  1. i use scotch-brite pad for both and it seems to work just fine. go in one direction and not back and forth. as in pick the pad off the surface of the call. you'll have more consistency that way. that's what call makers have told me and seems to work well.
  2. i've just got a cheaper Promark VR drone. fly it higher, then i fight wind, battery dies, and then it's over in minutes. it does take a nack to stay oriented with camera and direction you're heading. i had lots of electric RC cars and trucks when younger. Flew a plane once and successfully. lift off to 4' elevation and then landed. flight time about 3 seconds! lol
  3. here in NY evil people add a "muzzle break". not sure what the intent is though and if that's the same as a muzzle brake or flash suppressor. might be a self destruction feature pointed out only in the text of the NY Safe Act. Never know what evil inventions are out there though.
  4. it's more the PITA of trimming around it all and having bone frags everywhere in the shoulders. it was just messy so i stopped. front shoulder always gets combined with other cuts for ground meat. i don't think i've ever weighed them out separately.
  5. congrats Moog! you've surpassed north korea's missile program! i only have one recurve right now that tosses something just under 600 grains from what i remember. compound setups vary between 3D and hunting. they're anything from 350 grains up to something just under 500 grains. been awhile since i touched my archery stuff or sat at my bench. i can't even get to my bench right now.
  6. not a fan any shot other than through the rib cage. too much wasted meat with a hit to the neck or square on the shoulder with any round considered for deer.
  7. i actually have a good track record with a 150gr Federal Fusion 30-06 round. i'm with ya. apparently 200+ lb bucks and 120-150 lb management doe are wild fire breathing beasts of legend. a large portion of it is them hunting in lush thick deer habitat and trying to beat the reality that no gun can truely conquer brush.
  8. it's my opinion that most deer are taken by the same small portion of hunters every year. they set a limit under what tags they have access to. DEC relies heavily on people being creatures of habit with some self control. DEC is effectively managing deer for numbers sure but i look at it much more as loosely monitoring the population. while many who work within the big game unit of DEC do hunt they aren't the ones pulling the trigger, we are.
  9. they'd think a 458 socom AR was just silly. they're more traditional. most use a 45-70 with 300+ gr. one is trying to get more reach. been messing around with a 338-06 and is now contemplating 375HH for some reason. i've used 300 win mag 180gr bullets on woodchucks and varmints and not far away. i've figured out a plain old '06 works just fine and saves money per pull.
  10. you'd fit right in with my inner circle for deer hunting. i use a 30-06 and they say at least to use the heaviest bullet for it. i shake my head at times.
  11. my experience is people take too long at the range and don't take enough time in a hunting situation. it just takes diligence and practice shooting live deer. i've mentored other hunters in a hunting situation getting them to be patient and it's like they're losing the sh*t. they have this mind set like if they don't shoot when the very first marginal opportunity arises they never get another one. actively preparing for the shot is different than actually shooting.
  12. by all means draw as early as you feel you need to and can hold it. if you're actively aiming for more than 5 seconds, in the competition world and personal experience, things go downhill in a hurry. 3-4 seconds is my sweet spot most of the time where the pin is floating and motion tightens up to dead nuts before the shot breaks. on a deer it's usually faster when i think about it but my point of aim is a little bigger so i'm less fussy.
  13. i spend more time in the woods but prefer lake for setting up home. taxes are higher but you'll get more out of it.
  14. i need to look into a bigger multi purpose rod to fish bigger water and relatively small fish down in florida maybe. all i have now is small bass rods. probably just get something through Cabelas.
  15. years ago i bought a boat load of KVD soft plastics infused with coffee and salt clearance out so much they practically gave them away. all shapes and sizes. i've been using them from small adirondack ponds to bigger lakes, even out in lake oneida. i got them from dick's. there's options out there other than Dick's when i run out but that won't be soon.
  16. it's a feel good crock of sh*t. if they really were concerned with public safety they'd stop selling handguns. they lead stats in guns used for crime and killing. i went in the latham store when this went down in they had no intentions of removing any of the Glocks or numerous other handguns that lined the cases around the whole department. they just removed most all semi-auto rifles and turned around all the tactial bolt guns so the wall still looked tactical without seeing a manual bolt on everyone. they still even had a mini-14 on the rack. again feel good pandering.
  17. i think wooly posted something about getting back a natural original color without the gloss look. reason i shared it. honestly, i think the golden oak looks really good despite it's glossy.
  18. my safe is in my dry but somewhat damp and unfinished basement. i use two things at once i've got a metal desiccant bead canister that can be recharged by putting it in the oven. also a remington plugin unit with desiccant beads. setup seems to work just fine. canister on the bottom and plugin toward the top. the canister goes a long time with the plugin seeming to keep up.
  19. thread in a stainless barrel that's not black and he'll be rocking back and forth looking for a safe space.
  20. i know of very successful hunters that won't shoot anything smaller than a 338-06, 45-70, or 375 H&H for whitetail and still aren't satisfied. lol if i had a 223 in my hands it'd be something like 200 yards or less in the WIDE OPEN. it'd also have to be a decent bullet too. to just barely get a pass thru. it's not going far if i do my part. there's better options out there though that even a kid can handle.
  21. i myself own just under 10 that i practice QDM on the best i can. it gets a lot of deer traffic in an area that has pretty low deer density for this WMU. i get trail cam photos of about every buck in the general area that eventually gets taken, including the rare some that are older that others talk about. also my parent's own a farm that's 328 contiguous acres. it's apart of a QDM co-op i coordinate basic very basic QDM efforts for that's almost 12,000 contiguous acres. it's hunted pretty hard by the extended family. a vast majority of the co-op properties are under 80 acres with many less than 30 acres that do well every year. not all acreage hunts the same and it's possible to have a small honey hole in a war zone that still produces great hunting if you go about it right.
  22. in case you find some that are sun bleached maybe try this to bring back color. has anyone tried it? I don't drink coffee. http://www.wideopenspaces.com/restore-color-to-your-old-shed-antlers-for-super-cheap/
  23. no but it still sucked and i feel behind. the concept of it is out dated. just change hours of operation if you need daylight.
  24. call me a savage but i like it all just about. hard to tell what's a favorite. i mean nothings safe unless my schedule to hunt it says otherwise. about everything i can think of i had a dish that was blow your mind good and have had it cooked where i'd assume go get fast food instead.
  25. this thread reminded me it's almost time for woodchuck season.
