Awesome. ! Glad I found this thread. I'm 56 in my younger days I canoed in places such as the Yukon, BC, as well as closer by in Ontario and Quebec. Lately ive thought about going to a remote river again , my canoeing / hunting partner lives in Seatlle so it's a short hop to Ak ,BC and the Yukon. You've inspired me, thanks for posting and keep doing so !!!

Hey some guys and pick and chose what work they take. Friend used to roof on the side , no city houses, only walkable ones, and only did tear offs not go overs. Had more work than he could ever do .

Most here are passionate about bow hunting and the way they do it , don't sweat it. Myself I have no trouble killing deer in Bow including my first year in the late '80's when I had zero idea how to bow hunt, did not pay attention to the wind, scent control and so on, one stand which I used every time I went. Killed a buck out of it. I put practicing out of a stand way ahead of off a roof. On a roof your foot placement is wide like on the ground, there is no trunk to get it the way of your arm if you try to turn, no harness to deal with, you don't learn if the stand makes noise if you move in it etc. Yes try to have all the work done way ahead of the time, but slipping in and shooting a few arrows is not a big deal to,me. Sure try to be scent free as you can . It's no different then hunting out of it other then a few shots, something I do,out of each stand each time I hunt it. I always shoot two field points out of my stand, I find it a great confidence builder to,know I can hit that stick or spot on the trail from my stand.
-
Myself I would not worry about it. The confidence you get from shooting out of your stand will be worth it. I still have to cut two trails to two stands, walk all the property checking , replacing, trimming posted signs. I've moved plenty of stands during the bow season with good results . Good luck shooting !

It was in my parents yard on Lake road in Webster near Bay road. Dad said his back outside motion light kept going off .... We Found some really big " deer tracks" in his garden that was a little weird I'll tell you !!!! It was later spotted bedded down in a backyard / field two houses away . I would only be guessing on how long ago that was, but it was on the news.

I've shot a pile of deer on drives. But now that we're "managed" that's out on the farm . We always had the watchers 1/2 mile or more from the drivers . You post up where the deer are going to generally for us across a large field to the next patch of cover. By the time they get there they often stop and stare before committing to entering it, that makes it easy to drop 1,2 . We had exact trees and bushes they run to every time . " you stay behind this bush and don't move, they'll pop,out of that little dip in the field" I miss that .

I agree First-Light , it has seemed to have faded from somes memories . Each year I watch the History Channels 911 shows with a tall glass of whiskey and reflect. I recommend Mirricle of Stairway B and 102 Minutes That Changed America . Here's a shot of my crew and I at RPD Swat teams , 911 charity workout that they did at The Strathallen .

What will cause you to drop a dime on another hunter?

Jjb4900, no worries . Where I work everyone lies and says he's got a gun for that very reason , they know it'll have cops drop low priority calls to respond to a hot one faster . I did not do that. But when they ask is he still there saying " I think so please hurry" instead of " I don't know" and " he's pounding hard I think he's trying to get in" instead of " he's knocking loud" are true statements . People in general have a misconception of what a 911 call will do. Today I had a Mva blocking a busy city street, I called for the cops 2x ,20 minutes later dispatch told me a car was finally assigned a few minutes later he showed up. One of the drivers involved was all proud he had a camera on his windshield , and handed the cop the chip. " here I got it all on this you can download it!" Cop said " ya I don't want that"....... Years ago I lost $90 and a cc to theft at the ymca , I knew who did it , on a hunch I went across the street to Walmart . The bell ringer said they just left, I was armed with a .38snub hot on their tail ,could ID them. The Monroe County Sheriffs showed up and hour and a half later ........ -
Well I got his Dad .

I like weird racks. He'd be dead if he passed by me .

Calling in crimes or whatever , the police response ( if any) will depend on many things, where, when , what it is your calling in. We routinely stage for the police on shootings , stabbings, domestics where someone is burning the others clothes or threating to burn the house down. It's not unusual for that wait to be many many minutes after we are on scene . These are high priority calls too! Car accidents can be over 30 minutes , heck I've had patients leave in the ambulance , and the drivers get tired of waiting for the cops and drive away . Works for me . My daughters roommate called in unknown man banging on the door and not saying anything or leaving , it took Buffalo pd and hour and a half to respond . I could have drove from Rochester faster. I since coached her on what to say to get a faster response . Low level calls are often ignored all together as it'll be " holding " for hours before a car can take it . -
Worked well for the wife and I ! Although her company where she's got over 30 years is moving to Mexico ( I got her the Spanish Rosetta Stone, sunscreen and a case of water..... ). Kinda hard to move the Fire Dept to Mexico . What sold me on the FD was the work schedule , families hate it because of working nights , week ends and Holidays , but it works great for hunting !

I've killed a pile of deer with my BPS buck special over about twenty years time ! When we went rifle a couple years back I bought a Savage .270, that is what I'll take " tomorrow ".
-
They all work well for the people who sell them. I've had them work and not so,much. Young bucks come to the "can" like they are on a string. Most of my stands are in thick cover if I can see a deer I can shoot it for,the most part, so all my calling there would be blind calling and its burned me most times ok every time . I bring a grunt tube and can, but hardly use them anymore. I do,less and less rattling and calling. My experience has been the big ones will circle downwind , stay in cover and watch , after ten minutes or so I'll move or make a noise and a buck I never saw will run off. Maybe I just suck at it , and that might be true as well.
-
Thank you ! Most states allow it now. NY once again must know something all those states don't , the thought I guess is you'll shoot a deer with it , if I was a poacher it would be with my .270 not a pocket .380 or short barrel 9. Heck I group better with my bow at 30 yards than my handguns anyway.
-
I might have to say my SW 586 , 4 inch .357 . I hardly carry it outside of gun season don't shoot it often, but when it do I just drill the target . That puts a smile on my face !
-
Ok today it was hot and thick ! Our oldest asked if I wanted to go to paddle boarding , so after the gym we did and hour an a half paddle boarding behind the bay. She's out of the house and working at Strong as a RN, so,it was nice surprise when she asked me to go! I was drenched and sunburned came home and the guy across the street was raking his leaves !!

Two officers hunt the farm and a third lives nearby , I generally meet with that one each year or at least email him. We exchange info on what's going on in the area. They have been very good to us, switching work hours to nights when we report single shots at 2 AM Setting up the robo deer and the like . Poachers and trespassers are my big thing. When you grow big bucks and you have miles of fields open to the roads you'll get poachers . Trespassers has been much easier to control although a couple years back we had two really bold ones on my small slice of the farm on opening day no less. They were kids and us adults explained things to them, along with taking pics of them and their truck..... -
Talk to him first . I'd tell him I saw the salt lick and what's up with that ? we don't hunt like that around here, and it's so close to my property I could get in trouble by hunting to close to it . I hope it's just out by your camera for pics ( giving him an out) . Then keep a close eye on him. If your first move is to call the cops well expect the same when your kid drives to fast down the street , or you play your music a bit loud, build a shed or pool deck without a permit, you dog barks, grass is to high , camper is parked to long in your yard, maybe you like to have a camp fire some nights hope it meets all the code requirements because he'll be calling .even if you're right in everything you do he'll still call and the cops / code enforcement will respond. We have friends who's neighbor called on them dozens of time. When they cut the grass he'd call the Sheriff because the clippings crossed the property line...... Talk to him, watch him , you'll know after a season how he rolls.
