  1. go to aa local archery pro shop and have they measure you for a bow, key is draw length, also do not get over bowed, if you are starting a bow in the range of 50 to 60 lb will meet all your need for hunting anything in the USA. Once you have your draw length a good place to see a lot of high priced bows that are in your range of 400 dollars are listing on http://archerytalk.com
  2. It is a shame that people do not ask and just walk on to hunt. I like to ask first and if the answer is no just thank them. I had some guy with his son last year park in front of my house in the rain, open the truck window and was showing his son how to shoot a doe on my front lawn from his truck. I ran out in just my BVD's and they drove off without taking the shot. I do have 1 place that a guy from LI owns that give me the ok to hunt and he asks me to make sure if I see anyone to ask them to leave, he hunts just for gun so for me it great, to hunt with the bow there. He asks that I not shoot doe's and only 7 point or bigger. I just hunt from the ground with my bow, I do have a plastic chair in a ground blind that is by a fallen maple tree. I did not take a deer there this year but did see a few bucks that maybe in the 7 to 8 point next year. at 72 years young I am thank full to anyone that allows me on there place to hunt. All around me on Swart hollow road , most of the land is posted. Not like my place in North Pharsalia that I had for year were I could walk off the back door to 7500 A's of state land.
  3. I am just 72 years young and not 782, must be fat fingers...
  4. HI, I am a 782 year old hunter that this year had to stop hunting in cold weather due to my illness of COPD, the cold does not allow me to hunt as my lungs burn and just a loss of ability. I just found that if you use a mask, this allows the air to warm inside the mask and it does reduce the problem. SO I am back hunting.. anyone else have this problem and how did you get back into our sport of hunting.
  5. at 72 I stay home and help the wife we have the family coming for the bird and also a early xmas day as we travel a week prior to xmas down to Myrtle beach SC. I hope all have a great day with family and friends and if you are hunting ( it 9 degree here ) with light snow, that a big bucks walks into your sight today. if you are traveling take the extra time and do not speed the roads are ice covered in some areas.. get there safe and god bless all . if you are a service person thank you again for your service and have a great day. I was in Jan 1960 to Nov 1963 USAF, and sure did miss my Mom cooking but they do a great job at the mess hall as well.
  6. depends on the wind, also is there a good trees that will give you cover ? I like to put stand between 3 trees so I always had cover...I still would be off 50 to 60 yards and then try to give a grunt or a doe blet and see if you can get him to come to you..
  7. drugs will do it and or drink.....if I were to see one that has just 1/2 of the spikes on that uick it would be the last post as I am sure I would have the big one and pass away...
  8. I have up the road from me a camp that has brown is down from fawn to anything that walks is fair game. They come up from LI, have lots of there buddies go for doe permits in 40 and then since they are only going to hunt LI they sign the tags over to these guys. Then they have the balls to stop and say, gee not that many deer this year. I guess it takes all type I just hunt for a big buck and let any less than a 8 point walk. I do not any longer need the meat as it is only my wife and I at home. Also at 72 I need help to even get one in. My grandson has gotten deer the last two years and always drops off a pice of the meat for me.
  9. saw just one doe, my buddy on the next road over in 40 got a 7 point that was following 3 does'
  10. up and ready to go and it is 48 degree.
  11. I am up and getting ready, at 72 it takes a longer time, but still like a kid on xmas day. The weather will be good with the temps going from 40 to 50's today. So a lot of us will be sitting I am sure. I hope each gets the hunt of there dreams and be safe out there. If you put on deer drives please make sure of your target is not another hunter and do ware some orange, even if just a hat does help. I use the orange camo,
  12. I purchased 15 A's in North Pharsalia, built my retirement home on it, and across the road was 7500 A's of state hunting land. met all my needs till my wife wanted to get closer to the grandkids and we sold it. Now living near Oneonta NY and not a lot of land to hunt.
  13. they make a alum that is glued to the bh and then will and can be used in the Easton alum shaft. The BH and arrow looks like on from the early 60's. The photo and talk by the women who took the photo was on the NY news last night at 630 and sure now there are maybe 1,000,000 people who saw it and think less of us for the photo. Now it could as well all know could have been a great shot that hit a small tree and pushed the arrow to hit in the head.
  14. a great area to hunt, go in off of route 23 on One eye road, there is 7500 acres of land, lots of mixed hard wood and pine.. take the road to the end and turn into the state land and follow the road around, you will see on the left the old shooting range and a small pond. If you take the walk bridge across the spill way, lots of hard wood and great area for deer and turkey. if you go down the road another 1/2 mile you will come to a T in the road, as you look across you will see several open fields, if you go to the right and then take a sharp left and go maybe 200 yards down and park, walk up into the hard woods on the right and you will find several apple trees. I got a great 8 point there. If you just take a left at the t and dive mabe 300 yards up, you will find on the left another small area that has maybe 10 or more apple trees and the small clearing butts up to a large tract of pines. I got another great buck just sitting in the clearing and he walked out to feed on apples. as for pressure you will not see many other cars during the bow and or small game (bird hunter) but come gun the first week the roads are like NY city, with lots of hunters from down state . But most will not take a compass and walk in to get away from the herd. they just park and walk in maybe a 100 yards and sit . It sure does pay to scout ahead. if you need a hotel / motel then Norwich is 13 miles away and has a motel called the Norwich Inn and they get just $30 bucks for a night. there phone is 607 334 9935. I hope this helps Bill
  15. not a lot of movement in the early season, now that it is Nov the movement will get better and better so it better to be out there and not just sit at home and bitch. You can not hunt them from the easy chair.
