  1. I am fortunte. My stand is just inside the area where pizza hut delivers. A large meatlovers pan usually does it for me. I actually take some water. I eat breakfast before I leave camp. I dont eat lunch, then have dinner at camp. I am rarely out all day anymore, since there are always things to do at camp. Usually 3 or 4 morning sit then back out for the afternoon.
  2. then why dont you carry 15 speed loaders for a Ml. I guess you cant get in the same situation where you will need 15 shots with a ml? A loaded speed loader does not weigh anymore than a shell.
  3. and how does one pull off height and weight restrictions on a doe? I doubt the deer will get on a scale ar wait to be measured. Doc you are right, pus there is the whole hunting show mind set where they shoot 180 class bucks all the time. People want that here so they can say they are jus tlike Michael Waddell. The bad part it it can not happen. Way too many factors. Like I have said pen up deer feed them just what you want them to eat, it will happen. In nature once in a while. It just a ploy to get guys who see few deer in a season, such as myself to stop hunting. I might get a dmp every 4 years due to the low numbers. So far this season, I have seen three deer, two of which are in my feeezer. an 8 point and a doe. I will not get a dmp again for three to four years. If I have to pass on the buck or two I may see becuase they arent trophy racks, I will not spend 100 bucks to have little to no chance of getting a deer. I am sure lots of others will do the same.
  4. congrats Ed looking forward to both story and pics
  5. here is a pic of the 8 point I got on 10/30/10. 190 pounds dressed. I called him in to 30 yards with the primos bleat can. I was on the ground standing against a tree. He cme in behind me with hos nose in the air. He saw me and flagged and took two jumps and stopped dead in his tracks broadside, and stuck his nose back in the air. That was his fatal mistake. He went 50 yrds down thw ridge and piled up. No pics, but the first weekend of November, I got 120 pound doe and filled my 6a dmp. I am tagged out until late muzzleloading season. Second pic is my nephew with me and his spike.
  6. damn we are so good. Like I said practice makes perfect.
  7. 22 here tonight then 30s tomorrow, teens saturday night then low 30s sunday. I love it. Look out bears here I come.
  8. statistically only one in three deer hunters harvest a deer in a year in NY. So I am guessing quite few say they did not get a buck this year.
  9. a haha rocks thgat is hilarious. I dont think the question was how many do you take with you to hunt, the question was how many do you carry? I live 20 minutes from my camp. That doesn't mean I only carry 4 shells to camp with me. It means I carry 4 in the woods with me.
  10. Unless I intend to slaughter the whole population, I dont see the need to carry loads of ammo. I guess it is a personal preference. I guess I feel if I have less ammo, I need to make them count. Like I said people have a ml, they carry 3 or 4 total and do fine. They have a gun that holds 5 they need 15 or 20. Just a mind set I guess especially when they seem to do fine with the ML and 3 extra rounds. I have an ex hunting buddy who has a 30-06 semi remongton which holds 5. When he sees a deer, the gun gets emptied regardless. That is one reason he is an ex hunting buddy. I guess true sportsman fire a couple warning shots, or practice shoot and release.
  11. with my rifle I carry 100. two 50 bandaleros around my neck criss crossed. Oh yeah and one in the gun. My muzzleoader one of course in it and 125 speed loaders in a little wagon I pull behind me. Oh yeah and my rambo knife just in case I need to defend myself. You never know when an organized deer stampede may start. ;D Actualy ml loaded and three speed loaders. Rifle the same one in it and three in my shell holder on my belt. I do however load the same shell in the gun until I finally use it. Is anyone else noticing a pattern here? People state when carrying the ML they load it and 3 or 4 speed loaders for a total of 5 st most. They drag out the shotgun or rifle that holds 4 or 5 they carry 10 to 15. I guess I would wonder why you need that many extra in a supposedly hgher power more effective gun. If i had to fire 15 times at a wounded deer while chasing it, I guess the wound was not that bad or the chase was on instantly. I doubt all 15 hit the deer, so where were they flying around the woods and at what? Ethical quick clean kills.
  12. Who is wiping them out? I think the rest are that good because we shoot more often wiping out the population. Practice does make perfect. Could most of them be killed by the alleged 65% of hunters that supposedly support AR's? ??? ? Or are the other 35% just that good??
  13. Well, I would prefer to still be out there after a whitetail. I enjoy the hunt more than the harvest. That being said, I could not pass the 8 point 190 pound buck or the 130 pound doe. The good news is I have a buddy who is out of hunting time. He has a 6c dmp, and that is where camp is. He is bringing it over tomorow, so I am back in the game. I still love the feeling of the two or three days before the opener.
  14. I envy you guys with the anticipation of opening day. I am tagge dout, and losing interest until late muzzleloading. Good luck all
  15. last weekend in 6c I saw one in the swamp. Too far to shoot at with the ML. I am tagged out for deer until late ml, so a bear is my plan
  16. band saw? we use a sawzall to remove the legs and separate the carcass at the hind quarters, so you have the whole saddle of in one piece, then take it apart. BTW nice deer.
  17. Doc, My condolences. It mad eme think I may start using a harness if i get the new stands I want. Again my sypathies
  18. I would think if they deplete the fawns in the spring and summer, in a couple years, you will see many less deer.
  19. I would finish it and wait a while for the person who wounded it to show up. If no one showed up in a reasonable time, I would call DEC and say I found the dead deer, and let them take it to the food bank.
  20. I am thinking they shoudl mke them BO every year and everyone will want to wear it ;D
  21. well ty. You are welcome at my camp anytime also
  22. And if I kill him, I m sure the neighbors aren't. We have almost 400 acres. The neighbors to our north have 200 which by the way for a mere 12 cords of wood next summer, we will add to the land we have. Anyway they make drives on their side. The deer cross over to our side and we were passing the small young ones up, as we agreed at camp nothing less than a 6. Anyway I have let three crotch walk during these drives, this year only to have the neighbors shoot them. Yes I know they were different deer as we saw them hanging after three different drives. This year, I got a really nice 8 point 17 1/2inch inside spread 10 pound deer. His body size impressed me more than his antler size. Did he get that bag because I passed him up last year? hell no. He got that big and old becaue he was smart enough to elude us. However I was smart enough to out smart him. Anyone who thinks they can grow and mold deer to what they wants is again fooling themselves. Stop watchibng canned hunts on outdoor channel.
  23. If you wan tbg antler bucks, plant the right thing that promotes it. Seems kind of selfish to me. If you really think on 150 acres with everyone else shooting anythng, you are doing QDM, you are fooling yourself.
  24. sound slike an advertisement for archery hunting. The meat will be much more tender and tsaty. I personally do not see how the implement of taking the deer will make a difference. Just my opinion.
