its hard to say, even tho there are good food sources in your area with nutrition you never do know what that paticular deer has been feeding on. i would think that just because a deer has access to good nutrition doesnt really mean that he would eat it. you also dont know if it really is the oposite in which the deer has been eating good enough to put weight on but does have crappy gentics. im sure anything is possible. how big were his spikes??

i think eventually there will be a change perhaps a new structure that has never been practiced in NY. what that may be and when, i have no idea. but i do not think a change is necisarelly a bad thing and i support what ever the DEC/DNR implement... i do believe that NY has areas that can compete with deer being harvested out west inwhich antler size and matority of an animal is similar... i do not think it is critical to have a state where big big deer are of the norm and i do not for see that happening here anytime soon (state wide). does anyone here think that if a structure was implemented here in NY to target growth of bigger deer that the state would do so as a level of extra income of the sort?? like how hunters across the east coast will travel and spend money on these farms in , iowa, ohio, kansas and so on? i am just curious to see if anyone here thinks that maybe a reason to do somthing like this would be for a added income source to the state?? oh and also does one think if NY was to ever grow deer like out west that this would intise more future hunters?? just asking...

ive noticed that too, theres dead calm days when i go outside during break but that luck doesnt seem to follow me in thw woods... it has been crazy windy, one of the windiest season i can remember. ill take alittle wind, i cant take the warmer weather for deer season... -
great story! i like the character of that deer, he does have nice mass! its always a good feeling when a hunt like that unfolds for you and its funny how things work out even inspite of the ATV in which you thought ruined your hunt. congrats!

temps over here are going down! mid 50s right now, supposed to go mid 40s tonight. mid 50s are the high for sat and sunday by us... waaayyy better then 70. lets go cold weather! -
i had an apt where in the dead of winter id have to open a window or too for a bit, especially if i was cooking... got really hot, it was nice and cozy most of the time. when i bought my house i installed a pellet stove so we run that in the winter. anyways, bring on the cold weather!!

I would do anything I could within reason to find it. Would I spend god knows how much to rent a helicopter to find it? I doubt it. If we start looking for dead or wounded animals with aircraft, it won't be long before they start looking for live ones in the same way. well supposedly down in texas they do have to turn in live cir-valence for deer herds in order to be issued tags to practice QDM dont they?? i know they do helicopter surveys downthere... but i hear what your sayin..

beautiful buck! those beams are thick. looks like he broke part of his rack off on the left side of the main beam? -
this is very true... very unfortunate...

man these are some funny stories... the nerve of some trespassers!

i slipped into an area late upstate and stupid me setup right on a main deer run a few years ago. it was on the thicker side below me and i sat off of a run that leads out of the thickets. well sure enough right before shooting time i saw down into the thickets a tree swaying around, upon closer inspection i see a really nice rack working through. sure enough the deer commits to a structure that lead him right to the run i was on and he pops out dead on 15 yards infront of me. it was a beautiful 7 point with a 17-18" spread. nice buck... well he knew i wasnt part of the surrounding and busted me instantly! he ran down into the thickets and up the ridge i hot the can 2 times he stopped dead in his tracks and came back down the ridge, the second it looked like he was smelling the air and looked like he was going to walk off, i git him again with the can 1 more time. he commits and comes right back to me off of another trail grunting up a storm. needless to say i had him going crazy for about 15 minutes maybe even 20 with this can. each time he came in to about 20 yards and ran off and each time i hit with some bleets. He would come right back in but never did offer a shot op for me. it was just one of the coolest experiences i had with a deer to know i had this deers attention so bad he would keep coming back to me as if he had a name and i knew it... never did see him again. i did have experiences where i used the can on a buck and got zero reaction, my guess is that deer may had his mind set on a hot does trail. i have had bucks who were mind set on something else and even me jumping in a tree while he was walking by wouldnt get his attention...

that is a nice buck!
