congrats on the buck. My parents are up there near Raquette and said it was pooring. Most hunters probably stayed in. Dedication pays off!

If It's Brown, It's Down..I Hate this term!
Five Seasons replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
i'm confused... you didn't talk to your gf for 2 days because she said that? that's pretty serious bro... I am not a "brown it's down" guy. But most research will tell you that shooting fawn does are actually the best thing to do for managing your property. I guess the only deer I ever take issue with is harvesting a button buck. And that goes for anyone other than new/youth hunters. New/youth should shoot anything that moves. Especially with a bow. Need to get your experience in. -

media driven paranoia. You should now all realize that how your acting is exactly how uneducated people act about gun control when the media scares them a little. Do your research before you freak. I have been on several conference calls with my company and very knowledgeable doctors. This is NOT an issue. You should NOT cancel your travel plans.

some good reviews on amazon. Thoughts? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012KJBR0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

perhaps our experiences with backyard deer are different, so I would argue the deer in my yard are a lot less jumpy then those in the woods. They see us everyday and have survived it. Again, I'll say congrats on filling the freezer, but I do not consider this "hunting". Filling the freezer is not why I enjoy hunting, but it's a big perk to it.

I don't know what happened here in 5 pages, but if your sole purpose is to fill the freezer and it's legal and you get a good shot than why not? It's not unethical in my book. I myself enjoy "the hunt" and would continue to hunt how most of us do, but don't see an issue with this either. Doe or trophy buck, i'm not sure it matters. I will add too that in the last 2 houses I've lived in I've had doe families and young bucks constantly in my yard. They're nice to watch and I probably wouldn't take them for that reason. But it's a personal choice that I wouldn't argue with someone else over for taking the opposite approach.

got my sierra stuff the other day. For $40 I can't say i'm upset but the midweight stuff is really thin. Now I haven't worn it yet, but I can't imagine it's going to replace my long johns.

I don't see myself doing it a lot. There are some small deer down south that aren't worth the money to send to the butcher. That said, I don't like wasting meat. This would be only a few a year max and no need for speed. But some of these look like they have plastic gears. I don't care about speed or sausage, but I want it to last. I'd like to stay under $200...

a lot of state parks prohibit non-hunters during hunting season. Not so here?

only other hunters steal spots, stands and cams. Why do these guys need silencers if they're going after 1 guy?

Assuming with grinders you get what you pay for? Are the $100 cabelas models just not worth it? I'd struggle spending $300 http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/browse/food-grinders/_/N-1101293+4294023386/Ne-4294023386/Ns-MIN_SALE_PRICE?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104798880%3Bcat104723280&WTz_st=GuidedNav&WTz_stype=GNU

Another Question....Yep, I might have a few....

there's some pretty uneducated remarks in this thread. I don't want to come off as pompous, but until you've worked in supply chain for an international company you have very little knowledge of how all this really works. -

you should pay less attention to where something is made and more to the reputation of the brand. Unless of course you're trying to buy american. But that doesn't mean quality either, but i can understand why someone would try to buy american. -
I put doctor sholls gelling inserts in all my boots. makes a big difference as well as a nice thick pair of boot socks too of course.

So as some of you know I moved south for work. We had a wedding in Rochester on 10/4. So I packed my gear and bow in my case and the wife, son and I flew home for 11 days. Burned the rest of my vacation time and an extra $25 each way to bring the bow but it was a small price to pay for some NY bowhunting (although a month too early). I hunted pretty hard for so early in the season. Mostly 8F, but a few days in 7J. A total of 5 morning and 4 evening sits. The first evening I saw deer but no shots. Tuesday morning i had several great shots at 3 doe but I was not going to fill the freezer till later in the week. Filling the freezer was an essential part of the mission. I am not sure what kind of hunting I will have on lightly scouted public land down here and my NY properties hold some excellent deer and a lot of doe. I do not have another shot at a deer till the following Monday morning. I had seen a real nice buck and a few smaller ones and even more doe, but none within bow range. I am now nervous I will not fill the freezer at all. The morning hunt allowed me to see a nice big shooter doe who walked directly head on towards me and then under my stand before leaving and not providing a shot. Son of gun. With a 4am wakeup call for our Tuesday morning flight I had no intentions of wanting to hunt Monday night. It was warm, it was windy and I didn't really want to shoot, track, gut and drag a deer the night before I left. I had everything to pack. Didn't have time to really clean up all the mess...But of course I did anyhow. I was in the stand at 3:30. Around 5pm I'm sitting there and i hear a crunch to my left. Sounds like the same f'n squirrel that's been around me all hunt. Well what do I see but a young doe. Not a real freezer filler, but a deer just the same at about 15 yards. I stand up. Grab the bow off the hanger, draw and let one fly down through the back, into a lung and out the guts (funny angle). She runs < 100 yards and piles up. I want to find her and get her out before it gets dark. Call my dad to get the cart and then I get down to go get her. She died quickly and nicely in the pines. Quick gut and a few minutes pass and dad's there to help. It's about 6:15 at this time and getting dark. For anyone who has ever hunted old pines you know that you can walk in them pretty well but you tend to snap and crack a lot of dead lower limbs to get through. Well we are dragging her out making all kinds of noise and talking about the stand and the hunt. We cross a small dried up ditch and pause. Talk some more and then just as we're about to move on I turn to see A nice 2.5 year old 7 pointer. Not 5 yards behind us on the run we're walking back on. WTF!? He is downwind as well and it was windy! "Dad... Dad." "what" "holy shit there's a buck behind us... Dad what do I do" "shh be quiet" He stands there for about 10 seconds looking at us totally unphased. This to me is a shooter buck. Of course I have no bow and arrow. I'm in the post hunt "I don't care" mode. He then walks up a parallel run and into the woods. Provided a nice 5 yard shot broadside, although in the dark it would have been tough. Totally unspooked the whole time. We stood there in shock and disbelief. My father has been hunting the better part of his 60 years and has never seen such a thing. I have heard stories and seen videos of bucks approaching downed bucks, but never this. Never this early either. All we can figure is that our crashing through the woods sounded like some bucks going at it and piqued his interest.... but still he was almost tame. It was wild. If you read my whole long story and found it interesting than thanks. Honestly I just had to write it down.

muck boots. There a few different styles but the only difference is the insulation level. I can't recommend them any higher. I have one pair going on 10+ years with no issues. They are worth the few extra bucks.

my advice is not to skimp. I'm not saying you need a Mathews but there are plenty of quality bows out there from trusted manufacturers. I would not buy a bow unsight unseen off amazon. Go to a shop. Buy within your budget. I know there are quality bows out there under $300. -

Any trespassers stand we have ever found has been removed and became ours. Our land is overly posted, they were not accidents. Tampering? That's messed up.

60* out and unpressured deer. Tell me it's the same in November? I would like to see the stats on those that also bowhunter. When I was 14 I played 3 sports, honor roll and was chasing girls. Hard to dedicate time to bowhunting.

Me too. For the price I figured I'd give it a whirl. If not, my long johns have got me this far just fine

Too warm and windy but it's my last sit in NY before I head back south. Jumped a doe on the way in which sucks...
