So you think you know coyotes in NY? Do you?
Five Seasons replied to Rattler's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
The DEC stance on coyotes is pretty clear. I'd bet a large sum of money that the season is more related to reducing human/nature interaction. Give some breathing room to newly born fawns, polts and other animals that need a break from humans. There are serious issues out west right now with Elk right now because of this. Shed hunters and more recreators aren't giving them the normal time to recover from the fall rut and hunting pressure. Winter weakens, spring kills. that and people don't like gun fire. -

the reason is that they're anti-hunting. It's not a mystery. -

yes for a normal healthy person. The flu kills many who can't weather its storm. -

that's solid man. I'll give it a look if I ever get to it. -
Nobody is really in denial Rattler, in fact I haven't seen much of, if any at all where some member of this forum came out against the tournament. We have members here who don't deer hunt. Doesn't meant they don't support deer hunters. We have members who don't duck hunt. Doesn't mean they don't support duck hunters. We have members here who hunt for all sorts of reasons and maybe tournaments aren't their thing. Doesn't mean they're against coyote hunting or tournaments. But that's what started the fuss. I don't oppose you spending every waking minute of your life pursuing these dogs. I'm not against you. I don't think Chris is against you either. I would even like to see an open season on them. Somehow this thread went from a bunch of us being annoyed at anti-hunters, to another member calling out the rest of us hunters, to a made-up argument that coyotes are bad. When in fact the later part was only meant to educate you and others that you need to phrase your approach and reasoning behind the coyote hunt differently and that science does not support your reasoning for a war. Even in the video you posted it explains how they coyotes moved in once the wolf was eradicated. Doesn't that in and of itself tell you something about the incredibly cunning abilities of this animal? Which in the very least, would be nice to at least respect as you pursue it?

you dont attribute any of that loss to habitat loss? I know just about all the untitled/farmed fields near me are now either housing developments or corn fields. -

dude Nat Geo? They're one of the biggest promulgators of anti-hunting BS out there... -
yeah I didn't mean it that way, all I meant was that there's a good handful of us in Webster alone and less as we spread out further from the city. I thought the suggestion of the double tree right off 390 in Henrietta was a good one. Heck, I'd be in that for a few beers on a Friday night as a mini get together with the local Roc group separate from this one.
-
the 23rd is a Sunday. I'd bet a lot of us are out if it's a Sunday.
-
here's the issue with centrally located. A good chunk of us are in the Roc area. So you'd have a bunch of people going an hour or so, for the minority. I know this sounds like I'm being a dick, but you'll get more members if you're closer to where most of us in region 8 are.
-
I'm in for something close to the Roc. Friday nights are probably the best for me.

this is how I feel too. I know there are guys who fantasize about intruders and being the hero. I pray to god I never have to pull mine, let alone use it. especially in this state...

I've had my CC for 8 or so years now. I don't really go out in public often. Most of my days are spent going to and from work and the gym with social family and friend gatherings, none of which I carry. I know some believe this is a bad approach and "you never know". I don't disagree with that either, but I'm being honest. Typically if I'm traveling any decent distance, up to the mountains or we're going to a fair, festival, mall, movies, dinner etc though I'll throw the LCP in my pocket. Even my glock23 is too bulky for me to carry it. but the glock is a good truck/travel gun. With that out of the way, the reason "I" carry is 98% to protect my family and the other 2% is if I was put in a position where I could stop or limit harm to others, I'd like to think I would. I'll stress think though... because none of us truly know how we'd react in a situation until we're in it. And you can check your john wayne bs at the door. Nobody knows.

easier than you think. But if you have any size of family whatsoever it's very difficult to stay away. That was the case for my wife and I. Her mom's whole family (1 or 4), her dad's whole family (1 of 2), my mom's whole family (1 of 6) and dad (1 of 5). You can't replace that and it outweighs the shitty government and harsh winters.

do you think you'd have had an opportunity with lights? Seeing eyes and getting a shot? Just curious. That ATN is one of the only options I'd have within budget, but for that money I'd need it to work everytime. And yes I understand it's still affordable for NV, but it's still a lot of money. -

Corona Virus Thread

saw this on the news last night too. I think the point of the concern with this virus is, if it does spread like the flu, it's more deadly and those numbers would be exponentially higher. -
pretty interesting question to raise. They have very similar debates down south with hogs. Hog hunting has become a thing and generates revenue and wild game meat. On the other hand they're invasive and destroy farmland. I heard it put real well by a guy from Texas who was anti-hog in the sense that many of us are anti coyote: "If I had a magic button to press that would instantly eliminate all the hogs from the south would I press it? No" I think that's how I feel about coyotes. It's clear the numbers are high, it's clear many of us are divided. Some don't want to hunt them for lack of them providing anything or for how they resemble their pets. Others akin them to rats and pests. Others don't want them gone because they enjoy pursuing them. Personally I wouldn't want them gone. that howl is pretty cool.
