  1. Hmmmm, cool. Hey, maybe countersunk tree taps?
  2. it looks like the hollow portion is off set.....if so, wouldn't drill for diddly. I was thinking a tree sap tap if it is offset....
  3. We went to Newfie in 2015, Patey and sons outfitter. Very high success rate, well organized, great people. we got two young bulls. The weather was horrible, we chose to take the first palmated bulls that showed and did so on the third day of the hunt (day one and two weather was socked in , couldn't hunt). That day between us we saw 7 shootable moose...including four monstrous cows, which were legal for us. I used an 8 mm mauser, one shot drop, my buddy his 30-06. Be prepared for ALOT of walking, wet weather, rough country. We loved it. The outfitter flew us in with his 1940s era bush plane, which we wouldn't have missed for nuthin! We are going back next year. The only thing we hope to do different...not necessarily will....is to see more of the beautiful country. Due to the weather and tagging out early, we chose to fly out early. we had pretty much 3 days travel time. First day CNY to the Maine border, overnighted,2nd day Maine to the ferry terminal in northern Nova Scotia (about 6-7 hrs driving, ), then the overnight ferry trip to Newfie with about a 6 hr drive to the outfitter and fly in to the camp.We scheduled a full two weeks gone to have a bit of leeway. Plan about 3 big (100 qt ) cooler per moose. we pulled a utility trailer for the purpose.
  4. Ya gotta hunt where the deer are.... One of my most successful stands was only about 75 foot off the road. Some of the best spots I have found recently are about 1/2 mile in, and in times gone by I wouldn't have blinked at that. I am not as young (hate saying that) as I was, so that is a consideration. In days gone by, a mile or more was fine. You also have to take into consideration your own safety, and getting the animal out. Stand sites with good sign within 15 minute or so walk are my preference now, only in that my time is more limited and less time walking is more time hunting.
  5. just a simple tongue click usually will get them to slow or stop without spooking them.
  6. There is never anything wrong about letting any deer walk, buck or doe. Shooting them "because I was expected to" is inexcusable...shooting a smallish one the last day of the season because otherwise you are going without venison....fine, but your call. A few years ago I passed on a beautiful fat mature doe on a beautiful sunny fall day, last or 2nd to last of the season, I forget....She was enjoying the morning as much as me, munching away on windfall apples and basking like a beauty....I saw no reason to ruin her day, or add a bunch of work to mine.
  7. With the very high water conditions in the 1000 Island region, we have been avoiding the area this summer. Can anyone update me as to how the area is for access recently? We are thinking of giving it a try this week end if the state docks are accessible : Wellesley Island being our preferred launch site.
  8. Don't do it unless desperate! Even then only pawn the ones you can do without. you will only get a fraction of what they are worth. At the very least you should at least get an estimate, then compare with a couple gun shops what they will give (which can vary greatly).
  9. I have Leupolds on almost everything I own, from .22-250 to 45-70 ( including three 1.5 x 5 powers...which I love for most things) Several years back I bought a used 1.5x5 online for my 45-70. Before mounting it I gave Leupold customer service a call to find out how much it would cost to have them check it out before mounting. Nothing. I was instructed to send it to them, they would return it to factory new specs and return it postage paid within the week. Cant beat that.
  10. That's our water supply: rain water to a couple of food grade drums. in the summer, I am happy to scrub up right at the barrel. In colder weather, I have a hot water system you heat on the stove, then pressurize like a spray bottle. It works well enough for how often it is used.
  11. I hate to disagree with the Wolf owners, but I found it to be....horrible. prone to rusting even when well maintained, sticky action, very cheaply put together. Having also owned Traditions and TC, I have to say TC has the best engineering/ quality, and was easiest to maintain. Go stainless if you can, being new to it, but treat it like it is blued. Stainless makes maintenance a bit easier, but does rust if given a chance.
  12. I stand corrected....I looked up your reference. Not that it makes a difference ( I no longer bowhunt). but I don't see why a conflict would exist...the handgun is for concealed carry (in my case), for self defence. The pistol I would use would be below minimal barrel length for hunting, not accessible, and not involved in the pursuit...therefore no conflict . Of course, those choosing to break the law would regardless of details.
  13. no offence, but paid 100.00 for a 1941 Steyr mfg. 98 in equal condition last dec.....
  14. the question about CC handgun comes up periodically....I am certain that it is legal for you to carry for self defence, concealed, when bowhunting. If I remember correctly the last time I read that clarifying it was either at the DEC website or hunting brochure. Anyway, if it is concealed, who knows, if the situation develops and you lawfully need it, isn't the bow a moot point? Myself, when I bowhunted, I also figured I could shoot my bow better than any handgun, and I already would have my bow out... if rifle hunting ,who needs the handgun? it is already loaded and in my hands. When younger and more foolish, I always carried, but realized it was only dead weight.
