work. But I definately look foward to doing it again this year.
  2. Defrazzle I could be wrong but couldnt you get a logging company to come in, cut down trees, and pay you for the wood?
  3. Nice pics... Do you keep all your cameras high up in the trees?
  4. Well Said!!! I couldn't agree more defrazzle! I have to agree with most comments that having the youth season so early in October will have little effect on the majority. I would think that the temps of the youth season would allow my daughter to sit with me a lot longer and actually enable her to enjoy the experience. I know for sure that a much later date in the season would be very different. Just my opinion. However, the biggest issue I see is that NYS has a firearm season which takes place during the peak of the rut. I believe that this truly effects the majority of hunters. Most states in the midwest that grow big deer don't have a rifle season peek of the rut. I have to believe that this is the reason why Long Island deer are able to get as big as they do and you hear about big deer taken more often. This, in my opinion, is more of an issue.
  5. The second plot with the "kinks" doesn't look so bad!!! I'd you to come over to my place and see some "kinks"! lol Clover looks great!!!
  6. I personally was never interested in crossbows, however, I am all for using them as a tool to get someone new interested in the sport. I could definately see myself buying one to introduce the sport to my children. Good Luck
  7. One of the guys that I work with just bought a house in Miller Place that backs up to about 6 or seven acreas. His kids are always in the woods and he is extremely cautious. He checks them everytime they come out. I guess he missed one because his oldest son has two strands of Lyme's Disease. The poor kid has had fevers, aches, and half of his face is paralyzed. The doctors seem optimistic, however, they said it could take up to a year for his the paralysis in his face to go. If your in the woods on Long Island, I wood be extremely careful. Also, I don't know how the chiggers are this year, but I can't imagine that its not a problem as well being that we had such a mild winter. I wonder why it seems to me that the tics and chiggers are such a problem on the island, but not as bad upstate. I have yet to pull a tick off of me when I'm upstate. knock on wood!!!
  8. Looks like a lot of work but will definately make the longer sits much more comfortable!! I like the gun holder.
  9. I'm definately all for adding time onto the southern zone hunting season. At first I was iniatally bummed about it because I enjoy having two opening days... long island and upstate. But, being that opening day falls on a Monday I can hunt on the island and then head upstate Thursday night. Definatelly looking foward to some extra weekends!!!

    Great mount and trophy room!!!
  11. Wooly... the quality and clarity of your pictures is incredible!!!
  12. You cant beat the weber grills for quality. You definately get what you pay for in this case!
  13. Hey Split... Quick question for you... I have on plot left to plant on a little less than a 1/4 acre and I am going back and forth on either planting brassica or turnips. Which would you plant and why if you don't mind me asking??? I already have about an acre of corn broken up in three different spots and a little less than 1/4 acre of no-plow planted. I also have apple trees spread out on about 6 acres. Thanks
  14. To me, hunting means spending time with family and friends. I look foward to walking through the woods with my children pointing out deer sign, watching them reel in their first smallmouth, and pointing out different types of birds that land by our bird feeder. I really enjoy the whole process of hunting from scouting, putting in food plots and hanging stands. I look forward to the ride upstate, stopping at the Stone Castle Inn for dinner, and getting the trailer ready for the weekend. I really enjoy the stories after the hunt and spending time with friends and family!!
  15. Work looks excellent, especially the stone work!!!
  16. Looks great Fantail. Seeing deer in there feeding makes all that hard work worth it!
  17. Thanks for the info!!! Whats the reason as to why you don't recomend the rows to be less than 24 inches?
  18. Nice work Dave... what did you use to till that plot?
