  1. I use sit and down for when I am Goose or Duck hunting. It tells the dog not to move and conceals it better than a standing dog might in the blind or field edge. On top of that getting a dog to properly do a down command tells me my obidience is spot on. Whoa and sit are different commands used in different situations and if a dog ever sits on whoa it is corrected quickly. I have never had an issue with a dog sitting while on whoa.
  2. AHHH Hounds, totally different ballgame (that I do not train). I agree 100% on simple commands, Sit covers everything and the same goes for all other commands I use. I do chuckle when I see or hear someone giving their dog five commands before it can complete one. All that does is confuse the crap out of the dog and set it up for failure. Another one I find humorous is when guys use foreign languages to command dogs, not because it is different in the filed with other dogs, but because they think its cool and their dog can under stand other languages. I use the collar on the lowest setting to reinforce whoa, that is why it is called "stimulation", you don't always have to hammer and hack a dog to get what you want. Although I knew a guy that joked he started at the highest setting with his lab and worked his way down. I have my male trained so well around my bird pens that he automatically returns to heel as we pass. Funny stuff.
  3. I have never heard of that method Bowguy, I always follow the command-correct-command sequence. It doesn't matter if I correct with a leash, heeling stick or e-collar, that's how I do it. I use "leave it" or "no bird". I don't use no because it sounds close to whoa which is a different command I give. I will also sometimes allow a dog to make the mistake I want to correct so I can correct it. This lets them learn what not to do with reinforcement from me.
  4. Read this http://www.gundogsonline.com/Article/Beginning-Electronic-Collar-Training-Page1.htm If it is possible attend a collar clinic too. As far as breaking her from the bird pen, repetition and obedience are the key. I have a couple bird dogs and a bunch of different bird pens and they know to leave them alone with out loosing any drive.
  5. To refresh you asked if you could have your dog at your side while you hunt. All of us told you no. You didn't like that. You can track with a weapon because you are licensed. I would get any questions answered by the DEC in email form and bring that with you.
  6. Because it's fun watching you try and justify how you intend to break the law.
  7. I mentioned it being illegal one time, the above is pasted from the DEC. clear as a bell to every one but you.
  8. Especially because it doesn't sound like he has done any training. But what do we know.
  9. That blurb referered to not being able to hunt deer with dogs which as we have all tried to explain is completely different from tracking. It's plain and simple no dogs allowed while hunting, dogs and guns allowed while tracking.
  10. It's like you are trolling us. Unreal. Tell you what smart guy, go for it and let the Dec know what your plans are and then argue your interpretation to a judge.
  11. Yea that's it I don't know what I'm talking about. Don't listen to any one here. Don't bother asking if you don't like the answers you are given.
  12. Manner of Taking It is unlawful to: Take big game while the deer or bear is in water. Possess a firearm of any description when bowhunting or when accompanying a person bowhunting during special archery seasons. Make, set or use a salt lick on land inhabited by deer or bear. It is unlawful to hunt big game with: A firearm or bow aided by any artificial light or a laser that projects a beam toward the target. An autoloading firearm with a capacity of more than 6 shells (one which requires that the trigger be pulled separately for each shot), except an autoloading pistol with a barrel length of less than 8 inches. A firearm using rimfire ammunition. A shotgun of less than 20 gauge or any shotgun loaded with shells other than those carrying a single projectile. A bow with a draw weight of 35 lbs or less. Arrows with barbed broadheads; arrowheads less than 7/8 inches at the widest point or with less than 2 sharp cutting edges. Dogs. Aircraft of any kind. Bait.
  13. Nope there is no grey area, it's illegal. Tracking and hunting are two separate things that you can't mix together and do as you please.
  14. No you can't have a dog with you while you are deer hunting, plain and simple. No need to try and bend the rules, you can't do it.
  15. Don't be afraid to ask for permission for a single weekend too, then stop in after and give them a report. That way they'll know you are serious and not a bozo. Kids always help and can volunteer to help the land owners too. Tax maps are your friend, study them and go with knowledge of boundarys, names and addresses.
  16. Speaking from experience (unfortunately) be careful when landing them not to over bend the rod or you will break off a section of rod. I think Bass or Pan fishing in a nice open area is the best place to learn.
  17. They learned from the Great Prairie Chicken that it is best to remove them from the list so they can allow hunting of them eventually which helps gather money for improvements in habitat. One thing most don't realize is that if these birds hit the endangered list, vast tracts of Federal land would be shut down from access and private land would be limited as far as oil and gas drilling would be concerned. Remember the Owl that shut down the logging industry in the north west?
  18. Same here, we talk about it a lot but the reality is we need health benefits and retirement so we can do it when we are able to. For now we will do it part time and expand as we go. Next year meat goats on top of all the poultry we do now.
  19. What adult wouldn't get a kick out of it? I would sure love it. Although I saw a guy on Facebook do it on a riding mower, that looked pretty fun. haha
  20. Huh, I'll be dipped. I always suspected that but never looked into it at all. Glad I'm not alone, thanks for that tidbit.
