  1. I bought a blind and always felt restricted, felt like I was missing something by only being able to see out the windows. I scrapped the blind and built a ground blind. Decent size so able to put backpack on the ground, drinks, snacks all easily accessible. Have about 20 of them scattered throughout our hunting property, all built around trees so you can use a tree seat or other small type of folding seat. Good concealment when sitting, and if you stand up to stretch legs you've got the tree to lean against.
  2. Ithaca Deerslayer smoothbore and Federal Classic rifled slug.
  3. Just wondering if anyone has seen anything about leftover DMP's being available now Nov 1? I just looked on the DEC website. All I saw was for info from last year.
  4. Not only have we not have any snow, we haven't had a really cold spell during gun season. May get cold for a day or 2 but then we are back up the 50's
  5. Pizza and wings Thursday night. Spaghetti, raviolis and venison meatballs Friday and Saturday night. Eggs, bacon and sausage, biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Genoa salami and provolone sandwiches for lunches and other munchies in the backpack for all day sits. Can't wait!!!

    Camp

Heading up Thursday morning after work. Nap for a few hours then hunt the afternoon, Friday and the weekend. Fishing at night. Head home Sunday night. 9 of us total by the weekend. Walk right across the road. About 70 miles one way
  7. I shot a buck 3 years ago on a Saturday, same situation as you, quartering away. I know I should have put pin on the deer figuring where opposite shoulder would be but I didnt, put it right behind left shoulder. Had a pass through shot. I'll explain how I know later, besides that I got the arrow all covered in blood. Buck ran probably 60 yds. Through binoculars I could see blood coming out and running down leg. I let him go. Waited a good 1/2 hour, got down brought stand to my uncles house and went home and got my son. Came back after about an hour to go look for him with my uncle. By now it's about 11:00. We jumped that buck twice looking for him. There was blood everywhere, couldn't figure out how he was still alive. After the last time we jumped him we followed the blood trail up towards this thick patch up near my uncles house. We knew where he was going so we backed off. It was about 3pm at this point. Figured we'd wait til morning and come out first thing. Well he was still alive the next morning. Busted out of that thick stuff and took off almost on the same path he went in there on. We tracked him for a bit and lost his trail and blood close to a cut cornfield on my uncles property. Never regained the blood trail. My uncles buddy called him the following Friday night. His kid had just taken a nice 8 and wanted us to come see if it was the same deer. It was. My arrow had hit the left lung and the exit hole was in between the 2 front legs. I messed up. Never touched the other lung or heart. So yes they will live. Sorry so long, just brought back a memory I guess I wanted to share. Lol. Hope you find it!!
  8. Looking like warm one next weekend for the opening weekend of gun season. Calling for mid 60's down in Penn Yan where I hunt. Won't need to worry about bringing the warm clothes I guess but I'd rather be sitting in the woods bundled up in temps in the upper 30's to low 40's. Wonder how those temps will affect deer and hunters movements? Won't have to get up to move around to stay warm that's for sure.
  9. Ithaca Deerslayer. 12 ga. Simmons 8 pt scope. Federal classic rifled slugs
  10. Haven't tried with venison but boy do I love that stuff!!!
  11. I wouldn't want to take the chance. If bow falls out could result in damage to cams, limbs etc. I always just hook rope to stand and bow right before I'm ready to climb and pull it up once I'm up to where I want to go. Takes about 10 seconds to get bow up, unhooked and arrow on.
  12. Yeah I don't want a sub zero winter this year either. But I don't want all of hunting season to be in the 50's & 60's either. 30's and low 40's would be great!!
  13. I enjoyed the cold weather this weekend. Was great to be sitting in the stand in it. Really enjoyed it since what I'm seeing for the long range forcast is nothing but 50's & 60's right up until the week after gun season opens. I'm hoping for maybe a high of 35°,tops for the gun opener weekend. Hoping these weathermen or gals are wrong on this one and we get some cold tempo here over the next month.
  14. I've got a Summit viper. I love the stand. As others have said here, I have had issues with the platform sliding down the tree. But they were usually due to what others have said, a wet smooth bark tree. I'm not a big climber so trees with pegs leading to a hang on stand never really agreed with me. I have no issues climbing in this stand though. I have about 15 trees I use on the various properties I hunt, most of them are cherry trees. They have a rough bark which I like and they seem soft the cleats really seem to sink in the tree. I feel completely safe climbing in this stand and sitting in it. Watch the instruction video, USE YOUR HARNESS and you will be fine. The more you use it the easier it will become. Good luck and enjoy
  15. On page 62 of this year's hunting and trapping regulation book there is a question that asks what to do with your tag after you report your deer harvest and after the deer is cut up. Answer says that the tag must remain with the meat, not the carcass. You should be good to use the carcass to hunt for yotes as long as the tag is home with the meat.
  16. Good luck everyone. Probably going to be about a week before my son and I can get out, suck s it's a beautiful morning out there. Hoping to see some nice pics!!! Be safe!!!!
  17. I'm looking for a good venison chilli recipe if any one is willing to share. Looking for something that has a little kick but doesn't set the mouth on fire so it is not enjoyable to eat. I seem to have mis placed my recipe and just wanted to see if someone else had a pretty good recipe to try
  18. Nice buck! A great way to start the season. Congrats!!!
  19. My son & I both got ours on the 19th. Hope people that want to use theres starting tomorrow get them. Not sure what takes so long for them all to be sent out. They have it in there system who is a lifetime license holder, you would think they would have those printed and ready to mail the day licenses go on sale.
  20. My wife and I had spray foam insulation done on the house we built last year. Best decision we made for the home. Had our furnace set at 62 all winter and walked around in shorts and a tshirt. No cold drafts felt at all. Even with all the snow we got last winter we did not have 1 icicle on the house. Last week when it was in the upper 80's we didn't even turn the A/C on and it never got above 72 in the house. It is pricey to install but the savings on your fuel bill will be well worth it. With the big push on energy efficiency etc I think they should make it mandatory in all new home construction.
