  1. Hey Grow, Considering bad things come in 3s. Broken nose then a hornet sting next to your eye, what's next? I would stay out of tree stands for a while if I were you.
  2. I have Leupolds on most of my guns and am extremely happy with them. Only had one issue in over 40 years of using them. I had a 3 x 9 that started to fog a little on a gun that was given to me, so maybe the previous owner dropped it or damaged it in some way that was not noticeable. I sent it back to Oregon and they replaced it with a new upgraded scope free of charge. Can't beat that for service!
  3. My wife's grandfather used to drive the dynamite truck for Dupont Explosives. We have many of the old wooden boxes that used to contain the dynamite that he delivered to the Lincoln Tunnel construction site. They are beautifully dove tailed and look almost new. They are pieces of Americana History. I never thought they were so valuable though.
  4. No hunting because of climate change, we will be ingesting Soylent Green.
  5. The goat is propped up behind an old tree stump to keep him from rolling down the steep slope. My legs are crossed and wedged behind him to keep me from sliding down the mountain also. He is an exceptional large goat with an estimated weight of 300 lbs. I also shot him later in the season when the coats are fully furred out for the winter which may make him look larger than he really is. Fully furred out billies make awesome full mounts. He made the book also.
  6. Wolves are protected in Saskatchewan, I posted a pic of the billy a few years ago. I'll see if I can find it.
  7. Yeah, good thing wolves are not known to climb ladders. Btw, heater body suits are awesome.
  8. He was a nice guy, so I never told his boss. I've learned over the years to never run from a bear. Either grizz or black. They are much faster than you.
  9. After over 40 years of hunting, four incidents come to mind. I was chasing a poacher on our land, through the woods when he turned and aimed his scoped rifle on me. Needless to say my life is not worth some jerks need to trespass and poach deer on land he knows that he is not to be on. The police were unable to find out who it was. I was hunting in a tree stand in Saskatchewan, temp was 30 below. A pack of wolves came in and stayed by me for most of the day. I am here to tell you that a howling pack of wolves is the most eerie sound that I have ever heard. While mountain goat hunting in British Columbia, I had a grizzly charge me and stopped at 20 yards. I turned to say something to my guide and saw him running away. Huh, he was supposed to be the one protecting me! I was in a tree stand hunting black bears in Maine many years ago. A sow with 2 cubs came in, the sow must have either winded me or sensed my presence. She walked under the tree I was in, sat down and growled and popped her teeth for about one hour till dark. My guide had to come in and chase her off. I didn't want to shoot her because of the cubs. The next day I went back to the same stand, she must have climbed the tree during the night because the bark was clawed off at the stand height where I was sitting. Gotta love our addiction to hunting!
  10. I think most of us landowners have had issues with trespassers / poaching on our properties. We all want to be courteous to neighbors and not provoke any problems. However if the land has been posted and you tell the neighbor that you do not want him or any of his buds on your land, that should be more than enough to keep them off. He knows the law, especially since he is a retired police officer. I get very upset when people think they are more privileged than others and want to take advantage of another person's hard and costly work which was necessary to purchase your property. I would remove the stand and place it on his side of your common property line. This will be his third warning notice.
  11. Heavy winds in my neck of the woods in the Catskills. Slept in and will wait for better weather. I don't enjoy hunting turkeys in those conditions. Congrats to all who scored today.
  12. Green is my favorite color. Good luck with your new tractor
  13. I feel for you pal. I've had too many experiences with kidney stones to count. Had all the different procedures, lithotripsy, lasers & stents. I'm breaking out in cold sweats writing this reply! I did 2 mountain goat hunts in BC with kidney stones. Drink lots of water with lemon juice, the acid in the juice helps to counteract the calcium build up of the stone. Hope you pass the fragments without too much discomfort.
  14. The Searchers with John Wayne & Natalie Wood filmed in Monument Valley. Can't improve on perfection. Jeramiah Johnson comes in second place
  15. I set one up & used it for the first time last season. Very comfortable & really enjoyed hunting from it. I found that one of the down sides is the ease and wanting to rotate and to see what's around me constantly, deer pick up the movement quickly so brush it in well. The three legs limit placement to level ground or you will be digging a hole to sink one of the legs to level things out. I'm looking forward to hunting from it again next season, shot 2 does during Ohio late muzz season at 130 yards each, rail makes a great gun rest. Enjoy it.
  16. What a great piece of equipment for new plots. Now if I could only afford one.
  17. I experimented with planting winter rye early spring last year. Hardly any of it geminated. I think the seed rotted before the ground warmed up enough. My advise is to wait for warmer weather.
  18. I think that huge 4 point would never have grown another point to make it legal in one of the " trophy units ". Just has inferior genetics. I'm sure a deer biologist would pull the trigger himself to take it out of the gene pool to prevent more of the same future bucks. This is a good example of age harvest vs antler size.
  19. I normally use lockons with climbing sticks, I like to set them 20' high between stalks of triple trees for concealment. I do agree that ladder stands are safer though. I did use a tripod stand on our lease in Ohio last year, I have to say that it is pretty cool being able to swivel 360 degrees and have a shooting rest also, just need to make sure you are covered up a bit.
  20. I also agree that still hunting requires much skill, woodsmanship & patience. In my opinion it's also the most enjoyable way to hunt. I've killed many bedded deer without them knowing that I was in their bedroom. I've never had the opportunity with a bow though, that would be the ultimate hunting accomplishment.
