  1. That doesn't sound like he wheezed but actually blew meaning alarm. It's a short burst of air that's loud. If that's the case you're done. He knows you're there. I've made the sound back, circled downwind, walking slowly, and stomping with each step. Sometimes they come a little closer and hang around for another second. If you don't have a shot to begin with it doesn't do much good. It's better than nothing though. If they do something you do same. They almost get confused for a second because you're acting like they scared you. Works much better with a gun early on. It's tough with a bow as they're firing on all cylinders right then and can easily turn and burn as you release an arrow. If the buck was snort wheezing then snort wheeze back following by a aggressive drawn out grunt. But stop at an point if he acts like he heard you. If he's looking your way and then moves on like he's not really spooked then bleat at him once he starts walking.
  2. call me a pyro but I like a fire to hit the meat I eat.
  3. Got to love processing my own game and beef. I just had a couple burgers, seasoned with a special mix of mine. BEST OF ALL..... it was basically ground up short rib, main rib meat, rib-eye, and top sirloin steak. only did it because all the help was leaving me and they got enough to take with them. I'd post pictures but they're gone. anyone else here do their own?
  4. ....turkey I use a Benelli Supernova 12ga. ....any other small game I use a Mossberg 20ga.
  5. everything I've got. for big game it's usually my PSE Evo bow, then T/C Prohunter muzzleloader, and then my Browning Abolt II 30-06. Aside from that I've got other guns and bows I've hunted and harvested game with. Those are the main ones though in that order. For woodchucks and yotes I've got a Savage Model12 heavy barrel 223.
  6. all the nicer older bucks I've seen by bow season are on the move searching for that first doe in heat. tough to really nail down a pattern at least around here. I usually scout from a distance early even before the season starts and then move in pretty quickly but don't take a whole lot of risk in getting busted. first does are often older ones so get busted and they and the buck both won't hold that same pattern. so I guess both.
  7. almost any question is most certainly NOT a dumb question. I think you're being a little overly paranoid. almost all the time a warden is not going to know you're even in your blind or stand then. it's not like they'd be just strolling through your area for no reason. also there's things to do safety and otherwise that would plead your case, such as quietly unloading your gun or putting your arrow(s) back in your quiver. you shouldn't be walking around in the dark with a gun loaded or arrow nocked when it doesn't need to be anyway. another thing to add is nothing says you can't sit in a ground blind on your property with a weapon in the dark at least no state I know of. it's only when the warden can connect too many dots and your story doesn't add up that you'd need to worry. remember they aren't out to get everybody. it only seems that way because they're continuously looking and watching. heck many times wardens are at community hunting related or other events. introduce yourself and ask them.
  8. so far so good. we're called the Hoosick Area QDM co-op have a facebook page up and running. also we had our first board of directors meeting to set rules/guidelines. there's still a lot more involvement to come, including our first hunting season. really looking forward to the endeavor and learning more. honestly I haven't even been thinking about me shooting bigger bucks and have better hunting opposed to doing it for everyone else and my daughter when she grows up.
  9. I don't really know how to explain it but when critters aren't coming in except coons and squirrels, for me anyway, it's very boring. more so then without it. maybe you fixate on the small spot more idk. just what I've experienced I guess. that doesn't bother me nearly as much as the efforts it takes not to get busted in and out. I've belly crawed into a ground blind in the pitch dark just to make sure I didn't spook anything at the pile. deer stay after dark and so sit there until you think they're gone. many times they won't be and blow out of there. lol i'll hunt somewhere over bait again where it's legal but it's not all sunshine and big antlers. only experiences where with an outfitter that knew what they were doing too.
  10. for compounds I just use 2" blazers. I set them to a slight offset for outdoor 3D to maintain speed with less drag. I set them to a max helical (twisted around shaft) on hunting arrows to get more spin and stability for broadheads and less plaining within arrow flight.
  11. I've obviously hunted here with no bait and other places in the country with bait. hunting over a piles of corn or deer cane or whatever is no less ethical than hunting over a small food plot or next to a lone apple tree. you're trying to take advantage of the deer's need to eat. I will say hunting over bait can be very boring as is sitting over an empty food plot. i'll also say that I think it's ridiculous when some dump a pile of corn when a big corn field is within several hundred yards and expect it to work like a magical deer magnet. most of the time I feel mature deer don't come into bait until it's dark and then they eat it all! it's like they know how it got there.
  12. Seems like a nice sight with good features. Haven't used it though sorry. I use an HHA ultra single pin with the dial.
  13. I have one permanent stand, Four or so hangon stands, a climber, and a ground blind. Had a couple blinds crap to bed lately. Stand sites is more my thing as I usually prep spots for my climber. I've got a dozen for that on 350+ acres. That's with lots of fields too.
  14. Same here but that dang thing couldn't kill a pigeon crapping all over the barn worth a dang and it was as accurate as maybe one of those toy guns that shoots dimes or plastic discs. Made me as proficient as I am now which is a good thing. Dad drive home safety often. Heck the keys stayed in the gun cabinet lock for quick access. Got in trouble if we touched anything without asking and or put the keys away or somewhere else other than the lock. We turned out fine.
  15. They don't look that old. So they've it potential.
  16. Checking cams after work today. Nice bucks.
  17. Property in another country. Wouldn't do another country but Alaska instead. Great get away to during the summer to to decompress from NYC life. great fishing and everything else for game. Everything is expensive for land close to NYC. Id just buy land upstate. It's cheaper 5 hours north of the city and if it's undeveloped then taxes will be cheaper. Tow a camper with generator up for amenities. Buying a smaller piece here in NY so id look for land near a QDM co-op. Neighbors will watch your land more for ya as the warden presence. Also the hunting will be better and comparable to some big whitetail states in some co-ops.
  18. If my wife decides to hunt with a rifle shell probably use my 223.
  19. I don't really hunt in the fall. More focus during deer season. I've called them right on then. Boss hen usually gets rowdy to redirect the flock.
  20. .... Now I can constantly tweak my bows to make them shoot better and better. I can also maintain a tune while shooting non stop throughout the year.
  21. I wasn't content with the service in this area which is usually good. It was hit or miss. I ended up eventually purchasing everything I need to work on my own bows. The only thing I can't do is fully relax a bow to change limbs because of the press I have. I also can't cut arrows. Other than that I've got it all even building arrows that are square and true.
  22. You're buying used then off eBay or check out the PSE Bow packages at dicks sporting goods. The. You've got devastator arrows right now that are cheap but work.
  23. Lots if times. The chance is slim I think.
  24. Handful of Yearling spike to 6pts. About four two year olds ranging from 4pt to 8pt. I think there's one 3 yr old around just haven't gotten pictures yet.
