  1. up and ready to try for a few hours this morning. Looks just about right for the wind and also the temp are in the low 40's...
  2. I like the Oct 31 thru the next 9 days as the period when the bucks are ready but the doe's are not ( the chase period ) I start being in the woods for longer periods at this time.
  3. I saw another mom doe and two fawn yesterday morning as I went out to walk to the ground blind, but nothing after the sun came up, just to warm I think for a lot of movement. They are calling for a cool down next week.
  4. lots of state land around North PHarsalia NY that is about a 1 1/2 hour from your location. But again lots of hard woods, pine, old apple trees and not a person to see in the bow season. Find one acre and purchase it and have 15,000 acres to hunt.
  5. I had a great afternoon, bright sunshine, temps in the low 70's, I also saw for the first time a lot of deer, I had 3 mom doe's walk by the ground blind with a total of 6 fawns. Also saw one turkey. It was just great being out there with the smell of fall in the air, lots of apple on wood trees, they smell so sweet, the bee's were out on the apples. I have seem the mom doe's most of the year, but never saw they all together, they were hitting the apples hard. One fawns came so close I thought I could pet her with my hand. Now I sure wish a big buck would walk by like these 9...
  6. good luck to all up and ready to go at 530 am... Bill
  7. I can not think back that far from current 71 to back at 16. I just could not wait to get a car and have the ability to drive. I came from a large family that always had great time so dinner could be anything from beef to even Lamb, but the one thing I always enjoyed was the fact that my Dad and Mom was always there for me. So tell them what you would like to have at your party. I was given my first Bear traditional recurve that was in hunting weight of 45 lbs and a doz of wood hunting arrows from Herter's a a gift. I also was allowed to go to the hunting camp with my Dad and his hunting buddies. have a great birthday Bill
  8. Hell it might be more fun to just put them in the bathing trunks and swim a few laps.... all kidding aside I just use a large Walmart plastic tote, put pine in the bottom and them cover with a hand cut piece of camo burlap material. Keep the togs separate from the pine, but they do have a niece smell of pine on them. One other tip is to use 4 oz of apple juice in the final cycle of your wash, then hang out to air dry. Gives a faint odor of apple. great if you are hunting in old apple tree area... Please make sure its only 4 oz, one guy poured the whole bottle 32 oz in and then said it was my fault that he could not stay in his tree stand because of bee's after him...
  9. I am 40 lbs + overweight and am walking the mile a day now and will also increase to get to a hour a day....plus at 71 , I find I still eat like I was at 21 and working 12 hour days. now most of the time it TV and popcorn or other treats. So no more in between food, and cut back on the amount I take at a meal. I do find at my current weight I do seem to do better walking down the mountain, and or rolling down...
  10. d me for the first time not hunting last year, it took 10 months to find what was the cause and less than a month to put me on track to be my old (71), fat, bald old fart that still loves to hunt. I have shoot the bow 3 to 4 times a week, I am ready. My goal is just to be out there and if possible to take a buck.
  11. We have had two light frost and the apples are on the ground. But I think the mast is on like red acorns or white acorns. I did see a light scrape on the edge of a pasture, but not seeing any rubs in the area.
  12. I was once stopped by the DEC shooting stumps prior to the opening of the archery season. I was on my own land, and they saw me from the road, stopped and walked over and asked to see my licence, which of course I did not have on my person as I was in shorts and a t-shirt. I asked them to walk over to the house and showed them my licence, which is a life one and at that time I had to buy the archery stamp which I had. So they wanted to see the arrows in my side quiver and all were with judo blunts. So they said they were ok to use, but no hunting deer points allowed in the woods.
  13. at 71 years young a phone to be is in the house. By wife is concerned when I go hunting or fishing that I should now have a cell phone to take with me. Do they make a cell phone that is easy to use , read , and that you could pay one yearly fee, as I would only see using it, if I had a health issue, or if I shot a deer, needed help from the grandson or son in law to get it out of the woods, or maybe car trouble. so maybe 20 calls a year at the most and or maybe none...
  14. Welcome, from a little North of you from a old fart that still loves to hunt...grew up and went to school in Paramus NJ and then into air force. Never went back to NJ, my last base was Stewart AFB in NY state....
  15. got the bow back, $20 cost to have a tru peep put in and the draw module they could not get to go in, so they said. Got home and had the wife call the bow mfg, they gave me a return number and said it would be a easy correction, they would check out the total bow, setup to my requirements and no charge. the bow is a Alpine 3D bow model, 40 inches long, set up as 29 inch draw, and 50 to 60 lbs. Shipped the bow back. Alpine could not do enough to help.
  16. I have found over the years that the last week of Oct and First week of November is when I start seeing sure signs of the rut, the bucks are ready but the doe's are not ,This is what is called the chase period. A lots of the bucks just never stop walking to find that first doe that ready. The 2nd week and 3rd week of November is when the breeding start to take place. A lot of time you will find the buck and doe together.
  17. On Friday it will be 14 days since I took a new bow in ( Oneonta bow shop ) to have a tru peep installed and 1 screw put in on the draw length module on the top limb. Lost the screw while shooting the bow sight in. Of course it fell out in the grass, no a chance in 1 to 1000,000 to find the screw. Planning to stop in on Friday night to see what the problem is.
  18. nothing like a auto I got two 1100 Remington and would never go back to a pump for birds or even white or brown rabbits...
  19. Just was on archery talk and they are having a discussion on bow cases for air travel, it seems that most want a double bow case that if you are traveling to a hunt or a shoot you had better have a backup bow. they recommend SKB or Aurora brands and the model are 5114, or 5214 and or the 50 inch model in the SKB. Aurora they love as it has wheels for easy travel in airport or even on the range and hold two bows, airs, quiver, and releases, plus space for a tool kit...
  20. that a hard question if you want alum (SWS) that works for air planes you are talking about $150 plus for used....archery talk.com is a good place to look for cases. You also had better understand how big a case you will require. I got a great case for just under $80 but it is a soft case. I have a plano that is the hard plastic that is for airplane as well, but it sure is heavy and not a easy transport. I had it when I had a truck and a open bed, just would toss the total case in back and it held the bow, quiver, arrows and release for hunting. Last year Dicks and Walmart both had them for sale and under $75.
  21. speed means nothing, try several bows and the one that feels great in your hand is the one to buy. It also may not be the top one in the brand. I find the cast riser Hoyt is one of the best around for being a good hunting bow at a price in the $600 range., and also is the Mathews $500 hunting bow, this one also has lots of draw length and draw weight adjustments so it is a bow that can grow with the younger archers.
