  1. you need to account for the path of the arrow at least into the chest cavity. hold every arrow within a 6" circle and you're probably good to hit two vital organs (double lung most likely) with the a deer very close to perfectly broadsided. keep them within a soft ball or 4" and you're good for a shot slightly quartering away too. the idea is your groups have to be smaller as angle to the deer changes in any way, such that you hit at least two vital organs. whatever your range ends up being that you can do that is what your effective range most likely is when starting. after that it's realizing all the crazy things that happen when deer react or not to a shot or what certain heads can do when hitting deer. everyone is different so if i just typed a yardage it'd be a half &^% guess.
  2. i ALWAYS hunt with a range finder. Shooting unknown yardage 3D competition makes you a good shot because you have a sense of how far it is. Especially cool if the competition puts you up in platforms within the trees. everyone i know though including myself finds nice level ground to stand at for routine practice. 3D can get you shooting up and down steep grades and standing on uneven ground. some just can't perform in that situation and groups open up a lot. in reality that's the situation you'll be in going to or from the stand or if stalking or still hunting.
  3. i picked up some Irish Setter rubber boots that are uninsulated they are awesome. i had a mishap where i got it hung up and it ripped a huge hole in the shin. it was all my fault that no boot could handle. i called them and they said policy wise they couldn't just replace them. i bought on clearance from Gander Mountain that's now closed and other issues on top of that. customer support talked with their product group though and got back to me that day. they gave me options and walked me through the best option to fix them on my own so i didn't have to replace them. they replaced a pair of Muck boots that i was happy with despite liberal company policy. i'm replacing Muck Artic Sports that crapped to bed next. Right now I've still got Muck Hoser boots i'm using. That boot is not warm enough for late season though.
  4. nice work. congrats on another one down. Friend of mine runs dogs and they're up to 31. Calling one in and taking it on film is an art in my opinion though and earns my respect 110%.
  5. alway hear many people toting accuracy and group sizes that seem unrealistic, especially in a hunting situation. i haven't shot much lately, but last several years i've got all year long and often. i've stacked arrows out to 100 yards in 2" groups on my best moments (not session of shooting). I would never tell anyone i'd ever expect that from me though. i've often had arrows touching, busted nocks, etc at 20 yards. may happen frequently but not a bar i'd set. if you do honestly expect that of yourself then show up with your hunting rig to the Vegas world championships, where the best in the world try every end for that kind of accuracy but can't despite getting damn close. for me i think anything less than 1 MOA in the bow world (i.e. 2" at 20 yrds, 4" at 40 yrds, etc.) is definitely exceptable and i'm cool as a cucumber with it. On my best (warm, calm, sunny) days i try hard to maintain 1/2 MOA groups. when that happens, i'm humbly owning the world i'm walking, but in the back of my mind shooting like s*&^% next time is a real possibility.
  6. yes. that decision axed a muzzle brake because they worded it "break" and ruled 7 rounds in a 10 round mag was arbitrary and unconstitutional. may have been something else too. i don't think they filed with SCOTUS at all, because numbers were split for justices and figured they wouldn't win and Skretny decision that shot down the challenge would've been upheld. if that's the case could they still file or has that opportunity sailed already? that's what i don't have a clue about.
  7. that foam target will never last and won't stop much once it's getting shot. i think you should at least look into a bag target. that said spend $120 to get a Rhino block from Rhinehart and you'll never buy another target again. it'll last you forever and stop anything.
  8. there was an on going suite climbing the court system but they called it off before it made it to the Supreme Court. basically justice scalia died that was pro gun at the time, splitting the justices to evenly split a decision. when that happens the previous lower level court decision is upheld. that decision came from here in NY so it said yea ARs that meet the Gov Cuomo's SafeAct definition of an assault weapon can be banned. I don't know of anything getting resurrected and brought back up. Maybe Moog knows but idk if filing again can start where things left off or not. I'm guessing no. otherwise, it would've been now that justice Gorsuch (pro-gun) has filled the vacancy.
  9. just north of the capital region we got somewhere around 7" when i stuck the tape into the snow throughout the driveway. oddly not far away they got barely 4". i guess a few isolated areas had pockets of heavier snow fall. down near Albany it rained/sleeted for some of it.
  10. i have to deal with ridiculously designed gas cans now because the Blitz ones that worked great aren't made anymore. idiots did something stupid and sued all the time. lawsuit that finally sent one of the last nails home was a guy that intended on stoking his already lit wood stove with a full can of gas. blew himself up and his young daughter that died in a horrible way. says right on there can molded into the can keep away from things like that and if i remember it even has "wood stoves" in the disclaimer. yet the dumb lump of charcoal won millions. there was almost a hundred other cases going too before the company basically shelled out nine figures to settle all of them and call it a good run before closing doors. it was a US company based in OK.
  11. depends on how stripped the upper and lower are that you're buying. some fit together a little better than others but all are the same platform and design. upper i'd have the barrel and carrier group already installed. things like sights and add-ons are added easily. most i know with iron sights go with top, rail mounted, ones that flip down and out of the way for mostly using optics.
