When did it become normal not to keep supplies at home ?
Nomad replied to Nomad's topic in General Chit Chat
Correct ! We can run to,Costco and stock up for a month in an hour ! Also each of my parents worked full time on their feet all day I might add , Dad used his vacation time to plant , us kids were the harvesters . Can’t plant and can ? to busy with yoga class ,FB posts , and the Bachelor after work ? So as my Granddad would say “ for the love of Christ “ , build some shelves and GO to BJs . As we said when making dinner at the firehouse, “ I’d rather be looking at it , then looking for it !” Buy it cheap and stack it deep ! -

Sorry I couldn’t find the “ price gouging “ thread aka 17,000 hand sanitizers . But this largely reflects my feelings on that . Although I feel CMAC charging 24 times what I can buy a Genny beer for at the store , a bit much . So I don’t , free market . $12 a beer there , 30 pack for $15 at the store. But I digress..... https://www.aier.org/article/three-undeniable-problems-with-anti-gouging-laws/ -

“. If it hasn't gotten real for you yet...... Stores are working on plans for 10 people in at a time to shop. Think about the chaos that this would cause. “ So 20 or so, people an hour at Wegmans ? Can’t see that ever happening. -
Growing up my parents and grandparents ( who lived nextdoor ) each had a room in the basement ,they called the fruit cellar , nothing but shelves of food . We had a garden in the lot we owned next to the house , the lot was 150 x 70 and the garden was 90% of that, corn, tomato’s , strawberries, carrots, beans ,lettuce and so on . We had apple, pear and a cherry trees too . Mom canned and froze fruit and vegetables that lasted through the winter , she also bought food on sale in mass quantities and rotated the stock , Dad put an occasional deer into the large chest freezer . Yes they each also worked full time jobs . Many of my friends basements looked similar, no garden ? They bought from farm stands to can . Today, If one has a fair amount of food in the basement folks snicker and make prepper comments , you know the same ones going from store to store trying to find what they eat .

Send them to my daughters town , deer are a true nuisance, I know one guy who killed 23 doe in one bow season in the town hunt . This is today behind her house, same as any other day . They would probably get an award from the town .

The supply chain works under normal circumstances. But now you have folks preparing for being home a month or two, their kids won’t be eating at school , the parents won’t be eating out at work , no eating out at nights , so buy more food for home . Plus they’re worried so they buy one or two months of food, not one or two weeks . In a week or two perhaps it slows down. -

One issue I believe is , that stores typically have three days of food on hand . Most shop once a week or every two weeks and the store can easily restock , and those folks have one or two weeks of food at most at home . Now they go as often as possible and buy a months worth of some things each time they find it . This makes it hard for those who can’t get to the store everyday to run in and get what they need when they may have a chance . It may be a good lesson , for those that don’t keep a supply of consumables at home . -

Male relative ,early 40s, said he shot a gun one time , that was with , me so long ago I don’t recall . He just bought an AR ,I gave him a run down on the four rules and it’s nomenclature, we’ll get out for practice soon . I might have suggested a Ruger PC carbine or short barrel shotgun , rather then having him mess with top loading , which he didn’t even know how to do . But he’s very skilled with his hands, should learn this tool fairly fast . -
For me ten. I’m a 9 1/2 and wear ten in boots , you just reach 9 1/2 with heavy socks , so I think 10 would work . I’ve never gone up any higher so can’t comment on that . You really need to try the boots on to see .

Crappy , just left my nephews shop , he’s a school teacher and a “ hardscaper .” He started out working summers helping a guy do brick paver walks , and by the second summer was working for himself . Today he’s about the most sought after guy around . Teaches during the day, does side gig 4Pm -10pm and of course all day summers . Now that school is closed he’ll be working 7am -10 pm plus weekends just to keep up, with demand He can’t wait to hit twenty years and retire to do just the hardscapes , the amount of equipment he owns the ten acres his shop is on , booked a year out ,he’s killing it, teaching is almost his second job and certainly the lessor paying one . -

My question as to the no groups of 500 and above and half the established occupancy for under 500 is who’s going to enforce this ? And what’s the penalty , as usual the “ news” leaves one with more questions then answers . The local FD sets occupancy for public assembly’s , so we enforce that , at nights when time permits a BC will enter a bar and check the bouncers counter . Occasionally someone will call in overcrowding. A bar in a popular area may get checked a couple times a month ,maybe . But this new “ rule “ seems to be a health dept thing , and the FD does not enforce health codes . Is the health dept going to, put guys on nights ? I guarantee they don’t have the manpower to do many checks . My experience last night of two bars and one restaurant, is it was business as usual, the restaurant was packed with wall the bar people and all tables filled , one bar was packed the other which was Not but it’s very very large and it was early yet . -

Ya the other day while doing cpr on an OD two,of my former guys got vomit sprayed in their mouths fortunately the guys blood came back clean, although they were started on the “ magic cocktail “ of drugs right away and taken off duty , sometimes you get spit on ,blood is flying , you get sneezed on , puked on , you name the body fluid and it’s going to get on you . Masks , safety glasses , gloves are all needed bsi on all ems calls . Not just this thing, TB, hep b ,aids the everyday things they deal with . these guys are face to face with sick folks ,there’s no social distancing, you’re at bad breath distance . -

Ran into a couple FF at the gym, the dept finally came out with a SOG, for this ,part of which is each FF is to keep a bag with clothes any meds they take and so forth on the rig ,Incase they go, right into quarantine . The troubling part is they’re low on N95 masks , and their not allowed to wear them during overhaul . That is when the fire is out and walls and ceilings are opened , burned items are removed , dirty and dusty a time you really want to wear it . You used to wear it ,toss it and grab another out of the supply room at the firehouse . Now they want you to, overhaul On air , that is with scba and facepiece on , that’s going to suck . -
I’ll just grab a few rolls out of the bathroom there , like when I leave the gym each day .
