This 4 point not legal in the NY antler restricted zones.
catskillkid replied to Rattler's topic in Deer Hunting
I think that huge 4 point would never have grown another point to make it legal in one of the " trophy units ". Just has inferior genetics. I'm sure a deer biologist would pull the trigger himself to take it out of the gene pool to prevent more of the same future bucks. This is a good example of age harvest vs antler size. -
I normally use lockons with climbing sticks, I like to set them 20' high between stalks of triple trees for concealment. I do agree that ladder stands are safer though. I did use a tripod stand on our lease in Ohio last year, I have to say that it is pretty cool being able to swivel 360 degrees and have a shooting rest also, just need to make sure you are covered up a bit.

I also agree that still hunting requires much skill, woodsmanship & patience. In my opinion it's also the most enjoyable way to hunt. I've killed many bedded deer without them knowing that I was in their bedroom. I've never had the opportunity with a bow though, that would be the ultimate hunting accomplishment.

catskillkid replied to fasteddie's topic in General Chit Chat
Is anyone in the Sidney / Franklin area, how much snow did we get? -
Best of luck!

Read all of your replies back to yourself. Seems like you made up your mind already. Go with your gut instinct and go with it. Have fun with your new machine!

Ziess Victory 10x42 binoculars
catskillkid replied to flio11's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
You need to look through a pair to understand. I have been using Ziess for over 30 years. I credit them for helping me with many animals taken. Great light gathering ability and extremely clear. They save you many foot steps out west and are great to use on the east coast too. -
Because I love hunting.

Good story, great buck. Congratulations

A friend of mine was "still" hunting on the ground when an animal stood up on 2 legs and ran / hopped away from him, he didn't shoot. The animal ran past another friend who shot and killed it. The animal was a doe that was missing its two front legs below the knees. I asked my first friend why he didn't shoot it when it first stood up, he replied that he thought it was a kangaroo. True story.

I shot a nice 6 point & doe in 4o on Saturday, temps were near 70f though. Buck was with a doe. Got lucky I guess. My other 3 friends didn't see much activity after hunting 3 days.

Hi Grow What turnip seed did you plant? My turnips haven't produced like that for years.

Another time I knocked on a person's door and accused the guy of tresspassing & hunting on my posted land. The guy denied it vehemently and started cursing at me. He asked why I thought it was him that I was after. I said because I followed your boot prints in the snow to this door. His wife said it to him best, " Your a Dumb Ass" She divorced him the next year.

I had the same issue on a property that I owned. A guy hung a stand on my land that was clearly posted. I know he had shot a few deer there. I called the local police to see what my rights were and asked for suggestions. The police said that the stand was now mine because it was on my land. I did remove it and left my phone # on the tree. The guy called me and met with me to retrieve his stand. He gave me a lot of Sh!! and told me that I was the person in the wrong. We almost came to blows but he backed down. I found out later that he lived down the street. I would have given him his stand back when we first met if he was a gentleman. I waited till the season was over and left it on his door step. Haven't heard or seen him since, that was 12 years ago.

A friend was on a dall sheep hunt in the Yukon this August. He and others were waiting at the float plane base dock. Jim Shockey arrived for a flight and couldn't even respond to my friends "hello". He stood alone with his back facing everyone without acknowledging them. I'll never watch his show again.

We keep our feeders out year round. Oh wait, this is an Ohio thread, right?

Saw a brood flock of a hen with her 8 poults yesterday morning. The youngsters were only the size of softballs, they looked too small to fly and roost. Must have been a very late hatch. Hope they make it through the winter.

What Were You Doing 15 Years Ago Tomorrow ?
catskillkid replied to Water Rat's topic in General Chit Chat
Was driving to Newark Airport to look at some work to price, was turned away at the terminal when the airport was shut down. Then watched the towers burn from the Jersey side of the river. A horrible day for America. I lost friends on that day. -
Got my 4O & 3M dmps today, looking forward to a great season.

How are the turnips coming along?
catskillkid replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Mine look like a lush green carpet. About 5" tall now. I just spread urea on the field last Sunday. Waiting for more rain now, we need it. -
