I am near the town of Oneonta in Delware county NY and so far have not found one that I could recommend for good service and reasonable cost. Do you have one to recommend ?

I called the DEC years ago and asked is there a report of areas that have had bear to cars accidents for the big woods area of upstate NY. I found thru research that by 3rd lake they had a lot of open land from a paper company that had bear problems. SO off I went with 3 other bow hunter to try to take a bear. We found a bar that had room to rent at a low cost, within a 1/2 hour drive of the area we wanted to try. I found number 1 thing to have with you was not your bow but a compass. Lots of big woods. We went back there for several years and had a great time and did see tracks and bear dropping but never a shot at a bear, The last time we were up, as we came out to our trucks, we found a single hunter walking the road , asking for help to get his bear out, we 4 went into the woods for about a 1/2 mile from the road and spent another 10 hours helping drag the bear out, and found we all said never again. A bear is not like a deer and you can not slide it, every little thing you hit you have to stop and lift it over. Now guys this was in the 80's prior to a lot of the hunter having a 4 wheel to get game out with. We also had one guy in the our group who felt he was a woodman and did not need a compass, at the end of the day hunting we would have to wait on him and who he was with as he could not find were he left his truck. good luck and let us know how you make out. you may at night get a 6 pack and go to the dump to see the bears,

The bucks like to be in a cool place were little activity except in there buck groups.

I set mine up at 25, 35 and 45 yards. I never had to go to a 2nd pin as would wait for deer to walking the 25 yard kill zone. By the way a research was done and the DEC years ago in the 80's and at that time 90% of deer taken with the bow was under 25 yards.

at 71 I now am down to about 58 lbs .

I see a lot of ad's for Savage rifle in the sportsman mags. Most bang for your buck so they tell you... I am still shooting a 303 brt from WWII, 1 bullet in the rifle and 4 in the clip. still takes down deer, woodchuck and or any other game. Cost new, at Ramsey outdoor store in NJ in 1957 was my whole saving from white mowing lawns for the summer of $27.95. At 71 I will keep it, I guess. Now were can I find ammo. got 200 rounds of army ammo, but just 20 rounds of hunting ammo.

JUST DO THE LAST INCH OF THE ARROW AND TIP. Or the arrow shaft will slip in your hands as you try to remove from the target. I SUGGEST using a bar of Ivory SOAP. I drill ahole thru the bar of soap and hang from my side quiver and also use when shooting at the 3D shoots. I also cut a 4 inch by 8 inch rag of the rubber material that is sold for putting your dishes on in a cabnet. It helps you grip the arrow shaft to pull the arrow from the targets...

I shoot Hoyt and have nothing but say a great hunting setup. So best of luck with your new bow and many fine deer to be taken with it.

I use the bag targets and they work well for target points. But for BH I never found anything that works very well in a block target. I use to have a small pile of sand and that worked the best for broad heads. I put the sand in a large cardboard box. I t was large enough to be safe to shoot at, so no misses and yet just pull the arrow out and just shake off the sand.

Over the years I have found when you gut and skin out a deer you lose 20% of the total body weight. and a 150 lb deer ready to be cut up that has a weight of 150 would have had a live weight of about 180 pounds. so the guts removed and hide off would be about 30 lbs.

I use to go to 3rd lake and also never saw a lot of bear sign and or bear. Till one weekend we got back to the truck and had a young guy asked for help getting a bear his buddy got out to his truck. Well 3 hours later, I said no more for me bear hunting. The bear seemed to get hung up on every twig in the forrest, as 4 guys tried to drag the bear out. I did ask the DEC for any reports of bear damage in the area and they had several in the 3rd lake area so that were we tried. I also suggest you do not leave your car or truck to go into the woods unless you have a compus with you. If you get lost it could be a long walk out.

NOt me at 71 I shoot 5 times or more a week. Maybe only 30 arrows at a time but from 25 yards out to 45 yards In 50 years + of hunting I still only had one killed over 30 yards and 98% of all shots were under 25 yards.

