  1. He is asking for the one that is close to Monroe NY, right off the truway. Always a lot of deer sign in the area, but not a lot of bears being taken. Best is call the local DEC agent to see how many or if any bear were taken. If you are just looking for public land to hunt and you do not mind spending for a motel, check out the area near Norwich NY and the area is in North Pharsalia NY ( 7M), this is about 20 minute west of Norwich on route 23...7500 acreas of state land, lots of mixed hard wood and pine, rolling hills and lots of old apple trees. WIthin a 1/2 hour of this land there is two other pieces that have 7000 to 10, 000 acreas ...
  2. But most that hunted for food, did so with a dog and hunted rabbits...they sure still taste good in the stew pot. That what got me into hunting with my Dad and his friends...in the late 50's there was not a lot of deer in NY. My Dad and his 4 buddies wouod go to deer camp for a week and if that got a deer it was a great day. I use to go to help open up the camp and hunt the weekend for rabbits and then on Sunday afternoon would have to take a bus from Liberty Ny to Paramus NJ....I could not wait till I was old enough to be there for thge week with them. Esch had his own special stump or rock....lots of places had names from past yearw were a buck was taken. It was a general surprise when they opened up doe season with only 3 people had to be on a tag to get one...My first hunting season for deer was 1963, and I was one of the lucky ones, had my first rifle a 303 british enfield from WWII, with flip up iron sight to shoot up to 1000 yards, or leave it down for up to 150 yards...it was almost 5 pm, after sitting all day and a deer came out of the swamp and I could see horn, lots of horns, I put the 303 right agaist a big maple tree and just like Uncle Sam showed me to squeeze that trigger. The gun when off and the deer started running, and then I heard the deer crash down. MY Dad was down the ridge from me and he came running as well as two of the other guys. The showed me how to gut the deer and all draped it back to the farm. That was a lot of years ago and many deer, but still was the best day for me in the woods ( ever ) It has to be family and friends to get the hunting numbers up...so this year take a kid hunting, maybe only after rabbits or other small game, or take him or her while you scout for deer or make a ground blind... Over the years with the bow shop I have gotten over 60+ new hunter into our sport of hunting. It never was a problem for me to take a few hours off and take a kid with me either hunting or fishing.
  3. love apple trees, just no apples by me this year. Does not mean the deer do not spot on the way to the field or from the fields to the bedding area...always sign in the area...
  4. Had one hunter after the first day, got 1`/2 way home from Norwich area to Vestal and pulled in to have coffee and guess what was lsot.. He had put his bow on top of the cab of the truck and forgot to put it in the cab as he pulled out to go home. He turned around and found the bow in good shape about 50 yards fromn his hunting spot on the dirt road... now that luck...if had been me I would have lost it on route 88 and tractor trailer would have hit it... I use a back pack so my extra release is always in the bag, as well as a buck hunter knief, and a drag rope. Also a flashlight, scent spray away bottle, a small fm radio for those mid day times with ear plug...I just refletched two doz arrow yesterday so that are all ready to go...
  5. well my bowclub in Manassas VA in the 80's use to have in Sept each year a sportman day, hotdogs for .25 cents and drinks were about the same at that time. We would post in the local paper, bring the wife, kids and the man of the house out to see different type of hunting sports, we even had the local police show off shooting with hand guns, black powder, and trap all were available the the location. The archery we had several kids bows, with wood arrows to show them they could become WIllaim Tell or Robin Hood. Also the compound were just starting to come out, so we had several of the club archers there to show off shooting skills and answer questions on the NFAA and also hunting with the bow. On the average we got about 30 new members of Cub Run (I Walton ) club. We also use to have a sale of used equiptment that day. The day started off with the South local arm unit with colors flying marching on to the rifle , hand gun range to shoot match against the local police, archers, each had 3 man teams. A taget was put on 4 x 4 plywood for the local police and Black powder. The archers had two bales of hay. All targets were clay birds hung on nails a total of 5 birds for each group at 20 yards. It was shoot as many times as you want in two minutes for each member of the team. The archers each year would win. But it was the fun. Then the black powder would have a special shooting of the total group, 35 men shooting off at one time to show the people what it was like in the civil war. The smoke would hang low. Then some of the great wing shots would show shooting of clay birds. It was a great day for all. But I guess with today laws, and sue happy public this could not be done.
