  1. It's up to the parent when the kid is ready to hunt. Not the state. I think the age should be lowereed, but a parent needs make the final call if he or she will take their kid hunting. I started going gun hunting with my father and uncle when I was about 5. on occasion they even let me pull the trigger....this was 40+ years ago and time were different...Hell we brought our shotguns to high school (locked in car) and hunted with the teachers after school in the corn fields behind the school .
  2. Detroit went bankrupt for many reasons. Not just because the auto industry got in trouble. But I won’t go into my theory as to why. I’ll just say that the productive people left Detroit, leaving nothing but God’s clowns to populate a once great city….watch an episode of ‘hardcore pawn’ and you’ll see what I mean. As for gambling in NYS…who cares…go piss away your SS check if you want…good luck!
  3. No way would I turn him in. But it sounds like you and your father have issues. Most fathers I know would tell their son about the 12pt and be happier if their son gets it. They would never hunt near their sons stand and take a buck away from their kid. When I hunt with my nephews, I much rather have them get a deer than me. I would find a new place to hunt. Let him do his thing and you do your’s. The bond between father and son is more important than hunting. But if you are actually consider turning your dad in, your relationship with him is already broken. Spend the time he has left mending the relationship. If you call DEC on him, it will be broken forever.
  4. depend if it's public or private land. public land = 1 to 2 hrs before daylight. this way you can shine your flash light at the other hunters walking towards you...usally turns them around. Private land = 1/2 to 1hr before daylight. on private land one usally knows all the other hunters and where they hunt
  5. agree---over run with pumkins...best to hunt the second week if you can
  6. if its a live tree it could be: (a) , a Moose stripping the bark. I've seen a few moose down in Fawnstock state park do that ( monster buck if its a dead tree its a bear eating insects
  7. Take it now. leave a note that they can pick it up if they call you. when they show up get their info (name address and nunting tag #). Tell them if they come back you will have them tresspassed off the property
  8. with a bow they run anywhere...usally thick stuff with a gun (12 ga w/ lighfiield slugs) they just drop in their tracks...on a rare occasion they might go 10 yards...But I mostly only take close shots (within 50yrds)
  9. Check out the NYC DEP's website: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/recreation/hunting_and_trapping.shtml you'll find lots of city land to hunt. you'll need an NYC access permit (also on the website) Good luck
  10. To those union folks who commented on my rant. I do not hate any of you. I’m sure you are all good people, loving fathers and husbands. Good to your neighbors and communities. I hope you all enjoy your lives and get everything you desire. I just don’t want to pay for it. So I’m sorry, I should have limited my negativity to public sector unions. I have friends and family in public sector unions. Individually they are all good people. Collectively they suck. - The union sucks the dollars out of my pocket (taxes) - The union sucks the creativity and ambition out of its members…why work harder than the next guy…we all get the same pay and raises - The union sucks the jobs out of our state. Why would a company stay here…they move to right to work states If you work for a private company and are in a private union….that’s yours and the company’s decision. I wish you well. Public sector unions I despise….BUT I do not despise the members…I actually pity them….they will never really know if they are worth the $’s they make. I think they all know that it’s unfair for them to work 20 years and retire in their forties making $75K + a year for the rest of their lives, while their non-union neighbors will be working until they are in their mid-sixties all to pay for their retirements. Again enjoy the weekend and have a successful hunting season!!
  11. I guess i'm out as well...it's no fun ranting by yourself. I did say you might have been correct though. BTW this wasn't meant to bash teachers unions...sorry if you took it that way....it was meant to bash ALL unions. have a good weekend.
