I honestly think you'd have minimal buck kills that were mistaken for a doe in January. especially with mild winters like we've had this year where deer are less stressed much of buck population will still be holding head gear. I truly think there is really no way to fix access. only way to account for it is expanding on opportunity and more importantly getting more involved. if someone wants to shoot a doe in a problem area and they can't get a tag or it or have to pay $10 I think that's a problem. if you're going back for more then sure pay for an over the counter tag. if you're willing and want them you shouldn't be turned away. I also think many stop shooting doe when the opportunity is perfect because the structure in when we can use our tags is limiting. "i don't want to fill my either sex bow/ml tag with a doe, because then I can't shoot a buck 'til regular season." is a statement that's a problem. you should be able to fill any of them during any season you have paid the privilege to hunt in.

I don't mean to question your literacy when I say this, but not sure where I ever said it was ok. you seem to interpret it that way though, and that was not my intent. Fleeing laws aren't what could put him in prison for 10+ years, which I think would do more harm than good in this case. he's still earned him a stay and lots of punishment which I agree with.

I'd hope he lost the truck. I don't just mean in impound, I mean forever to be sold with the money going back to DEC or the ECO to pay for a portion of med bills at least. don't know enough about this stuff to have an idea if that might have been the case. maybe that housing arrangement would be good. I'd agree. I just think writing the kid off and a decade or so stay in big boy prison will only turn him into a criminal for life and cost us more money. I'd be entirely different if he squared the ECO up with the bumper and trying to kill him. i do think he should get a hard road ahead and be paying for it in some way every time that ECO gets up in the morning with a leg that aches.

I feel like I'm going to screw up around the eyes and tear ducts but staying close to the skull as you can seems to work. caping makes me nervous. maybe that sounds dumb but it does.

read through this and temporarily forgot what the original post was about. had one fumble with my TC ProHunter. had a fired barrel with 777 residue, from a full load of 150gr, that I meant to clean and forgot about for a few days. it was seized up with a little corrosion. I just about lost my lunch when I found out. I cleaned it real good then periodically went back over the off season cleaning it for good measure a few more times. I've talked to people from Montana Extreme before at a show but never pick some up. seemed like good stuff but figured I'd use up what I had first. Good to hear you got it all taken care of.

....and some here were bothered by the situation in NY. imagine if you're an outfitter in Wisconsin!

Young man didn't mean to run the ECO over but wanted to get away. I'm not ok with paying to feed and ruin him in prison. County jail time for each misdemeanor not to be served consecutively. Enough fines to make him forcibly pay for a years. Take the truck he was driving. Community service related to park and DEC enough to keep him busy when he's not working to also dig himself out financially, while paying for his own room and board. I'm sure that way his rap sheet will get him plenty of looks and less than respectful treatment for each hour of his years worth of service too. A decade down the road he'll still have a life but one he was taught to earn and not screw up in the process.

right now I've just got an 8' bench I built that I keep my archery and minimal gun stuff at. storage under and plywood back board. hopefully down the road i'll get some more room. i'll need it if I get into reloading too. looks great!

if you're going with your factory full or modified chokes then I'd go with Win Longbeard XR or Federal Hevi-shot with flight control wad. their designed around that type of choke constriction instead of extreme constriction like many turkey chokes out there. also they're denser shot so I'd go with #6 or #7 as you'll have more shot but they'll retain energy and penetration out to say 50 yards. the more open choke will more likely throw a more even pattern too. your barrel is crio'd and tighter than many so it helps this even with a more open choke. if you're thinking about buying a choke with a new load then look for one like PureGold or Rhino. they have a longer transition to reach constriction which helps to get a good a pattern. ported is good too unless you're going with Federal I mentioned. if going with either of those chokes hevi-13 #6 or the mag-blend works great too. that's what I think. on my Benelli I use PureGold .670 ported choke with only 3" 1-3/4oz Hevi-13 #6 and I'm getting 132 in the head and neck. 77 off to one side and 75 off to the side not in the head or neck. Total of 284 on an paper HS patterning target the size of a sheet of paper. that's at 35 yards. doesn't change much at all out further, but I don't have exact numbers.

i'll be putting together a list of questions to ask Hurst in case i get the opportunity to talk to him in the near future. in case there's a good question out there that i didn't really think of and would like to know for myself.... anyone have somewhat specific concise questions that didn't get answered?

i expected more would show up. that said my experience has shown me that these things often don't get a huge turn out. I would've been there if it wasn't 5 hours away. There's a lot of operational costs DEC is responsible for. DEC's funding might seem like a lot but IMO there's no way I could justify commenting without knowing the breakdown of their actual budget. There's no reason for the state (DEC) to be timid about how much they can spend on things like conservation and education. it'd be a waste of PR.

Think the ACI 1.5 is comparable but doesn't have a cheek piece. Also they're heavier I believe then an a5. I like the design better. Can't seem to get as comfortable and consistent with a thumb hole stock either despite my favorite rifle in the safe has one. That's partially blowing smoke though as I've not shot a rifle with an ACI stock. The gun has guaranteed functional accuracy out past 1700 yards. I'm fine with that. Not many places I can shoot that far anyway.