  16. I tie a feather to my cable, to see wind movement.
  17. I guess at 72 a old fart like me, likes the idea that we take bucks that have 3 points on a side or more, let the little guys get bigger. I also would like the DEC to make it take only one buck a year, your choice of using crossbow, compound bow, traditional bow, shotgun, rifle were permitted and or black powder. But one buck only....
  18. works great on my hunting bows and also my 3D and spot bows. I had a bow shop for years and yes I had to have a drop a way ( DAW) rest at first and found them to be a pain to tune on some bows and like the WB as a kiss rest (keep it simple stupid ) I do find the WB rest can make more noise and yes it does reduce your bow speed by 2 or 3 fps. But it nothing to stop the positive points of this rest. Not like a DAW rest and the pull up strings gets broken going thru brush, you find the problem as a 8 point buck walks under your stand. Had a customer come in the shop and ask me to take that damp hot new DAW rest off his bow and put the old faith full back on the WB.
  19. up at 4 am most morning being retired and a old fart of 72 on Nov 5....I love the 5:45 am walk to the stand, then seeing the light start to come on, and then the first sign of daylight. It is 42 degrees here this morning and should start to get better and better, seeing more sign of ground scrape, and the fawns have been now kicked out my the adult doe's. I think the last week of Oct, will be the hot one for the bucks chasing the doe's and the doe's are still just getting ready...
  20. so now that the shutdown has ended and we are good for 3 months and the house now will meet with the senate on working out the difference of each budget. I sure hope we get some members who will try to do what is right for the country and not just for there own party. It sure reminds me of the kids in a sand box, I get my way and or I will screw up everybody. I hope people will look very hard on who they send to the senate or house and do they do the work for you and our country. I think a lot of them do not, most of them are very well off and sure seem to only want to get more $$$. I suggest all say a prayer for our country god bless the United States.
  21. a budget was sent from the senate to the house for the house to then identify a core group of house members to work with the senate to get a balanced budget..... the house did nothing... so the senate budget sits there and the house budget sits there, the house will not talk to the senate.... Obama does not create a budget it up to the house and senate to created there budgets and then work together to work out were there are issues.....
  22. I am sure that Obama and or his friends sat up all night to plan this operation. My God, this was just a glitch and yes some poor people took advantage of this and got things they should not have been able to have. Just like in the 60's with people breaking into stores to take things as the town burned . But the action should be to verify who got the items and have the police have them return all items. Does it always have to be Obama in the right wing mind. I am sure he now is planning on putting you on a list to take your bows and guns. Or maybe put your total family in a secret place, with no law to control what is done to you. Give us all a break, we are a country of law and should act as one. I see no way that the budget can be balanced till we start having both left and right talk to one another. I do not see that occurring tell the right wing get rid of the few crazy tea party members out there.
  23. seems a lot of you are find this on your own land or public hunting areas. But I do not see were any said they contacted the police for awareness and action...
  24. it may be wise to stop putting your hunting plans and location on facebook, those damm doe's must be reading them .....
  25. I can see both sides of the discussion. One side loves the old way of shooting all year to get better accuracy with the bow, learn all the wood craft he can, trys to see how close he can get to game prior to a kill shot, and scouts all year long to find the deer bedding and travel routes. Now the other side it sure seems that on the sportsmen channel if you see the shows the way is all the new things, you must have a food plots, you must have several of the cameras so you are looking at deer all year long via the cameras, you must have a new scope that tell you how far away the deer is so you can take a shot, plus do not hunt with a bow with just a string and nothing more like sights, peep, kisser, release, carbon arrows, and new type of closed in flight BH's...got to hunt out of tree stand or mfg blind. now for me a old fart of 71, I am both side of the coin, still love the traditional bow, but shoot a compound with peep, WB rest, carbon arrows, muzzy 3 blade fixed BH's, release and d-loop on the string. I still am shooting all year long, Why, at my age it has to be done to keep me so I can hunt. I also shoot 3D's both here and am a senior master in ASA in SC. I also am in the woods most of the year, looking to see how the deer have changed. The preseason scouting also lets me shoot stumps with wood arrows, blunts with my traditional bow .I do not or can not afford all the trail cameras or have my own land for food plots. I also hunt only from ground blinds that I use from natural down tree etc., no more tree stands due to age. so how do you handle the new hunters of the tect age, for me my goal always has to see how you can help and grow our sport. So if you see a new guy or now gal out there you old farts see how you can help them to grow are sport of hunting / archery. You may learn something from them as well.
