  1. Over the years I've had a few different slate calls. My first was a Quaker Boy DD Adams Double Slate. It might have been a good call but between my and my different strikers I couldn't make it sing. My second one was also a Quaker Boy but the model didn't leave much of an impression on me.........My current one is from a now defunct company, Kits. They were from Niagara Falls, NY. A couple good guys ran it but not any longer. I don't believe it was too expensive?? What you need to do is try a bunch of them out and see which one works for you. A cheap one can work great, luck to you!
  2. I've been using that hooter for ten years. The kid is right, it works.
  3. So tonight I made venison burgers via the huntingny.com recipes graciously supplied by all the fine chefs here. I started with the finest ground venison this side Interstate 90. Mixed a couple fork fulls of minced garlic, one raw egg, a BIG shake of Italian breadcrumbs, a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce and then a couple shakes of Wegmans Parmigiano Reggiano shredded cheese. Mixed it all up, adding extra breadcrumbs to stiffen. Formed into patties and tossed in freezer for ten minutes. (not sure if that did anything) Got the grill up to about 425 degrees but before I tossed the burgers on, I brushed a little olive oil on each side. They came finished up outstanding! Thanks guys, we'll be doing them again for sure.
  4. Be all, end all deer killer............lightning bolt like death delivery..............I'll pass.
  5. I've never seen the long or short, just long rifle. I'm bored so I thought I'd snap a pic for you..........
  6. I'm a sucker for a high tech deal but I'm leery on this one............. http://buffalo.craigslist.org/spo/5503172448.html
  7. Nice gun Al. I have lots of love for the Leupold 2-7 scope also although it is an old love........for years it was all I used on my rifles and deer shotgun, the Ithaca Model 87 DSII. In recent years the 2.5-8 Leupold is my usual glass of choice. You can't go wrong with either one............. As far as the .280 goes, had a couple of those too. Actually both .280's were the same gun, just different serial numbers, Remington 700 KS lefty's. The first one I bought new in 1993 IIRC. Dick's Sporting Goods had just come to Buffalo and the gun dept was eager to please. They ordered one in for me at a decent price, $829 I used that gun for about 10 years before sending it down the road to help fund a NULA. Then, after second guessing THAT decision, a friend (and enabler) sold me another KS, exactly the same! Great price but after getting it in hand and shooting it a bit that one also got the boot. Between the 7mm-08 and 300WSM the .280 wasn't needed. (since when does NEED have anything to do with it?) Sometimes I have this little brain cramp and consider selling both the above mentioned guns (both NULA's) and getting either a .280 or (yikes) a 30-06 NULA. I like the two eighty...........too.
  8. I don't doubt that, after just so long you can tell who the good eggs are on a forum. Sometimes I'm talking with my wife and I'll be telling her about some folks on the web. I'll say "oh, so and so is a good guy" and she'll say "how in the hell do YOU know they're a good guy?" Just a gut feeling but so far it's been spot on................ On the OTHER hand, I'm sure some of the guys I think are douche nozzles are probably good guys when they get out from behind the keyboard. I could be wrong on that one though..........
  9. I don't know about you but I'd be "puckering" up in that situation. Must have been a rush...............

    Hello

Alright! We just double our CURRENT female posting population. Welcome Ladyhunter, hopefully you enjoy your time here.
  11. And on a brighter note, this picture (a 35mm that I snapped a picture of with my cell phone for here) is from one of our 2nd or 3rd dove hunts in PA. I know it wasn't the first trip because dad didn't go then. It was a spectacular September day and the shooting was fine! A memory that all of us cherish. This hunt was in the "mountainous" northern tier of Pennsylvania, just south of the New York border. Even where there don't appear to be many dove, there's plenty. It's not like they "stand out" like a deer, turkey, bear etc. These little burners blend in with their environment so well that it takes a little time to really recognize their silhouette on the wing, on a wire or in a tree. And then when they are on the ground, heck they are almost impossible to spot. Good times............
  12. Impress you, nahh. I'm just trying to help get dove hunting in New York for those decent people that someday might want to hunt them with their children or grandchildren. With you, shawnu and .......rob (The Three Stooges?) constantly dogging these dove threads I thought I'd show a little love. You guys have certainly made it clear you have a hard-on for Mike and that's fine, he is handling it well. Internet tough guys, they always amuse. Ever since our little spat over the turkey hunting you've been dogging me. I get it.......... Old shawnu, well he has had his ups and downs on here over the years. From his start he was always tangling with somebody. IIRC he was banned for a bit? Then he left for quite a while but he's been back now for what, a year or so? When he returned he started out real cordial and all but he's turned nasty again. Not surprising. Wasn't shawnu most of the driving force that pushed growie out of here? Oh yea, he was. .....rob? It isn't worth the ink........
  13. Mike, Since I already sent in $100 for this years ad, how about if I send in an additional $50 just to piss off these two hubcaps? I'll go write the check now and it'll go into tomorrows mail. Hopefully we can get a bigger ad or a second one paid for.
  14. You win...........there are no doves.
  15. Boy would that be a disaster! Why they feel the need to mess with a successful program is beyond me......
  16. Trust me, with all the dairy farms around the Park, that area is LOADED with dove. The thing is, if you don't care to look (and that's fine) you won't notice them. Oh the birds that you could find around those fields around Perry! Some guys would travel for them but plenty would hunt them in their own town. I've said it before and I'll say it again: you can not imagine what a wonderful bird they are to hunt. Then there is the table-fare bonus. There is a reason they are the number one game bird in America........
  17. This site (and guy) could school you guys that want to do a DIY hunt. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQOcUD2aFxEjc-_4JJBLYyg Lots of good info there...................
  18. Toes or no toes, those pics are winners.
  19. Too bad, we have quite a few around here. Some year 'round but much more have been coming up as the weather warms up. There really are a pile around in the fall. I've seen huge flocks of them in September up in Niagara County, much more than I ever saw in my 15+ years of hunting them successfully in Pennsylvania. That said, a flock of 40-60 birds hanging around a harvested crop field can give 3-4 a few days of great shooting. If I had 500 to 1000 hanging around I think it'd be overwhelming. I have a feeling there are more dove in your locale than your admitting to but I understand your beef......life goes on.
  20. Not sure how this thread got by me.........I don't know if I've "hunted" with any of them but have met a pile of them in person. Quite a few more I'd like to meet but a few I'll pass on...............

    I want

What are you thinking Dom, new or used? How big is your family?
  22. What's "enough" to matter? How many would be enough?
  23. It is really something how many are being spotted in the past couple years. I know, they've been "around" for years but dang, they seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately. Trail cams have been in use heavily for what, 10 years now? It sure seems like a heck of a population explosion to me.................