  15. You told the neighbor to remove it, and after an extended time the stuff is still there. Take it down. If they ask for it politely , give it back pleasantly, but reinforce that you are not allowing others on the land. My land is posted, to protect my interest:I recommend you do the same. my close neighbors and I have a fine working understanding that if we aren't there, we don't mind occ. wandering. It works well with no worries for us, but it isn't for every one.
  16. We have gone and participated in several Oswego County auctions. It varies by county, but any properties in Oswego County are owned clear by the county, no liens. The county clerks office is more than happy to help you look into the hx of any properties, value, etc, and you absolutely should go to any properties and walk them to know what you are getting into. of course you cant enter any secured buildings. There is no minimum bid, and amazing values can be had, but don't be surprised by some aggressive bidding. A property we thought we would walk away from was quickly way out of our bid range by double, The neighbor wanted, and was going to get..the property.
  17. Dang, that explains why no returns to my messages....
  18. I was raised on the principle that any buck was a trophy....(for that matter, any deer.) I certainly think older, thus bigger bucks must be wiser and more difficult to obtain, as there are fewer. For those truly passionate hunters who live for the long days and hard effort in the woods to obtain them, (the Bennoits of New England quickly come to mind) certainly I have all the respect in the world for their woods smarts and selectiveness. For the masses who are catered to by hunting TV celebrities and the showmanship of having the biggest and baddest, rack is merely one more way of showing off. Thus the popularity of guaranteed canned hunts.
  19. Cool. We don't have terrapins inland, but we have lots of snappers! A few years back my father in law plowed up a field adjacent to a wetland to plant clover, Within a week or so, there were literally dozens of snapping turtles laying eggs in the warm soil. On a side note, we were at a wedding yesterday, where the receptions lodge had a deck overhanging a pond/ wetland. A large snapping turtle had learned to cruise just below the deck looking for hand outs....he would slowly cruise one group of people looking up for a tidbit, then quickly paddle over to the next to do the same. I was amazed to see that behavior.
  20. Normally by then not bad, the mosquitos move in....with the weird weather, I would travel prepared for them. Thermocells work GREAT for black flies, mosquitos, etc. if not moving around.
  21. I was raised in a setting where any 8 point buck regardless of actual size was a real trophy. The more time spent in the woods was (and still is) part of the joy of being out doors with friends, family and "nature (to sound a bit too tree huggerish ). I guess that I am old fashioned when I still think the most important reason for deer hunting is for the meat. If just for the bones, it is just a show off. And yes, I have what would be considered a fair number of above average antler sets to show for it. But I also am just as happy to fill my freezer with a nice, fat doe. I have no issue per say with the pay to hunt principal....I have been to New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Georgia for hunting opportunities I don't have here, and even though not high fence, principle I guess is really the same. I considered going to a NY based shooting preserve to shoot a bison....(even the owner didn't call it a hunt, it was a meat shoot...), for the excellent large supply of meat for a better than store bought beef price. But I never considered it a hunt. What I have a problem with is folks under the guise of hunting trying like most every thing nowadays to finish the task as quick as possible with little effort, to show off animals artificially enhanced (however you want to call it...by introducing specialized gene lines for specific traits,, food products, nutrition, etc) " freaks". Animals that are not typical of the species. Most of the trophy animals shown by these breeders to me are grotesque abominations of what a natural deer is, and just because it has outrageously proportioned antlers does NOT mean for a second it is good for the animal. Along with the antler traits, what other hidden traits are passed....The beef bred for quick fattening also has slower metabolism, prone to obesity, weak kidneys, etc. etc. Nature is pretty damn good at taking care of its own. When we start messing with the way things are supposed to be, it is never good. (and please don't try to lecture on the genetics of disease resistance, etc. etc. this would get very long
  22. I used to hunt the area, a lot....living further away now, I havnet been there in years. the area is used heavily for dog trials, my guess is a lot of the brush work is geared for that.
  23. my best find ever was back in the mid 70s...I was riding my bike along the road when I found a watch lying in the middle of it. I picked it up and it was still running, but the crystal was broken. It turned out to be Seiko automatic watch, at that time (as I remember) going for about 200 bucks in the sears catalog. We had it cleaned and a new lens put in it, and I wore it for years. I still have it, and pulled it out a few years ago and decided to have a local watch repairman clean it up. He ruined it, and scratched the bezel to hell. Boy, was I mad....hated to pay to get it back, but I hated to part with it. I have owned a Seiko ever since. The 2nd best find was on my paper route....I saw a rifle muzzle sticking out of a garbage can. When I pulled it out, it was most of a Winchester 94, (missing the butt stock and a couple internals). Dad and I completed it, and I had it for years.