  6. well when I had the bow shop each year I was working to get several new archers in the sport of ours. Now last year with the shop closed I still was able to get 3 new archers started. I see so many boys were it now the single mom trying to raise the child.I think the best thing that can occur is the archery in the schools program. It sure helps get both boys and girls started. some may hunt but all will have a understanding of the archery 3D / target sport of ours. I am sure some will then find there way into hunting.
  7. thanks to all, will see the doctor next week to find oot thr rehab and schedule. may be able to hunt the late bow and maybe the 2nd week ofd gun...
  8. typing this with one hand, spent 7 hours in the hospital. I had a accident and was concerned had broken my wrist. turns out, they say may take up to 3 months and then after rehab may start drawing a bow. based on this sure wish they had allowed a cross bow season, would have gone from the hosiptal to Dick's to buy a xbow....
  9. go to a local bow shop and get fitted for a bow outfit. If they have a indoor range plan on shooting it over the winter. Next year with snow out, find a local archery club to join. Start by practice close under 20 yards, then as you gain skill shoot longer yardage. ALso focus on form, and do not shoot over 20 arrows at a time to get over tired and start to get bad habits. MOst deer taken on 25 yards and under. so it great to hit a target at 60 yards, but most of our shots in NY are under 30 yards. Also go to the 3D shoots and you will enjoy shooting with the buddy you will make as well as showing off the skills you have learned...
  10. My first gun was purchased in 1956 at Ramsey outdoor store in Paramus NJ...I paid a total amount of $24.95 for a 303 call WWII leftover, had never made it over to EWNgland, was made here in the good old USA in CA. I also purchase for $16.95 a 100 rounds of ammo that was the WWII ammo, was great for target shooting and sightin in my first scope for the rifle a few years later. Still have the gun it took my first buck in NY with it and several others till I got my 742 remington 308 cal woodmater in 1966...
  11. I been shooting 24 arrows each morning at about 630 am, while it is kool. The bow and backup bow is sighted in and if I miss it because of me and not the bow. I have 3 doctors appointments this coming week to see what is next for me with health issue. I am hoping I will not need any operations and additional tests. I love the idea of Oct 1, the deer still are in there normal feeding and the weather we have had means the farmer will not yet be cutting the corn, the rain showers we have had may give them about a month more in growing so they get a better % of there corp. If you farm am I correct in the corn analysis. I am planning on the end of next week to check out some of the ground blinds I have in back of the house to see the level of activity.
  12. thanks all I am shooting a compound at 60 lbs each day and am thinking as I get older and or NY goes to crossbow in the bow season to at that time to get one as a backup to my currrent bow. I sure think I would love to try one for the coyotes in our area. thanks for the tips on a rope and it ease of use. I look in archery talk for the wicked ride crossbow line and they sure do seem to have a middle of the road with high reviews of there quality and a good price on there products...
  13. I see most of the cross bow have a peak weight of 150 lbs, 165 lbs or 180 lbs.... can you tell me how hard is it to draw and cock a cross bow with a rope drawing tool or do you have to order a model with the internal drawing feature ? the 2nd stupid question is I have some 2219 and 2412 arrows that are new and full length if I cut them down to what ever the bolt is on a compound bow that I purchase, could these be used. Is there a easton chart on bolt, also there seems to be different nocks on some of the bolts, what are the different ? Is there in the Oneonta area a bow shop that has some cross bows that you would recommend so I could try them out. I am 70 years young and sure do not want to buy one and find I can not use it. I have a buddy in PA, purchased the highest priced PSE cross bow, over $1000 + dollars and the thing is a piece of junk.
  14. Over the years I have had several . Easton arrow said for this feat to occur you could do and they had a list of 50 things a archer may do that would get you a robin hood, some of the itmes were good form, or a badform and if you get the right things occuring both good and bad then a robin hood would occur.. .but they also said in small print the average was over 50,000 shots to have one....so do not plan on another one next week.. But you now have the first one, I kept my robin hood arrows in the archery shop on the wall. You now are robin hood pro.....keep shooting
  15. put in for 40 or 7M and got nothing again...
