  1. First I can't see how this plan will work and I'm not for it. But bowhunters don't shoot does. the percentages are lower. The DEC is giving bowhunters a chance to prove them wrong, giving them a chance before they bring in muzzleloaders for a two week season. AND HOW DO BOWHUNTERS STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND HANDLE IT?? All there is is whining and complaining and I'm not even going to hunt comments!!! Bowhunters constantly refusing to shoot does has led to this, and its going to get worse!
  2. "Or, that there aren't areas where coyotes have a significant impact on deer. Those areas are marginal deer habitat anyway - due to excessive snow or closed canopy mature forests" This statement shows why some people feel coyotes have a bigger impact on deer then others. The diets of coyotes in wooded/forested areas have a greater percentage of deer then the coyotes in agricultural areas. Combine that with the fact that there are fewer deer in these non agricultural areas to begin with and you have coyotes having a greater impact on deer populations in certain areas then others.
  3. Oh I see it says in certain antlerlered deer only zone. Didn't know they had them.
  4. Why can't you shoot a deer of either sex with a bow in northern zone? As far as I know, correct if I'm wrong. My bow stamp lets me shoot a deer of either sex anywhere in state, combine that with my muzzleloader tag I have and I get an antlerless tag anywhere in state.
  5. "So is there anyone besides NYB that is taking a stand on this, or are we all alone .... again?" I don't think comments like this help to get gun hunters on board "Run bow season from September 20th until the end of December. Have your early MLOADER (antlerless only) and your youth season (regular rules). Allow Crossbows (many people who buy them come to hate them anyway). One buck per year. 7 day firearm season.. Basically just like Ohio" Not the first time I've heard wanting to cut gun season to 1 week.
  6. Most sittings I don't see a deer. Unless I position myself where I'm overlooking the neighboring hills/fields, then I'll usually see a deer or two come into a field somewhere in the evening. The days of 5-6 deer together are long gone!

    hhmmmm....

I have two that are with their mothers still. Real small and not this years.
  8. But does it matter what the population is? Do they care? Or do they just hand out permits when certain groups complain about too many deer. Then they cut back when ONE group (hunters) complain loudly enough about the lack of deer. Do they really even need to know the #'s?
  9. Maybe it's because bowhunters percentage wise take far fewer antlers deer then other hunters.
  10. If you think about why does the DEC even care how many deer there are. Farmers complain about crop damage = more dmp's DOT and road kills = more dmp's Small towns complaining about too many deer = more dmp's Foresters and regeneration = more dmp's Even antler restrictions "shoot a doe if you want meat" = more dmp's Just hand them out until hunters start loudly complaining of the lack of deer. Then maybe cut back a few. So basically do they really care about the actually population? Or do they want the least amount of deer possible that will keep hunters mostly at bay.
  11. Trying to figure whats so bad about Stubby's post. Just look at the #'s, percentage wise bowhunters shoot far fewer does then gun hunters. I believe that's his point!
  12. Does anyone else think the DEC can do a lot better in being honest in what they want? Shouldn't they give the hunters the population/deer densities of wmu's? The carrying capacities of wmu's and then what % of the carrying capacity they want the deer population to be? I wonder if they know or even care? Or if they try to get hunters to shoot as many deer as possible till hunters complain there aren't any.
  13. "Ok lawyer called back yes you have to be able to access your land in NYS via easement by necessity" Don't understand this, WHO has to give them a right of way? Don't think I'm giving up a 50' strip of land through my property for someone to get to there's! You buy landlocked I always thought you need to get a right of way usually through purchase.
  14. yes/no/maybe? A lot of other variables but if all else is equal except weight, then yes you will get deeper penetration
  15. My bow shoots no where near 300 fps and I can't imagine having a pin for every five yards. I would first go to 20-30-40-50 or just 20 and 35 with the sight you have. See how you like it. It will open the sight picture
  16. Why doesn't the state come out and tell hunters what type of deer density numbers they want? If they have goals for population control hopefully they have #'s. IMO in order to have older mature bucks you need more deer then the DEC wants.
  17. "I will say this though..for all the talk these initial companys have on setting aside decommissioning funds...most of that is just a drop in the bucket as to the real cost to get rid of them when they no longer are cost effective...so who do you think these towns will go after to accomplish this? I'm figuring the land owners" and when that company declares bankruptcy! then let the fun begin
  18. when people mention "in your area" regarding nearby crops, whats the distance we are talking? neighbors? 1 mile? a few miles? Just curious how far away "near by" is.
  19. ALL ? I don't know about that. Isn't most of it to make yours, mine and others lives easier? I bet there's a lot in your life you could have easily lived without but choose not too, many which involved big businesses and money.
  20. "This spot is about as BAD as it gets for late light in the a.m." Not really, take away the snow, put him in the trees and then add foliage.
  21. Been thinking it for a long time. I can shoot three doe anywhere without drawing antlerless tag. Thats just crazy deer management.
  22. just let me say my experience with Harriman is driving by it on thruway. But i see a mere fraction of the deer there that there was 30 or so years ago.