Oh he definitely should've known better and his decisions were a direct result of getting the ECO run over. Not condoning what he did in any degree. Just thinking his intentions were to just get out of there and not run anyone over. If that's the case I'd like to think he can still learn from this and not do time then hold the idea he should've ran over the ECO completely. If I'm an idiot for hoping any small resemblance of anything good can come out of this then so be it.

I'd tend to think disrespect and intentionally meaning to run the ECO over are very far apart with the later not being the case. Running the ECO over was probably a mistake. that said I hope the kid driver gets fit punishment. once it's all said and done and he's paid for his decisions, he drives it home. kid rolls up to the ECO's house on his own free will, takes his hat off before speaking to give a heart felt apology, and it's followed by the shaking of hands. Maybe even becomes ECO's biggest fan. That'd be a good ending to the story. seems to be events out of an old TV show compared to reality but then again it still happens I'm sure.

QDM programs and DEC can both do things the other can't when it comes to managing deer in NYS. in DEC's defense, QDM programs couldn't do as much as they are without resources from DEC, such as additional tags and ECO support among other things. DEC isn't perfect, but they do help some with QDM efforts.

Haven't been out much. Did give a friend a tour of my small property near beans behind the house. Showing him what I did and planned on doing for habitat stuff. We walked up on this rub. Seen bigger but don't have pictures. This was almost end of the season and I have good reason to believe he's still running. Notice the tine marks high above the main rub area where he was rubbing with his bases.

to bring this back down to shouldered artillery.... ​i can't go classic and iconic because any of my choices should be in a museum for all to enjoy. also it wouldn't be something not considered a piece of art. so i can't justify hunting with it. ​it'd have to be something i don't need to hunt with and that i would be hard pressed to justify spending the money on. therefore i pick a Gunwerks Verdict; 338 Norma, C04 tan camo McMillan A5 stock, stainless Sand colored Cerakote action and fluted barrel, box mag, Gunwerks directional muzzlebrake, and topped with Nightforce 5-25x56 ATACR F1 MOAR Zstop DigIllum scope. retail is about $10,788 for the "shooting system" so definitely a dream gun.

i knew of a guy that used old military surplus 308 fmj ammo for deer hunting. he claimed it could penetrate vitals no matter which way the deer was facing. he didn't recover many and those he did got a lot of meat wasted. I wouldn't ever condone using FMJ for hunting.

I've got an open faced spinning reel and bait casting reel. wife and daughter each have cheaper spin casting reels. the bait caster is setup with a weedless finesse worm KVD perfect plastic infused scent on a gamakatsu hook used for pitching and jigging in close. PITA to switch lures. most of the time I'm using the spinning reel and switching up lures or bait. don't remember poles sizes or specifics. KVD perfect plastics of different sizes with matching hooks is usually on my poles. fish a lot of cover laden ponds and lakes. got sick of reeling in trash and losing expensive crank baits. I'll take some pictures maybe when I get home.

I've seen a guy shoot rounds loaded with H4350. same loads just some sitting in the summer heat and others in a cooler with ice. he got differences of 80-100 fps. when I figure that into my 30-06 it's probably about a 4" difference at 400 yards with air temp ballistics and change in velocity from difference in powder temp. it's something I could work with for deer hunting but not making me feel all warm and fuzzy. lately much of my shots on deer are around 300 yards. if that difference was with my 223 shooting chucks that'd be not good. ...that's just change in ballistics. doesn't account for any change in accuracy/group size that 100 fps would do. maybe that's one of the most unstable? idk.

hope so. can't make the drive. when my group met with the region 4 biologist I thought it was informative on management from the DEC eye's. we also got to talk privately outside not in front of the public which helps get more usefully truthful unrehearsed answers. when DEC has public interaction like this I fully believe it's a great benefit to go hear what they have to say and speak your mind in a respective manner. telling them what to do will go in one ear and out the other. telling them what's worked or hasn't in your area and expressing any concerns is what they will pay attention too.

when I say hard back wall... I like a bow with draw stops that contact limbs.

you want a bow that is adjustable and easy to repeat form. not concerned about speed/performance or being too light of a draw weight. bows with an adjustable rotating module for draw length are great. otherwise you're buying modules often and then a new bow when the cam is at its max draw length. also a really nice hard back wall is great. helps them with muscle memory to repeat anchor points and keep good form. another thing release aids are often too long. spend extra to get one with a buckle for consistency and nylon web strap to the release head that can be shortened way up and let out as they grow. big targets and focus on hitting it to build their confidence. as they get older and have shot a little they might be inclined to develop bad habits. once this happens start giving them less arrows even down to one. they can shoot that one as many times as they want but it will put emphasis on making each shot count as they won't want to walk back and forth to the target for nothing. all this work well for us adults too.