  16. HI from a past member of Orange county ( town of Walden ) , lots of good bird and deer areas. I now am in the Oneonta area, and have some deer, lots of yotes, and very little birds...
  17. Had a great buddy Gerry Gardner of Johnson city NY, we camped out for the first week of gun season. He had made a pull tram with two bike frames. It packed two tents, a stove for what befcame the cook tent, two ground covers for uner the tents, 2 5 gal water jugs, two bows, two guns and about 4 sets of hunting togs for each of us, as well as a full 1 1/2 of food supply. I was the horse to pull the thing with Gerry being the learder. It worked just fine, up hill he would have to get in back and help push me up the hill. We went about 3 miles off a major NY highway. One of the best hunts ever for me. Nothing like cooking a full deer leg in a slow cook setup, with fresh carrots, mushrooms, and let it cook all day while you hunted and then come back at night, and have dinner with a cold beer and look at the stars. It did take me a full two days to get so I was warm in the sleeping bag, I found I had at first to many togs on in the sleeping bag. I found it was better to be just in my underware. Over the year we had lots of hunts, some from our camp in South Osetlic ( Outdoor forever ), to shooting in lots of NFAA shoots. I sure miss my hunting buddy who was taken to early with cancer. Gerry Gardner was a Lt of firemen in Johnson city. god bless him
  18. all the to brands of BH are great, I usethe fixed blade by Muzzy. I do not use the lighted nocks, seem a high cost. I do use light color fletch as orange and yellow to help find a arrow on a pass thru of the deer.
  19. we got about 2 inches of arain in the Oneonta area. It sure rain very hard for short periods and then was normal rain. I would think you are ok, unless on a side hill...
  20. May you take a lot of big bucks with the new bow and also be the king of the 3D course with that bow in your hand.
  21. seems strange that there is a issue, as the owner of a business, he said his faith was that marrage is between a man and women. that is his right. He did not say he would not hire, or allow gays to eat or work at his place of business.
  22. you may have to make slight adjustment to your sight and also the rest due to the smaller od size of the arrow. they are a great arrow, I also shoot the bemen brand that is now owner by Easton.
  23. I know in the dark of night these left wingers are now jsut looking at this email site and your names our on the list. They will be there within 48 hours to take your guns and ammo. I am sure Obma is making out a list list and checking it twice, prior being released to the FBI for action. That has to be on the top of his list, not to strive to get the over 8% that are looking for job back to work... come on guys it does not say that you can not buy over a 1000 rounds but does say hey maybe it a good idea to see what is being purchased and by who. I sure think that if I say Mr A, had purcahsed over 1000 rounds from several on line dealers and all were the same cal, for a total amount purchase say 3000 rounds, maybe it may be wise to have the local cops or state cops just make a call and ask what are you doing with all that ammo ? We have laws in effect to monitor how much of certern drugs you can buy even if they are over the counter type but mixed with other chemicals make other chemicals / drugs that are not allowed by law...
  24. at 70 years yopung I now draw and hold a 60 lb compound and a 50 lb recurve. I use to have the compound b ows all set at 70 lb, then came rotocuff repair about a doz years ago and never got back over 60 lbs. I found that the arrow still goes right thru a deer. I also found that a recurve trad bow at 45 to 49 lbs you can hold better and not have as many faults in shooting when you control the bow and the bow does not control you. I use carbon arrows and 100 gr points on the arrows...for the compound and 125 gr points on the trad arrows.
  25. Why is this a issue of right wing vs left wing. Sure seems like a reasonable requirement, why would a normal god fearing hunter be buying over a 1000 rounds at a time. If you are buying for a total of a gun club, maybe, but they are saying ou still could buy but just notify to verify why you have a need for 1000 + rounds...with the cost of BOX OF 308 CAL hunting shells I sure the most I ever purchased at one time was 3 boxs of 20 shells per box. as a hunter I support this change to our laws.
