you're absolutely right when it comes to the area. The area I have been scouting for a while is not exactly open hardwoods but is full of tall straight trees without a lot of limbs. I agree that where I hunt on private land would make it next to impossible to use a climber. The hardwoods doesn't produce well there and the big guys are in the thick stuff and the pines.

Lost a tag once. The bright yellow saved me. If the back tags are camo why do we even need them?

I'm not sure it's a myth... there's several pretty good studies out there... even if it's a hair margin. The point I believe you're trying to make is that deer hunting from a blind or a stand in NY, it wont matter.

Remington Layoffs Announced

a promise he has no right to make. Like I've said, I'm in senior management in big business and these things have so much legal and marketing and planning that non-remington leadership will never know the truth. I'm just saying. -
i didn't even consider sticks. Unless I'm missing some different type of sticks, I have plenty of hang on stands with sticks on the private property i hunt. They take a good amount of time to setup, not including the lane cutting. I am spoiled by some really good stands with good approach trails and very detailed work so that you're up and in with little time and little noise. bow hangers and pull up ropes already done. The experience i had with my field and stream climber was partially out of lack of experience but it was just too loud and bulky for me. I do agree that with climbers you need the right tree and that can be a pain, bu I just cant imagine all those sticks and a hang on being easier?

do you have a stand over the pond? I've never hunted over a drinking area and always wondered how it would be.

I'm not sure we need to freak out in august. the season is still 40 days out. You will get your tags... that being said. Typical NYS blunder.

I'm hunting some public land for the first time this year. A few years ago I hunted Darien state park and bought the cheapest climber i could find at dicks. It's heavy, bulky and noisy. You get what you pay for. Any recommendations? So far I've heard good things about the lone wolf but at $419 that's a hard price to swallow.

Remington Layoffs Announced

There is some blame, but I agree. Mostly the gov't. Having worked in big business my whole life and having worked in the north and the south in management, I can assure you that companies like a good reason to move south. Cheaper labor, less taxes etc. Unions have a done a number on the north and so has the gov't. This is something Reminginton might have been planning anyhow and now can put a nice spin on it. -
I've never heard a single person say a .30-06 or anything around this caliber like .308 is bad for deer. Heck we've debated .223 and 300 win mag, but generally it all works haha. Most of what I've read on 30-06 vs 308 wont apply to anyone on this board as the differences in balistics aren't noticable till you get 1000+ yards out. So at that point I think you have to go with the most available/cheapest ammo in your area. the package deals are becoming more popular, but most of the scopes are junk. Most will say that you should spend more on your glass than your gun. There's a good deal on Leuopold VX-2's with a rebate now. I think a 3-9 is in the $300 range. With good care it should last you a real long time.

I saw a guy on state land put a small 6 in the hatch trunk of an older camaro. fit right in actually. I have a truck. Actually one of the bigger reasons i bought a truck.

cool vid!

i guess i misunderstood the "keep hunting" comment then. Waiting an hour so isn't so bad. I wait a while anyhow to let a deer die if I didn't see it go down. I guess I read it as someone hunting quite a while longer. idk...

totally agree. most of us spend a lot of days in the deer woods. To think shooting a bear isn't enough for a season or even a lifetime that you need to still wait so shoot some deer? I love taking a deer. Means I can stop freezing my ass off in the stand. I can take my time and get him dressed and hung. The sooner they're dressed and hung the better the meat can be. Back to the barn for some coffee or beer and some story telling. IDK, seems a little odd to shoot a big black bear and just leave it there...

Under Armour Gunpowder

for a minute i thought UA was getting into the ammo business haha. I love the fit and feel of most UA so I'm sure this stuff is great too. Just always hurts the wallet. -
when people get rain like that i cant help but wish God would redirect to the states going through droughts or wildfires.

the list of reasons are long and been repeated over and over. It is what it is. Some arguments are selfish, others have merit. There's no point in really talking about it anymore. At the end of the day I hope it brings more kids into the sport. I also hope these kids give the vertical bow a shot as they grow as hunters. I'd hate to see the vertical bow phased out.

Only if I was prepared and equipped to get it out. That's always been the thing preventing me from going on a hunt.

poor choice of words. it's in my pocket, and again it has gps. any iphone does. before the iphone days and still to this day, one of my family members knows which stand i'm in and when i plan to get out.

assuming this is it? You know why i participate. I'm passionate about the subject. Guess what, the safe act is a law too. Does that mean those opposed are just supposed to suck it up and get over it too? And I don't want to hear that's an extreme analogy either. While they're regulations on 2 different levels, at the end of the day the principal is the same. You do not have to just roll over and be happy with something because the government now made it legal. The NYCC is proof of that. They lost for years and kept fighting. What I recently had an issue with is this new guy coming into a thread dragging up an issue that was long dead and left alone by all us opposed to crossbows and calling us out for how we feel about it. Never been in one debate, has no idea why we feel why we do and where we stand on disabled hunters etc. There was no reason to do that. It's obvious i'm not the kind of guy who gets called out and doesn't say anything about it. Most "new guys" who stir up crap are usually considered trolls. I was given hell when I joined for my comment on shooting button bucks. I think Tug Hill Hunter even made the statement that not to worry i would just go away, but never did I attack a group or individual. If you enter a community and instantly start crap you better be in for the long haul and leave the personal attacks out of it.

Doc's a pretty solid mod. I'm not sure that comment was warranted.

i don't get it. what don't they like?

Blind, sit and wait or still hunt? (Rifle)
Five Seasons replied to Borngeechee's topic in Deer Hunting
I prefer to sit and wait. Especially during gun. Depends on your land. If there's a lot of pressure I'd be more reluctant to move as the deer are on edge and chances are some other hunter will push to you. Up in the northern zones where there's more open space and in some places less pressure I might treat it like turkey hunting and sit for a while then get up and move (VERY SLOWLY).
