  1. still using the original Nikon Omega scope on my encore prohunter. that combo should serve you both well. muzzleloaders truly are versatile. smallest kid can get bow ranges out of 50 grains of powder and a 250+ grain sabot. or you can load it up to 150 gr that'll knock a heavy buck off his feet into a barrel roll.
  2. looks like i'll be there with a group. hope it's a good turn out and not talking to a bunch of legislative assistants.
  3. may not be 12' depending on the variety. still talking a young tree that isn't grown out at all and would maybe have a dozen apples at very most. i put $50+ because later in the season places sell them at around fair time for that much. they're whatever is left over though. usually over stock that are less desired but cross pollinate well. could easily double that if a place has to order what you want.

    Practicing

most of the time when it's windy the deer don't seem to be moving as much anyway. I've put on stalks and hunted leeward pockets of cover but it's tough hunting. windy days right before a storm front comes through and during late season on high energy food sources is pretty much it for me.

    Practicing

practice in whatever you'll hunt in. there will probably be a windy day just before a storm front rolls in that's good hunting. eliminate cross sectional area of your bow, like turning a stabilizer so fatter profile is left to right versus up and down. also don't shoot with your quiver on. if stalking carry it as close as you can until you have to be clipped in even then take another arrow out so it's ready to grab. for consistency shoot as i normally would. i don't can't my bow. when the wind picks up i back off the trigger and pull harder on the string or into the bow's "back wall". i hunt with a blazer vanes and a smaller diameter arrow which helps. practice and get a feel for how much the wind pushes your arrow. mostly it's the wind effecting your follow through though. ...that's my take and what works for me. sure there's more than one way to do it.
  6. depends on what you want to spend. you can get a 12 footer for $50+ per tree last i checked.
  7. i agree pruning is more of a march thing to do. weight might help as long as it won't break. thicker soft string like baler twine, that won't cut into tree under load, can be used too to prevent breaking somtimes. want limbs growing out not up, accept for your single center leader that's your strongest. you can use wood slat braces to ease branches down and outward otherwise. anything with just nitrogen, like Urea, is good for them when this young. also something carefully sprayed like 1yr ground clear to keep weeds away helps.
  8. that's just BS propaganda. I don't like him. I don't have to like him to vote for him though. I'm not voting for a friend I'm voting for a President. He'd be a better option than Clinton. His ego alone would have him put the very best in his cabinet/administration and have little reason not to fire them if they didn't do a good job. The only way Hillary would tell anyone the truth is if she tells you something different, as a compulsive lie, in regards to something she previously said, that she forgot was originally a lie.
  9. I could actually see Sanders picking the right VP and running on a another party ticket, and doing well. Sanders supporters are like early on Trump supporters there's no other option to them.
  10. that's when legislative body travels to Albany office. If it was during a weekend participants would be talking to the walls.... more than they already are when legislative body is there. some are actually on our side though.
  11. always wondered what would be better 3 to 4 fingers under.... or 3 under and 1 on top. I shoot 3 under and 1 up. left eye/right hand dominant. don't gap or aim with any part of the bow. pull up, as if the bow isn't even there, and shoot. every distance is like that. like throwing a baseball is the only way to describe it. problem is it's easy to get out of practice as I don't shoot it during the off season shooting a compound. takes some shooting well before hand to get back to where I left off the season before. I still have a Bear SuperKodiak to setup new from Bear factory. my old one freakishly delaminated. I think I might switch to just 3 under and see how it works.
  12. looks like some fun in the blind. nice pictures.
  13. away in Maine this weekend. won't get out until probably next weekend.
  14. being around the capital district and dealing with the state, you can't just tell them they're failing and what they NEED to do. it'll just promote selective hearing. dealing with any state entity you have to ignore the their persuasions that they've got everything under control. no state entity is going to be open about screwing up unless it's blatantly obvious to the general public. none of this deer management stuff is, even though some of us hunters can clearly see it. instead you relentlessly bring something up as a "concern by the public in general". also in open public meetings be polite and "put the spin" on your concern same as DEC does. others in the crowd may very well may back you up.
  15. i think the Crocs in orange are tacky. ....mine are in Max-4. no orange. way better.
  16. no caller was under me the few times I've had success with it. treestands were more of a bow stand setup. some openings to see a ways out. 2 of the setups the stand was facing away from where the turkeys were coming in. I agree though with any situation that if you can see the bird the bird can see you. i'll strike birds with other stuff but i mostly just use mouth diaphragm calls. ...forgot decoys out around 15 yards.
  17. if you're a deer hunter you should definitely attend one... preferably every year. great time.
  18. awesome.... I've tried looking for them used for a couple years. finally gave up. they seemed to hold their value more than I was willing to pay. might as well have bought a new one. shot multiple bows from them and seems along side any production bow they really spit the arrows out in a hurry for a trad bow. unless a widow is tuned way out of its sweet spot for brace height then they're deathly silent too. worth the money if you're willing to spend that much as are many other custom bows. almost feel like Pygmy looking at a classic high grade gun. thing's a gorgeous work of art. like the limbs. seems like most windows widows! I've seen are just black.
  19. .... the ladder stand is in a spot to kill a bird but it doubles as an observation stand that allows me to see over the knoll and down into the valley full of fields. spot toms working in a direction you can then get ahead of them by runnin' and gunnin'. that's also worked for me. killed my first bird years ago that way and spotting it from that spot.
  20. done it. birds move after they pitch down and might not be pitching down on your property. they can be patterned if a hunter or hunters don't convince them to take another route. I've got spots where they always come through. some in timber and others in open strutting areas like fields or logging roads. some locations it's hard to see very far sitting but not in a stand. especially if it's at a field edge with a view and a spot to dust. toms will pop out strut for anything that can view them and then disappear back into cover. problem is by now trees start to leaf out. 10 to 15' is all that's needed. any higher and visibility and shot opportunity sucks. I've got a ladder stand I guarantee I or someone else if I tag out will be in this spring.
  21. just surveyed the fridge.... - couple bottles Brown's Cherry Razz (only Brown's Beer I won't really drink but awesome to cook with for say pulled smoked venison) - 4 of a 6 pack of "Best Damn Rootbeer" beer (it was a gift, not really a fan compared to say Not Your Father's Rootbeer) - 3 bottles of ShockTop Shocolate Wheat (someone brought it. been in there a while. don't ever intend to drink it.) - dozen or so SamAdams Cold Snap - new growler of Switchback Brewery (Burlington, VT) Extra Pale Ale
  22. not entirely..... you've got to figure in recurve crossbows. Excalibur in my opinion makes very nice crossbows that are all recurve. The couple lowest end ones they make have the lightest limbs at 200lbs and they're rated for just over 305fps. that's a little sluggish in the crossbow world. all the rest are over 200lbs. so NY's laws now on the books make practically an entire manufacturer's line not legal to use. only reason is they didn't think things through and consult the industry before writing the law. typical NY policy and I'm not ok with that. I do think that something close to a 200 lb compound limit and 300 lb recurve limit for crossbows would work to allow what's currently out there for "run of the mill" offerings.
  23. we're talking bare bones and no special editions of any kind. otherwise you're way past $1k and possibly triple even that depending on serial number and what kind of "special edition" we're talking about.
