I've checked with several EOC...and any scent attractant over 1 1/2 liquid/fluid ounces is illegal here in NY So here's the tip a ECO gave me....when taking a scent and soaking it into say scent free cotton strips...the scent you used is no longer in liquid/fluid form ...get it?...Also any food not for human consumption is illegal... He told me he has seen guys start a fire and put a slow cooking breakfast on to cook....bacon...eggs...then go sit in their blind...a couple yards away...there is no law against cooking breakfast in the woods...as long as..it's edible if the ECO arrives ...Me I'd rather be in a tree!! I save bacon and grill grease...take smoking chips sold for grills...heat up grease mix good and hot...then pour it over the very dry smoking chips and let it all soak in....then take one of those cheap tail gate grills...clear a wide spot to dirt...light the chips cover with grill grate and climb in stand...just make sure your wearing gloves to handle anything.....with the honey burn ..I soak scent free old tee shirt strips ..I've soaked in honey put on a layer of smoking chips to light...this way I have a longer lasting scent ...smoke trail...I also look for honey trees...we have a very old large active honey tree they hit.....These tips were from a REG 9 Capt.

I make home made sauerkraut in the jar....so I just cut ...quarter...and core the cabbage and slice it a tad thicker than I do for the Kraut....while I'm slicing I have a pot of water on to boil...then put the sliced cabbage in boiling water and swish it around a bit...drain in a colander and run cold water over it...I pack it tight in Ziploc freezer bags and just before sealing... give it a squeeze and pour the rest of water out on one corner of the top and seal her shut...pretty simple Another thing I do is defrost and place in a hot cast iron skittle....that's all I cook with....in a little bacon grease and crumbled bacon...or you can use olive oil and real bacon bits...I add a little flavored vinegar...I make home make blk berry...Great...and a dash of sugar or honey...to taste...and stir fry to your liking ...mm..mm..good

I make this using cabbage that I sliced thin and blanched drain thoroughly and froze....freezing cabbage is easy and it tastes GREAT... 11/2 lbs venison ground and browned 1 med onion diced(lrg) and sauteed with meat 2 cans of tomato soup 2 quart bags of cabbage defrosted( 1 med-big head... sliced and blanched ..drained well) 1 cup of rice..measured before cooking( beef stock as half the water needed ...instead of butter) Parmesan cheese and garlic powder if you like spray a casserole dish.spread half a can of soup on bottom. layers........cabbage...then meat top with rice and sprinkle with cheese and some garlic powder add just enough water to remaining soup in can to make a slurry and spread over cheese....then repeat the layers using the second can of soup top of with a sprinkling of cheese last 10 min....350 for 40 minutes

Anybody have a decent Venison Chili recipe?
growalot replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
I just made chili last night...never cook using a recipe ...sight and taste ....but it's 3cans dark kidney and a can of wht beans....3-4 cans or home canned jars of diced tomatoes...5 lrg cloves of garlic....diced red and green bell and a can of mild chili peppers( roasted red peppers are great too) one med diced onion...red wine...worchestersauce and 3-4 Tbs of chili powder...blk pepper ...and well I never grind my deer meat before freezing...I defrost and put it in the food processor on grind and work it until it leaves the side of container(in 2 batches)...can't explain...but when frying it up it tastes like fine ground sirloin for some reason...1 1/2lbs...simmer to reduce nice and thick -
Kudos for sticking to your guns and everyone is entitled to an opinion...We don't have to agree and some can give theirs better than others.....time shows us which ones to just read and think "WHAT EVER!!!"...hahaha I hate that saying...sorry couldn't resist ;D Ya know so what Ted made this choice or that?...so what if he's a loud boisterous JA?...does any one know of a time when a hunter..non hunter...feminist... a conservative...liberal ..gay..Bi or military person was EVER tied down ...eyes taped open and hear aides plugged in ...to force them to listen or watch him?....I don't believe I've ever heard him read from a list, stating he's speaking for any one person...If ya don't like him so what? ..if ya do so what?....how can a sane person give another person they've never met ...that much power?...really?

