  1. This point may have already been posted as I admit, I did not read all 56 pages ok. If so please disregard. when antlerless permits are handed out, they ar elegal for any der under a 3 inch antler. Whats to stop hunters from taking a 2 inch spike and puttinga dmp on it. Or how about the number of button bucks taken with a dmp. It seems ind of counter productive to AR to let this happen, but I cant shoot a decent sized crotch or 4 point. So if AR becomes the law of the land, do you punish someone for taking a 2 inch spike or button buck they can legally tag with a DMP. These are deer that could have grown into mature bucks.
  2. accirding to what I understand you can also use and dmp you have during late ml season as well, but only in the wmu they are for. Or in the case in the nz when archery starts 9/27, you can use them all for the last 4 days of september. And if you do not fill your regular season buck tag, it can also be used for late ml and early nz archery
  3. If shootign a gun mad edeer run away, you would never see a deer after the first season you hunted and shot. Now I know that waterfowl hunting usually is a lot more shooting than deer. Thso morning I was sitting in a stand and on the edge of neighbors property, they were blasting the snot out of thr waterfowl. At 8 Am a doe walked out of their pine grove, ate in the meadow I was watching, and went back in toward the shooting. They get used to it the same as they get used to cars or chainsaws or any other noise. BTW if it had been yesterday morning when ml season was still going on, the doe would be inn my garage tonight. It is as if they know.
  4. where we hunt, we try to limit the numbe rof does taken. However when we hunted state land, and it was legal, we shot does regularly. Our thought was if we didnt the next guy in there would. The ratio of bucks to does should also be a determining factor. If you saw 20 does in a week I would say that there is a high doe ratio and shooting soe of them would actually help. I saw 10 does this past week, none of which were in range. If onehad been, I would not have hesitaited.
  5. like the sz bow hunters, us nz muzzleloaders get a week to ourselves. The only dumb law is the law that no one pays attention to. They give us a regulations guideline book when you get your license. Maybe reading it would help.
  6. I guess my only question would be if the deer was hit with a car and had a broken neck, how did it get from the road to the woods?
  7. I would guess to go to water. As an animal or human bleeds out, they crave water to replenish the lost volume they have. I only say this as a nurse and EMT. Every person who is bleelding I have worked on asked for water. Of course I did it with an IV. But naturally the deer will run to water. It is instinctual.
  8. I was being an anti dramatic. What would you think th eheadline would have said if someone took a pic of that? Man beats deer defenseless deer to death with a tire iron. Draatic or not, it is the reality of the situation. Then you get ticketed for doing so and the rest well who knows.
  9. May not be ethical by the definition but it is moral....and I would have done it. I dispatched a deer on the thruway. lady and guy hit it..broke it's back and the lady was freaking out. The guy was a panty waste and would do nothin. I was not hunting and the only thing available to me was their tire iron. When the police arrived they never even questioned it when the lady told them what happened. Now there is a pic for the anit's to get. A man beating a deer beside the road with a tire iron. Again am not saying that I would not do something, I am ust saying there could be consequences. I dont know about where you live, but when I call a DEC officer, they show up and take care of the problem. Or they would give me verbal permission to take care of the situation, so there would be no repercussions. I cant see going to court paying a fine and risking losing my huntiing priveleges for 5 years to put an animal out of its misery.
  10. and if you get caught "bending" the law dont complain when you get a ticket and possibly lose your hunting priveleges for a while. Then the LEO will be an a$$ho** for giving you the ticket. Call them first rather than answer to them later.

    ML week

not yet, but i have today
  12. I have seen some who dont seem like they forget easily. A few years ago, I shot a 6 point in an alfalfa filed. When I shot him, there were 11 other deer out there. They just looked at him until I stepped into the field, then they spooked off. I drug the deer to the edge o the field and cleaned it up. After I tagged it, I left it there as it was about 3 PM. I got back into the blind and about 5 minutes later, the rest of the deer came back out to graze. If they had an intact memory, you would think that they would remember what happened 20 minutes before and that there as danger in the field. I also filled my DMP that day about 4 PM.
  13. A study i read a few years ago claimed that a deer only has about a 5 minute memory time. Do I believe that? I am not sure. However as previously stated, a deer has a great instinct sense and the rely on it heavily.
  14. I guess I saw the humor in his statement. nice deer
  15. no I reload for it. 115 grain nosler partitions and 50.5 grains of IMR 4831.
  16. Do you have a day of the year that sems to be better for you for hunting? Mine is November 4th. I have killed more deer on nov 4th than other day. Over the years, I have harvested 7 deer in different years on that day. So, regardless, I take that day off from work and hunt the entire day.
  17. I forgot to add my nephew got his first deer even saturday evening. A nice 115 pound doe or so.
  18. I saw a few deer, too far for the ml. I got called home Sunday as my old dog was not doing well. I am going back to camp wednesday and hunt the rest of the week.
  19. I am all for ending the duffereing of an animal. I took my old lab to the vet today, and only one of us came home. But you may want to look up the word ethical, because in the terms of hunting, it would be unethical to finish off that deer. That being said, I can not fault any person for doing what they thought was the right thing.
  20. some times nature is cruel. And as bad as it sounds my dad used to say coyotes need to eat also.
  21. the easier solution would hav ebeen to contact a dec officer and have him or her come and take care of it. If you put an arrow in that deer and do not take it, it is illegal.
  22. Psychiatric nurse, family psycho education specialist on a mobile mental health team. But this week, I am a hunter on vacation.
  23. ok here is a run down of my weekend. yesterday I was in my treestand during muzzleloading. I was wearing camo. I got shot at when I was 17 feet in the air. I used my cat like refexes and ducked the bullet. Unfortunately, I was not wearing a safety harness, so I fell out of my stand. Luckily, I landed on a tree branch and then onto the back of a deer that was under the stand. He took off running and crashed into a tree. I was not wearing my motorcycle helmet, so I got a bump on my head. I know this will be removed and I will say it is meant to be taken lightly. In other words all laugh a little. It keeps the Dr away better than any apple grown.
  24. I will get my usual 5 or so hours. But that is every night