  12. Just went to walmart last night for some groceries and things. still had lots of loose carbon arrows left. most are re-badged economy stuff but they did have Blood Sport Punisher 350 shafts with factory installed brass inserts and pre-cut to 29.5". clearance stickers were all mixed up. i checked price though and came out to $3.50 per finished arrow which is about 1/3 the usual price. so now i have a dozen more arrows.
  13. there's ton of options out there. you could do it piece by piece and not settle for a upper/lower combo. also i wouldn't weld or epoxy the mag to the lower to pin it. Use bolt/hardware with rubber washer and epoxied end threads or something similar so if the mag fails you don't have to damage the lower receiver to get it out and replace the mag. you'd cut or grind off the hardware that's permanently attaching them together. also i'd go with a wylde 223 rem/5.56 chamber versus just 5.56 NATO (less accuracy with 223 ammo) or 223 (can't fire 5.56 cheaper ammo due to pressure). i feel an ARs work better on sticks than a bi-pod. some setups with hills and terrain make for close shotgun shots, but setting a rifle down to pick up a shotgun isn't always ideal. M-lok forends are nice with an offset angled mount for a reflex style red dot. Magpul PRS stock is heavier but nice.
  14. bottom line is multiple wrongs don't make anything right. if someone is going fast just get out of the way and let them by or otherwise continue to drive as you should at your discretion. excessive speed isn't ever a good idea but speed limits have a safety factor. driving inappropriately and multi-tasking at acceptable speed as well as playing games is the major cause for accidents around here. you have no idea what the hell the other person(s) situation is, so you should drive as you should and let them do what they will. if you play games it only gets the other driver in the wrong bothered and leads to them driving more recklessly.
  15. i've always wondered what's most any of you do with a walk behind snowblower? i've got one sitting in the shed but never use it or get it ready. too much not to use a plow.
  16. in the office. we don't "close" for anything, but some work remotely from home if they feel the need. drove the wife into work not far from my office. snowmobile parked in garage ready to go. tractor with 6' back blade in another garage probably ready to go, as in battery is been lacking. just jump it or put the charger on it to start and be off plowing home. might have to go to the farm and plow too. busy busy. hope the sled doesn't sit.
  17. boat load of reasons why a deer must die; natural balance, food, people conflict, etc. no lust for blood or enjoyment comes from the actual death. watching it die sucks a little for the second or two that it sometimes takes. if anything it makes you appreciate what that animal was forced to give up for the reason it had to die. doesn't matter people in general are desensitized and ignorant to the fact that living creatures that call this earth home die for their simple needs in life. people who complain about deer auto collisions, people who have landscaping, people who grow food, people who eat meat, vegetarians, vegans, etc. are still connected. i'm kidding we should get our meat from a petri dish, GMO experiments, or from the store where it was made as everyone else already does.
  18. 365 days a year i'm involved with deer hunting some how. yet maybe only hunt 14 partial days or so out of the season for myself.
  19. not everyone drives safe and with good judgement yet you probably have gotten into your car more days then not driving to work, the store, or anywhere else. youth already have free reins when it comes to small game and target shooting when compared to hunting big game. big game is a much more controlled environment in my opinion. hunting safety stats with firearms are pretty good. we aren't sailing into uncharted waters. a vast majority of other states have lower ages restrictions then what we're even trying to get to with this bill.
  20. i have hot and sweet italian in the fridge. this year i left most in bulk casings i got where a real pain the in *&* and just too big. if i put it in casings i usually have a guy i know do it for me with the right equipment. i've been looking into stuffers a little. haven't gotten one so haven't ground venison with pork fat only here. ground together and then put in a mixer with a little water and the seasonings. i forget the ratio of fat to meat. i'm not the master mind behind it.
  21. i've never specifically hunted crows but they seem smart. any of them i took where when younger. i remember i had a 20ga with run of the mill 3" 7.5 shells. i had a crow fly over me. i dropped it so i thought. it fell, hit the ground with a thud right in front of me, and then just as fast took off flying feet over my head. started using a 12ga after that with a full choke or heavier shot. we'd even pop them with 22LR rifles so long as they almost on the ground. it was just another critter that was fair game to us kids out in the woods to be just out in the woods. i might have to get someone else and give it a go before spring.
  22. sounds like you're going to need a 20MOA base too if you're starting at 4-500.
  23. sounds like you need a couple more of those pillows Larry.
  24. i used to get the crazy version of the Cabelas master catalog sent to me. honestly i never ordered from a catalog though. i've called cabelas to have them not send me so many. without fail though i ramp up hundreds in cabelas bucks and go a while without spending any of it. they send me emails and every catalog they make, to get me to purchase something. i usually surf the bargain cave or club offers. then pull the trigger and get something free; optics, muzzleloader, processing equipment, lowrance fish finder/gps, etc.