Seperate game commision from dec?
growalot replied to G-Man's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Do you really think they could ever not have a hunting season? Really ? with all the life time hunting licenses sold what kind of legal s--t storm do you think skipping even 1 season would rain down on Albany?..and do you think in that event...... organizations across the country wouldn't hop in?...Do think that NYS could ever handle the financial whiplash that would occur should that happen?..Hell they can't get a Cabelas in the this state..what do you think BP and GMNT would do? We are talking $$$$...now the green means can puff and make things inconvenient for hunters but even they know they can't beat the almighty $$$$ Not to say we shouldn't be ever vigilant in our pursuit of a better system -

Thermacell insect repellent
growalot replied to 132 eight pointer's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I love the thing...but I also use the Off fan type....that is good if your sitting still and when you don't have to contend with black flies as well....the thermacell is great for the black flies we get each spring -
machine free food plot ?'s
growalot replied to arrow nocker's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I plant most my plots in the wooded area of my land and make sure they are surrounded by natural browse...dog wood brush...I had the DEC walk through to check the wood lot...that area I call the red oak flats..I have a bit over 200red oak..any ways...the Forester asked me how I kept it under such good control....Simple ..I mow...I have a harder time keeping my bramble patches under control -
OMG...I tried to read all 8 pages..with that high school foolishness thrown in the middle..really : ...lol I'm sorry but the entire post missed the BIGGEST point....The State of NY loves to put into place all kinds of "programs".then summarily stick their heads where the the sun never shines ..when it comes to logically over seeing such programs... I find the over sight of nuisance permits the biggest problem...why should a farmer be allowed to get payed big bucks for leases and then allowed to get free nuisance permits? When we have to pay for doe tags....Why is it that these deer don't have to be documented as a recovered kill...how many times does the DEC have to be told of gut shooting deer and shot and rot deals...and why is it that the government can't see that paying out thousands of dollars every year to farmers especially nurseries could in a few years be eliminated..... that spending several thousands of dollars out to high fence these places...most farms have both wooded and open farmed fields...fine fence just the fields...just the vineyards... ....Ya I know.... then we'd have a starving deer and turkey population..or would we...I know we'd have some poor farmers...Oopps not.... for then there would be the Devastating mobs of ground hogs to get $$$ for...yes ..Just thinking on this I digress into sarcasm...sorry

machine free food plot ?'s
growalot replied to arrow nocker's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Fantail...... I have 12plots right now and I'm adding more...honestly I don't think they cost me more than a couple of hundred to work now...but over the years I've bought a disc for our big JD and we have a bush hog...front end loader and backhoe....all that helps me out now...but I still do a major part of my plots by hand tilling and all of them I hand rake...I figure it's good exercise...besides I'm too cheap to get the york rake Mr B wanted to buy me...I figure if a middle age woman can do it with a hand tiller hand broad caster and a rake ...most any one can....heres some pics of differant plots.....These I did with just a tiller...rake...1 1/2 gal sprayer and a # push spreader -
Just got these off camera today ...it looks to be doing well in cold weather as well...but any movement in night pic or too close to cam day or night are blurred...happy for the money spent over 500 pics and still 85% battery in these temps...Changed cam angle...they are now digging up the HSG Sucraseed mix

Ultimate Plots For Turkeys?
growalot replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
We walk a sharp edge between luck and disaster here...for we have more than a thriving bug population....lucky that it keeps our turkey very happy and healthy and a disaster if they can't keep up with it or the increasing populations of mink... weasel...yote...feral cat..raccoon and skunk take a toll on eggs....we've already lost a great population of ruff grouse......the turkey hit the turnip plots in early spring...the smell of rotting turnips bring in all kinds of bugs and I have HSG and clover mix next to them....but our land literally looks like it's moving away from you while you walk...right after the grass hopper hatch...turkeys luv those tiny grass hoppers...... -
Ya know I said all bow season and most of late summer...there aren't the doe around like there use to be...ppl have got to open their eyes...hey they are the buck producers...I still feel that way and in my management I Usually only take one doe here at home and as many as I can get tags legally for down at camp...Well during gun I found out why I wasn't seeing them...as they traveled 15-16 doe and fawn out of my neighbors swamp just before dark..to feed in my plots...hhhmm now I'm on the land daily so I see whats whatand we have deer but I had no idea just how many so close...point is ppl can't go on what they see all the time....I took 2 doe this year off our place...and have plenty more on cam this january ...hitting those plots I'd rather they have natural browse and the plots to feed from...I do all tree trimming in late jan thru Febuary into March...the toughest time for them...

