I still don't think it's as easy as you think. I have private land where a blind man could kill a doe any day. Public land is different. I can speak to hunting it for the first time last year. It's a lot of work and not easy. So the avearge joe, who is most of the tag buyers whether you believe it or not, does not shoot a big buck every year and is happy as pie with his scrub 6. more power to him.

deer also get used to certain behaviors and noises. so chances are this person might not be screwing anything up at all. be careful you dont end up losing recovery rights.

I have a cabin on uncas. Been going there for 30 years and I have to say as much as I love it, and it's my favorite place on earth the animal sign is bad and gets worse every year as the canopy grows and no fires, controlled burns or selective loging has allowed it to recover. Bears seem to be coming back. I cant say for sure there are no pheasants or grouse but I have never seen them in all the hiking i do and there aren't nearly the fields you find downstate. heck i see more squirrels in my backyard than i do up there.

if i was a betting man i would bet the land owner is more likely to side with the dog walker than the hunter. as a dog walker myself losing a daily stroll would be devastating and i can't see any owner wanting to take something like that away. The best chance you have is if the owners getting their garden eaten by deer or wants some venison.

deer hunting is all about odds. better gear, better land, scent free, more time etc. None are required to shoot a big buck. But they all help.

I think you're trapped in your own little world. This comes from a self admitted horn junky. 90% of those who buy tags maybe only sit a weekend or 2. They're happy with any deer. They would prefer a nice big buck of course but aren't going to lose sleep. They're not going to do a lot of work on their 1 or 2 ladder stands. They're not buying the latest greatest gear and they're happier having a good drink the night before at camp and sleeping in if it happens. The 10% or less that you're referring too is dedicated and skilled enough that they have no problem shooting nice bucks even on pressured land. So out of 200k tags sold your population is maybe 20k looking for big bucks. These 20k have serious money invested in the sport and they'll be just fine.

deer will use the same scrapes. We have a scrape the size of a car hood by one stand that has been hit for the last 30 years. What may alter their use is if the run leading to them is blocked or altered or your licking branch dies. You can keep a scrape active by keeping the run free and you can even cut a live limb and zip tie it to a branch to replace a dead licking branch. grab a stick or hand rake and ruff it up. pee in it or put some mock scrape in it. If it's still not being hit, then do a little scouting and see what you see. 1/2 the fun of deer hunting is the scouting.

you're mixing trophy hunting and just "hunting". when you say high dollar. I strongly disagree with you on where you believe it's heading. I wont disagree that more and more outfitters, ranches, farms etc. will continue to pop up as struggling farmers try to increase their income by leasing land, as more and more generations of farmers have kids who decide it's not for them. But there are literally millions of acres of state and federal land available and even more that is privately owned. Sure, the days of walking to the farm across the street after school may be gone, but you can still put a deer in the freezer with a hand me down gun and some wool pants and worn out boots.

wouldn't it be awesome if he showed up next weekend at daylight?

soo many variables. there is no correct answer. how often are you going to hunt? what is your harvest goal? what season and with what weapon? what sign/success/chances have you had already? all of these affect whether i'm going to shoot a doe or not. Truthfully I know the moment I walk in the woods what i'm prepared to take. All hunters should. Making hasty, last minute or second guessing decisions will lead to wounded deer. Be confident and know when you see a deer if you're going to shoot or not.

no way I'm shooting over 40 so that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the info though. You guys have been very helpful.

http://www.basspro.com/Garmin-GPSMAP-64s-Handheld-GPS-Unit/product/1401291127/ I have the st though not the s. So it includes terrain. Had a great sale last year which included the aerial maps 1 year subscription and a protective case for $250. They seem to go on sale regularly so wait for a good sale, or do a google search to find it cheaper. I've used it for a deer and turkey season plus some scouting this summer and wont leave home without it. it's an amazing tool. You can probably get an app for your phone for cheaper, but it'll be useless with a dead battery or poor cell service.

maybe because it's monday and I haven't had enough coffee yet but I just dont understand what point you're trying to make. You're a member, but don't like some of their practices? They don't save enough land? Is that a requirement for a group? I don't have the time to read their charter, but I would guess that's not part of it... so you should know what your money goes to before you write that check. And if you don't like it, then stop. I stopped giving my money to NYB 2 years ago.

I don't ever see them when hunting. Admitting I've never gone after them will calls either so I wont claim that I'm doing my part. Honestly, I just have a hard time hunting anything I'm not going to eat. If I ever get a crack while deer hunting I'll take it, but time is too short for me to specifically target them.

basically it. He said he wouldn't quote me and it could just add up and for me to know to be prepared for it. I could take it home and do a little bit at a time in my driveway or donate the truck, and i'm not prepared to be truckless. Just bought a brand new 15 explorer limited and do not want 2 car payments. inspections, another thing we don't have here. I was more just wondering because it would be annoying.

my goal is to do all the lines. I'm a pretty competent garage mechanic, but I also put a price on my time. In this case, doing all the lines even if I don't route them the factory way to get another 2 years out of the truck is all I want. Without a lift it's a pain in the ass job that i'm willing to pay for. My search of the net shows I can expect labor to be anywhere from 500 to 1500 and that does suck, and I think his point is that my truck is dying and wants to know if it's worth it... and with 2 weeks till opening day I need a truck! yeah if the guy doesn't fix it i'll do it myself. I probably wont go stainless as I dont expect the truck to last me that much longer, but at least I'll get the coated lines. I'm sure my fuel lines are close to shit and I know i have a small coolant leak. However if my fuel goes out I might not die where is if my brakes go out I might. this will be the second set of lines on this truck and it's amazing to see how many people have had this issue and the lack of GMs response to it. Claiming it's not a safety issue lol. I've heard a lot of guys do that too. Doesn't your light stay on in your dash though?

interesting i have some 3 blade chisel tips from 2 years ago and i dont believe they have that feature. doesn't matter here in MS anyhow, but good to know.
-
depends on the degree. but yeah i'll try to get near a slope to let it drain a little while i go get the cart. We have some nasty ravines in Tully and I've had some pretty comical gut jobs on some of those. Just picture a deer rolling when you don't want it to. haha.

We're on the same page. And your comment about the church's inability to flex really made me think in a way I haven't before. Because I understand and agree with it in many ways. At the same time I wonder aloud if losing thousands of followers and watching your flock slip away because of some man-made laws that came in to place thousands of years ago is for the greater good? Not that we should stop doing anything that Jesus said, but some of the stuff our pope's have "adopted" over the years. Personally I'm a big fan of Pope Francis for his understanding that everything and everyone must evolve or just like anything, it will wither away and die.

certainly many a hunter has gone poor by paying dues. What's so wrong with a group/club of like minded individuals hunting and practicing land management a certain way? It doesn't hurt you and there's no law making you do the same.

f8ck em. shoot a buck anyhow grow.

incredible spread on that 9. I actually like the non-perfectly symmetrical racks. that crab claw gives him some character.
