Taking my Life in a New (old) Direction
Five Seasons replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
f*ck that b!tch and congrats on the ride! -
i think many, especially urbanites are used to the government or someone out there always watching out for their safety and well being. You get on this roller coaster, you will be safe. You work on this equipment at work, it'll be guarded and safe. This isn't always a bad thing. Safety is a good thing, but the great outdoors doesn't give a flying flock about your safety. There is no attendant out there, the mountain top doesn't have a gate around the edge. It's a sad result of our society trying to protect us... in that some forget much of this world isn't protected from your lack of understanding or preparedness. You could even point to some of the weather events that we have and ask why people who live on the coast aren't at least a little prepared for some of these events. Instead it's a finger point at the government and a "not my fault I got trapped in my house". That's a very general statement btw, and doesn't apply to everyone everywhere.

Congrats and good luck on the growing family. My oldest was born in August and that was a very short bow season for me. But I also needed that break and self-time away. Maybe you don't bow hunt, but you might find yourself going for a walk to clear your head. And either or is ok! You hunt how you want, when you want and don't let anyone tell you different!
-
You know what's kind of funny though. I've spent plenty of seasons passing dozens and dozens of doe. Then I've decided it's time to fill the freezer or this particular season I'll tag a doe early and all the sudden they're gone. It's like seeing turkey in the fall and deer in the spring. I swear somehow they know haha
-
100. An extra week in mosquito weather that requires a hunter to muck up his grounds a few weeks before bow opener and rush to process his kill isn't going to all the sudden get him to shoot a doe, when the same hunter wasn't doing so until post rut anyhow.
-
It's not a negative. It's just something I choose not to do. The same as some pass yearling bucks, some don't shoot buttons, some wont shoot a doe with fawns etc. The actual harvesting an animal is very far down on my list of reasons that I hunt. I eat everything I hunt, and that includes squirrel. We fry up bluegills etc. To shoot and donate is not something I like to do. Again, not casting any stones at those who do.
-
that's what i told my old man who is not exactly tech savy. Once I figured it out, I was good to go and happy and can help him through the process. He said I'm his guinea pig this year for cell cams haha.
-
That's just not me, and hopefully others can respect that. If I'm going to take a life it's for me and my family. Sure I might give some cuts or sausage to friends and extended family, but that's about it. I don't have issue with those who donate, just as I hope others understand that it's not for me to shoot and donate.

the browning setup app for cell cams leaves a lot to be desired. I just setup 3 and there are all sorts of quirks to be aware of. You need to setup your plan, register each camera, give it some time to activate etc. In the instructions it shows you how to test your signal. Go to lte info i believe. From there you can verify if you're at least getting a signal and then also be sure to setup your cam under cell in the strikeforce app. I set mine up offline initially as that part wasn't intuitive either.

grampy said it well though too, not everyone needs more than one deer. My dad is in this boat. Just him and my mom left and he'd obviously rather harvest a buck. Me? I could use 3 or 4 haha.
-
and this wont change a thing for those guys. I know I am specifically not hunting the season so I wont mess up my bow season. That said, I still shoot doe.

I don't hate the earn a buck

I don't think anyone is disputing that some areas of the state are overpopulated. But I think most of us also believe those areas also have restricted access. Either parks that don't allow hunting or vast tracks of private land that doesn't allow hunting. So sure you can put 10 swinging dicks on the 200 acres of farmers land, but all the smart deer will just hang out in the 15 acre park surrounded by homes next to it. It's not complicated.
-
right? Because if you can't get it done from 10/1-12/20 certainly those warm ass days in September will be the ticket! Well for one of my properties that's kinda true. the other has a son-in-law that walks all over like a... I'll just stop there. Trying to be a nicer person haha

yep love the dark ops. Browning's literature on the dark ops and cell cams is a little confusing but it seems to claim to be the same "invisible IR". I'm still running 2 of the exact same model you posted above as well. Only once did I have one "wig out" and take 1000 pictures in a row lol.
-
i'm a big browning fan as well. like any manufacturer, i've had some issues with some and others have been rockstars. I'm currently running 3 of their new ridgeline cell cam and despite a clunky and clumsy setup they are now functional and so far so good.

yeah if you look at the deer and bear hunting season link i posted above, there is nothing pending about it. shit is pretty clearly "law". to bitch some more, that orange law is stupid as well. Accidents are at an all time low, and if you want to mandate it on public land or on the ground, fine. But to require me to wear orange 30' in a tree on private land is more NY overreach without any logical explanation for backing it up, other than they want us to get beeped at and harassed more, which conflicts with their whole, here's more time to kill more deer philosophy... yet not understanding that it's an access issue, not time issue. end rant.
-
shit is horrible. I wont be out, and realize i can't control the neighbors or a few i share access with but hope to god they don't go out either. All the doe I have on cams right now all have spotted fawns.

jesus christ this passed? I f'n hate this state. Mandatory orange too??? https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html NEW Deer and Bear Hunting Opportunities and Requirements for 2021 1. Antlerless-only deer season in mid-September (9/11 - 9/19/2021) using firearms in WMUs 3M, 3R, 8A, 8F, 8G, 8N, and 9F, and using bowhunting equipment in WMUs 1C, 4J, and 8C. DMPs and DMAP tags only. 2. Daily hunting hours for deer and bear extended to 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. 3. Hunters must wear a fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink hat or vest when hunting deer or bear with a firearm. 4. Antlerless harvest allowed again during the early muzzleloader season in Northern Zone WMUs 6A, 6F, 6J. 5. Bear season in the Adirondacks is simplified by extending the regular season to cover the full hunting period. 6. 12- and 13-year old hunters may hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow in counties that passed a local law to participate in the opportunity. See Junior Big Game Hunting for a map of participating counties. 7. Holiday Deer Hunt is an extension of the late bow and muzzleloader season from December 26 - January 1 in the Southern Zone.

This is exactly why I left. I have reached a point in my career where pay is good and beyond what I ever thought I'd make. It's now more about satisfaction and personal enjoyment/fulfilment. Don't get me wrong, I don't grind for free, but the company I worked for didn't really give a sh!t about me or my job function and their normal reaction to this was just to throw money at upset people. That only works for so long. And to make it worse, this particular company actually talked all the talk and said all the right things. But when I got behind closed doors with the president it was clear they would never walk the walk. A guy can only deal with that for so long before it gets so frustrating that you start answering those headhunter linkedin messages.

don't we all? You can't beat his meat!

I recently changed jobs and that RSU hit was really hard. I built that into my new salary and also a signon bonus... but without getting into details, it was a lot of money and golden handcuffs is an excellent term to use haha.

yeah basically a whole indoor grow setup. tent, light, ventilation etc. It's not cheap but weed isn't great at growing outdoors in our climate, not to mention the whole winter bit lol. But even in the summer is very susceptible to certain diseases and pests.
-
given the challenges of outdoor grows, i think it'll be a fun inside winter project when hunting seasons over.