State $$ for food plots?
growalot replied to Localqdm's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
one was 200 per acre to cut all your poplar trees...and it was limited on funds and pretty much geared toward ppl on the "in" with DEC...least the just I got in phone calls I made last year.... -
machine free food plot ?'s
growalot replied to arrow nocker's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Everyone's different on their approach not necessarily better..that being said...I tend to look at things at another angle.....You need a soil test by all means...but ..in the mean time what you describe... I'd say you need to lime no matter what...read up on lime....it needs to have soil to particle contact to work and doesn't move through soil readily... so tilling in is important...but it also takes TIME to work....so I'd personally go in when the ground is still frozen this spring..in that freeze thaw time...just a little snow and lay down some Granular lime...the act of frost heaving and snow/rain in spring will get it in the ground...then as the soil tests advise lay down your quick acting lime and till in....2 weeks after you've done your FIRST spray down for weeds...because once you do that till it up... and wait a couple of weeks...the weed seed that has laid dormant will grow well...spray again Here's my feelings on annual verses perennial in new plots.... 1.) $$$..annual seed usually cost less per pound of seed 2.) The first year...or even 2 will be weed..labor intensive 3.)with an annual plot you can grow a spring/ summer... come back mid growth and just run a weed whacker over the top to get weeds before seed heads develope 4.) in the fall...you can go in and till in that summer plot and lay down a fall planting....add a bit more lime and a little fertilizer... Your improving your soil...not getting discouraged that the expensive seed you bought didn't grow as well as you expected...letting the deer know there is a new food source in town... perennial plots... 1.) more expensive 2.) less tolerant of weeds...You still need to mow or spray($$) to control 3.) much more intolerant of poor soil conditions 4.) much more common...clover grows every where...now yes some are tastier than others ...but deer don't always know that right away and will tend to go where they are use to eating 5.) once well established need less work...but if your using quick lime...you still need to add some lime every year as maintenance and a good low nitrogen fertilizer on clovers I personally take 3 years to get a new plot in shape to plant a perennial plot...but I have ROCKY soil...buckwheat has always been my go to as far as a new plot...but see..that works for me...not always the case for others...like a first planting of braccs...they aren't always hit at first...spring trictacal is good also -
Always...the plans are there but I'm the only one doing the work so time is'nt always on my side...I have an are I have wanted to plant but it has to have a fence put in first....It borders the property that I've had problems with the guys...trespassing...shooting at us...ect..ect.....I have several hundred feet of 8ft chain link to install...just haven't had the time to dig holes for the posts...I won't improve any of that area until the fence is up...and I have an inclosed shooting house built...so they don't know whether I'm there or not...But...I'm still expanding this field...

Three food plots on my property
growalot replied to First-light's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
That would be it...you wait they will find them..If your up there this winter you'll smell why....the deer mowed down mine early and ate the bulbs as well ...but some where immature and some so big...they only ate half... and the warm spell we had a couple of weeks ago got green growing...they are still digging them up.....I also plant in sections to attract....The pic shows...clover next to a new planting of turnips...next to buckwheat..that I later over seeded with turnips...as the turnips grew they tasted them as they ate the buckwheat...getting them use to it...when the frost killed the buck wheat there were the turnips...ready to go -
NY DEC: Southern Zone Deer Harvest Reports Up Slightly
growalot replied to HuntingNY's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Ya know that almost makes some scense...then you'd have to realize that NY's system...probably would be inadequate to handle the volume and crash...I mean really how many times did it go down with ppl just trying to buy a license.. -
Nice pics..I took these off our front porch with my cannon sure shot...the one was a foggy morning.....