I suggest you get the state map for state hunting areas. I have hunted for years the area in the town of North Pharsalia NY, two different areas in the town both over 7000 acres each. I would go into the one that is off of route 23 on One eye road. No HA ha that the name. It has a mixed bag of pine, hard woods and several areas have a lot of old apple trees. I would not see a hunter in the bow season, most days, if I did it, it would be a bird hunter.

a lot of the trad archers swear on keeping to ALum or even wood as they feel the weight is key to taking large deer.
-
the slider sight I use can be moved with just one hand, but if preset as example to 25 yards and locked down I would first have to unlock the sight slider bar and that could be done with one hand. Then move the sight to the distance I wanted.

I am going to try for a month and just see how I do and I may then spend the $$$ to have a I/4 inch peep put into the string. The way they make the strings now it almost required you take the bow back to a bow shop with a bow press to get the strands open so you can put in a peep.

I have used for years and yes the need for a change with a single pin could cause you a concern, but in over 12 years it never has occurred for me, I preset to 25 yards and in the woods I hunt most times when you see the deer it is coming into the 25 yard range. I like that if I did setup on a woods / pasture funnel area I could if needed change the pin to a longer distance. I use hear a lot of guys say they used the wrong pin in that instance when they had to shoot fast.

Hi I just got a new 3D bow and was setting it up and put a d loop on the string, 2 brass nocks and a kisser button, I started shooting and I like the way I can seem to see more and it may be better for low light shooting. Does anyone else without a peep ? the kisser button keeps me to have the same head position so that my shots seem to be the same as looking thru a peep.

Yes you can spend 100 to 200 dollars for a pin sight or can consider to going to a slide sight. I went from a 4 pin sight to a slider sight and never looked back. I found due to the speed of these bows that pins were almost touching one to the other, and being the old fart I am ( 71) pins seemed to bleed together. I went to a slider sight with a fiber optic scope. I sighted in and marked the sight for 15,25,35,45, and 55 yards. I preset and leave on 25 yards when hunting. So far I never have had to adjust when hunting. But for the 3D and just shooting a field round it is the tops.

Down in SC it is a big problem, they now are considering having it open all year long and take as many as you can. If you own the land you can now hunt it year long, but the majority of state or federal land it is only open during special times, like during the deer season. But they are finding the amount of hogs taken is just about none, the guns start going off and the pigs no longer feed in there normal areas. The amount of damage they do is just major, if you got them in your lands the deer and turkey are just about killed off. The hogs will eat anything. I am a member of a bow club there in Myrtle beach SC, several of the local members have hogs on there farms and tell me it is just so much damage to the corps from them. Not like with deer or turkey, which they say has not been a problem. A doe will have 1 or 2 fawns, in a year. A pig will have several litters in a year, some one told me it could be up to like 20 in a year.

god that looks like right off of route 17. Maybe the beaverkill river.

In central NY we have had over 10 + days of rain and more rain, flood warning for most days. Lots of camps have lost there driveways and or the camps if close to streams are having major issue. The fishing is not well with the high water as well. I would also think that the turkey has lost most of the young birds due to the cold wet weather.

at 71 years young and married for 48 years I have to say thank god for a wife that new from day 1 that I was crazy about hunting and fishing. She over the years has been nothing but supportive. I also shot for a lot of years almost every Sunday from April thru August each year with archery, NFAA, or ASA or IBO. I also belong to several clubs as well. So if you have a wife that support your hunting etc, take the time prior to the season to take her out to dinner as a thank you. My hunting buddy and I use to do that for years, in September take them out to a fine dinner and again say thanks for all the supports in our man things. I lost my buddy G Gardner several years ago so the hunting has not been the same, we use to take all of September to do our early scouting and placement of tree stands etc, we also use to keep a book at the camp ( named Outdoors forever of South Oselic NY ) of were we found sign or found deer as we hunted or scouted. During all the years I new we were crazy but also we seemed to get good bucks each year and the fun with these hunts will live in my heart always.
