A lot of good bow are suggested to you. I do suggest the only way you will know is go to several bow shops and try them, when you get that bow in your hand if it just feels right that the one you should buy. It does not have to be the highest priced one. The other factor is make sure they measure you to make sure when you try the bows it is at the right draw length.

snowshoe hare cycle
sweet old bill replied to striperbware's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
the dec is the best to contact and get info. I do know from be a brown and white rabbit hunter in my younger days the cycle runs like a 7 years spread from very low amounts to a high. Then the rabbits get the mange, they die off, the fox, and yote then get the mage and also die off... now at 71 with bad legs, and no more dogs I sure miss hearing a pack run....it use to be even not great but you could get some runs in North Pharsalia NY and that like a hour above Binghamton. But the forrest of red pine got to large so nothing for the white rabbits to eat on... -

go to archerytalk.com and you will find several reviews of the current hot bows. The bowtect mid priced bow is also compared to Hoyt and several other brands... -

Anyone else feel this way??
sweet old bill replied to Renegade Hunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I hunted for about 20 years in North Pharsalia off of One Eye road ( 7500 A's ) of state land. Now I sure always hear lots of shots from deer drives after opening day but sure can not tell from the shots if they are from LI or from Norwich .....I had a smalll archery shop and sure loved to see hunter coming into the area and stoping buy for arrows, lure and other misc items... it helped my overal profit. I am sure the other local busines also thank all from coming into the area. I now live over in Oneonta NY, to be closer to the kids etc. I rather be hunting in North Pharsalia on state land than over here were all you see is posted signs and no state land. Be thankfull for what you got. The shots will also move the deer around. -
opening day and only one shot at 830 am in back of me on the side hill. Went back in at 930 and took the wife to the store in Oneota and on the way back looked across from my house on swart hollow and on top of the hill there was 7 doe / fawns. Nothin in the Pm at all.

We have had all summer 3 mom doe's with there fawns in thefield in back of the house and also a young buck that we watched all summer, he was a 4 point buck...not very large in body, but was in good health. My grandson just came in last night and said he now lays dead, about 100 yards from our 2 man tree stand, someone shot him with a rifle from the road, he ran downhill to the small stream and made it just across it and that was it for him . It makes me so mad that someone shoots a deer out of season, and then does not have the balls to followup on the shot. The yotes have alread eaten off the back end so it must have been tuesday when he was shot.

you must also have a black heart, I am sure you will go to hell for these type of acts.... I wonder if my small saw will work to make real great rubs, have a 3 prong small rake for the making of the scrape, and of course the last thing to do is pee on it.... and on the way out each night pee on it.... sure would be a wonder if that guy sets up on your false scrap and gets the biggest buck on the ridge... Ha HA

Yes carbon arrows will break if shot into a tree. I would suggest that if you want to use a 3rd pin you look at the distance from the first pin ( 10 yards) to the 2nd pin (20 yards and make the 3rd pin the same distance gap...it should then be close to 30 yards as a pin. But I sure would never recommend just moving or setting up a pin without taking the time to shoot it in. ALso in all the years I have hunted over 55 years, I never have had to use a pin that was shot in over 25 yards....if the deer is past 25 yards, lots of brush or even a twig can cause the arrow to miss that kill shot and just wound the deer. SO I just let them walk.

slow here as well. Not seeing anything in the bright daylight hours...that first 1/2 hour of light and the lst 1/2 hour prior to dark still seeing deer. But can not for the life of me am able to tell if they are a buck, doe and or fawn....

At 61 years old I fell just less than 12 feet and broke my right leg in 9 places. It took me a full year to be able to walk in the woods again so it has been 9 years of hunting 100% on the ground. I have found that my about of taking deer went from 2 or more a year to one every 4 years or so. The key tips is always play the wind, use natural ground blinds ( fallen maple tree ), make sure the deer head is down as you try to get the bow up to draw and shoot. I also found that it sure plays to keep washing the hunting togs with baking soda thru out the season. As deer sure seems to have super noses. I also found being on the ground the shot went from 30 yards and in to more like 20 yards and in. Due to the amount of brush in the way as a deer is feeding to the blind. But one of the other major issue is you still can take a deer when it is eye ball to eye ball and that old heart sure seems to beat like a young man again...

My sister in law says she has some issues with waiting time due to the power was out there till I think they get it back on Thursday. She says the big problem is big trucks coming up from the city and they geting gas in 5 gal cans gas for ther own use as well as selling out of the truck to people who have cars stuck with no gas..... I would look under middletown and call a few stations there to get there direct feedback...I know there is no a problem from Liberty and up. Most of us did not lose power and all the gas stions are open.

King Ferry is a outstanding place to hunt. You have to either be there on line or maybe now you can call and get a tag to hunt there for the day. Lots of farmer fields, with stands of hard woods. Lots of big deer in the area...I use to bow hunt it.

well thanks for sharing your buck with all of us and good luck with your business . -
prior to the storm hitting, should be lots of feeding and then they will go to heavy cover. I see being inland we are now forecast to get several days of wind in the high 20's and some level of rain. With these type of conditions, they are not for the weak of heart. Like me being in the 70's. I will wait out the storm and then go see if any of my ground blinds are still in the town of Franklin.
-
I am next door to were you are hunting in the town of Franklin on swart hollow road. Not a lot of dere, lots of yotes, not also a lot of turkey. Seems the turkey is at a low from the past spring, lots of rain did the chicks in...I see most days the same adults doe's and there fawns...but so far not a buck to be found.

still not sign of the chase period in Oneonta area. I seem to find it is right around the last week of Oct to the first week of November for the chase period to kick in... I did have 11 doe's on the lawn yesterday morning in light rain.

I shoot both and have just about the same setup. I find with fixed broadheads that I like the 400 a little better. But just for 3D the 500 shoot very well.
-
Wow sure did not see any like this when I lived in North Pharsalia...but I am sure there is more than one around like him... good luck and hope you get the chance to take him...
-
with the bow I do not want to have the issue if I shoot a deer not be able to follow a blood trail due to the rain. If in snow no issue...with bow or gun...
-
sure sounds like it is the scope setup and not the rifle. Were did you get the rifle and was it the bolt action model...and what type of cost for a new rifle... I had that occur and had to take the scope off and start all over. I found I did not have the rings on the scope seated the way they should be, after geting alll back together I started out at 25 yards, if you are on at 25 yards it will be close at 100 yards. I found I was just a few cliks off and made the adjustment and was set so far ofr many years. I shoot both the 150 and 165 loads with not much change at all and also both remington and western mfg of the bullets...

Why you want to insp your arrows prior to shooting them.
sweet old bill replied to erussell's topic in Bow Hunting
that been around for several years...it is just a good safety reminder to check your arrows prior to shooting. With carbon they are either good or bad. They suggest as you remove arrows from 3D targets you inspect each arrow. Most times the damage is when you shoot arrow after arrow into a targets with several people shooting . When I practice at home I make sure I use several spot when under 25 yards, so I do not stack the arrow on top of each....