  12. I guess, but most civil disobedience is actually illegal. The world has turned upside down. Or maybe I’m just seeing things clearly now. But many folks are sheep willing to be shorn. I won’t be cropped any longer in silence. Enough is enough. They will still take my hard earned dollars and give it to societal parasites, but I will be vocal about it. If i wanted to hunt or hike that land I would have
  13. a few might be Elk (from PA), Wolves (from Canda)...certain sea mammals (seals, manatees, turtles) on the coast....I believe all of these have been documented albeit rare wanders of wayward crittters,
  14. That land belongs to you (US Citizen's)...not the federal government. Its a shame that folks would be afraid to use (hike / hunt) something that belongs to them

    atv

I never have, but seen many folks do it. They get deer, so I guess it works for them. I've once seen a guy in his 80's drive to the top of a ridge and sit on the atv...he was too old to walk well. A bunch of us pushed the ridge for him. He saw deer, but didn't get one...I think it was his last hunt. He died that winter
  16. Bet me a doughnut? or me be a doughnut?...or maybe i'm just a nut? you might be right, but it doesn't change the fact that unions have stupid rules and are harmful to the country. ask yourself why do 30% of union teachers send their kids to private schools?....why do a third of your members want their kids educated by non union teachers? and why are you surfing the net talking on this forum, when you should be educating someones kid? Is today some made up holiday or have you worked 200 days already this year?
  17. yes they are the enforcers of union rules and contracts...Thanks
  18. There was absolutely NO evidence of the cougar that wandered through NYS released to the public prior to it being killed in Greenwich CT. In fact for months after it was killed NYS DEP was stating that it was a released pet. Only after CT determined the animal to be a wild cat, did NYS release evidence to the public. Hence the one and only cougar known to have walked through NYS might never have been known to us if it wasn’t killed in CT and proven to be a wild animal by CT state
  19. Don't fully blame the politicians for this one. if its at a public school using public funds than blame union rules. I've run up against stupid union rules a lot. Can't move that ladder (need a laborer). can't wipe up that spilled coffee (need a union janitor)...in this case, can't educate a child...need a union teachers aid or union teacher
  20. "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship" ---Tytler Both parties suck, they sellout to business interests or social parasites (welfare /dole, public sector unions). The problems of this country can't be fixed....the only thing that they can do is kick the can down the road. We'll all be dead by time it falls apart in 50 to 100 years from now. But after that the nation will split up into 2 or more countries. One will be led by hard working industrious people (like our founders), while the other will remain as it is (like England after the revolution). A third will most likely be ceded back to Mexico (South West) If you want to learn more look into Igor Panarin. He’s a Russian economist who predicts the decline of America. http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB123051100709638419. MMMMMMMKAAAYYYYY
  21. yep...and that why most most bucks down here are kinda small and young. but you are right about access to land. get the right farm or estate and you are guaranteed a wall hanger each year. Hunting down here (putnam / westchester) is VERY easy if you have land access....not so hard even if you hunt public land. even a fat old fart like me gets a good deer every couple of years
  22. I love finding cameras in the woods. I used to moon them years ago, but now I just leave them where they are. They let me know that I need to find a different place on the public land I hunt. I hate seeing flashlights walking towards me at 5:30am on opening day
  23. Lots of deer in Putnam....easy to get a small buck or doe. problem is there are are a few hundred (maybe thousand) pumpkins in the woods come opening day. One year I hunted a 500 ac DEP property and the DEP estimated 150 hunters were on the that 500ac that day. Still bagged an 8pts ...thank goodness for stupid road hugging pumpkins
  24. I wouldn't sit in the same stand for 3 or 4 days in a row. I've always thought a stand needs a break after 2 days. If I were you I would move your stand a few yards (+/- 50yrds). also 30 to 40 yrds off a deer trail is a far shot (for me atleast). get get a bit closer to the path. But if there are deer in the area, I wouldn't still hunt them with a bow....I would sneak in and out of the stand morning or night or stay the whole day.
  25. Wildcats160, I doubt you suck at hunting. Most folks that claim to be great hunters just have access to great hunting land. At least this is the case in my part of the state. Down here if you get permission on some estates or farms, you are guaranteed an 8pt or better every year. However, maybe you have access to good land and just don’t have much luck, but 2 deer in 3 years isn’t bad. Go to a few hunting shows and talk to some guides and sit through a few presentations if you want. But like anything else, the more you do something the better you’ll get at it. Good luck
