  1. 1.25 lb rifle trigger is really light. if I shot competition then I'd be okay with it but for a hunting rifle that is definitely light. I think my varmint rifle is a 2 lb pull. my browning abolt II stainless/walnut stalker I turned the trigger weight screw all the way down. it's probably around 3 lbs. I think it breaks pretty clean, with no creep, stacking, or take-up. lighter triggers do help, but only so much.
  2. Rhinehart makes a few blocks that will last you forever. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Archery/Targets/Foam-Block-Bag-Burlap-Targets%7C/pc/104791680/c/104693580/sc/104624280/i/103978980/Rinehart-RhinoBrute-Target/1579194.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffoam-block-bag-burlap-targets%2F_%2FN-1100047%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103978980%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104791680%253Bcat104693580%253Bcat104624280&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104791680%3Bcat104693580%3Bcat104624280%3Bcat103978980 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Archery/Targets/Foam-Block-Bag-Burlap-Targets%7C/pc/104791680/c/104693580/sc/104624280/i/103978980/Rinehart-RhinoBlock-XL-Target/1205243.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FN%3D1100047%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104791680%253Bcat104693580%253Bcat104624280&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104791680%3Bcat104693580%3Bcat104624280%3Bcat103978980 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Archery/Targets/Foam-Block-Bag-Burlap-Targets%7C/pc/104791680/c/104693580/sc/104624280/i/103978980/Rinehart-Woodland-Hunter-Target/1802687.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffoam-block-bag-burlap-targets%2F_%2FN-1100047%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103978980%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104791680%253Bcat104693580%253Bcat104624280&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104791680%3Bcat104693580%3Bcat104624280%3Bcat103978980 I think they even make this cheaper one for cabelas with the same foam... http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Archery/Targets/Foam-Block-Bag-Burlap-Targets%7C/pc/104791680/c/104693580/sc/104624280/i/103978980/Cabelas-Elite-Stop-Target/1356786.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FN%3D1100047%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104791680%253Bcat104693580%253Bcat104624280&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104791680%3Bcat104693580%3Bcat104624280%3Bcat103978980 I've used all kinds of brands and models of fused and layered foam targets and I hooked on rhineharts. I shoot all year.
  3. Im good at judging yardage especially on the ground I mostly hunt at. with a rangefinder I'm great though. make it a point to practice and hone your skills with the device instead of just using it. you'll never question yardage. I use a Nikon Riflehunter 1000 it's got a lighted display, angle compensation, and goes out to 1000 yards. I use it for hunting with a bow, when turkey hunting, with a muzzleloader, and with a rifle.
  4. Get a rhinehart and you'll have to check where you're hunting. Some have their own rules that don't allow it like here in pine bush preserve.
  5. I feel like the red oaks aren't like white oaks. I feel like reds are usually like that every other year or third year.
  6. Yea right now the word is simply 15" wide. Just have to get people thinking about it right now. More signed up. At 10,700+ acres. Even if some change their mind that's still a lot.
  7. public in 4J and private in 4C.... other public lands are a possibility.
  8. I'd say the 11pt is a really good 2 year old. isn't getting any muscle yet in the front end. the 8pt is 4+ would be my guess. either that or he was a porker for a 3 yr old and with huge antlers for his class to boot. so I lean toward 4+. I'm not a biologist though so what do I know.
  9. haven't really set goals yet still just getting people set on the concept. there's the recommendation of a 15" outside spread we've gotten from other co-ops. it's so big that I think rules/recommendations will be put out there with a period of so many weeks to get feedback negative or otherwise. if the majority concensus is accepting of it then that will be it. to members of the co-op will be ASKED to follow that. then after this first season we'll have meetings to see how things went and what should be changed. that's how I foresee it needing to go down. right now it's a mad dash to get those signed on that want to be and get the application for tags in. land owners also need to make sure they're "POSTED" on all sides. Don't put out QDM or QDMA signage. Just post it.
  10. good luck going after them. hope they don't relocate and change their range. great bucks in those pictures.
  11. yea it's a good article. I thought about posting it here but guess I've had other stuff going on and forgot about it. Way to stay on the ball!
  12. So had another meeting. It looks like there's a good response so far. 9000+acres signed up and we're not even really started yet. Still have to set up board with members, Bylaws, etc.
  13. you're probably alright. in the future I wouldn't worry about waxing part of the string under the cable guard or where there's serving. if the string isn't served around the top wheel get a friend to carefully help.
  14. No pictures but I've used them before. Down tree that worked as a pinch point and I tucked up into it. Rock ledge that made a funnel and used some pine limbs. Shot the buck in my avatar pic from behind a cedar limb and rebar blind on the side of a canyon. Closest I've had a deer to me was tucked into the edge of a brushy wooded island out in an alfalfa field. It was a stiff wind and the deer got six feet from me. I knew it was there and just about jumped as much as she finally did! lol Bottom line is they work better than anything else. Downside is you can blow up or burn out a spot quickly and easily. Next the deer start having you pinned as they come into view.
  15. There's some cool guests to meet there now for the grand opening.
  16. Never really had a bad experience. Anything I didn't like was understandable or justified. Next time I'm in buffalo I'll be there.
  17. Started when I was less than 10 so 20+ years. I lived the family farm most of that so there was something to hunt throughout the year.
  18. nope but I've long thought about getting one. Cabelas makes a 5000 rpm one and 8000 rpm one. I think I'd get the faster one plus get it with the shop vac attachement to keep the carbon dust from getting out of control.
  19. oh yea my fixed are in 10 yard increments starting with 20. some setups I've got 4 pins to get me out to 50 yards and others I've got 5 pins to get me to 60 yards.
  20. I still like the simplicity of fixed pins. I've always shot fixed pins with centering pin guard in peep instead of peep allows you to see the trajectory of your arrow and if you'll hit a branch or something. also I have the top 20 yard pin centered in the pin guard as that's the pin I'm usually using and so I can fit more of the deer in the sight window. however, it's not nearly as precise as dialing in yardage. I shoot over 300/330 on 3D courses with regularity. holding the pin on target easier than gapping between fixed pins. helps with focus and follow through. hunting with the single pin, if you're in the treestand leave it set for 20 or 25 yards and shoot it. holding a touch low or high to cover many yardages. if you've got time to dial then do it. I've setup my one bow with the HHA for both 3D and as a backup hunting bow so I was particular. i got the HHA with the dial instead of the slider. i think it's more precise, easier and smoother to adjust, and it'll incur less wear using gears opposed to slider part on part friction. It has a .010" fiber pin and think it is plenty bright enough but allows me to aim very precise. I also got the bigger 2" housing and shoot a 1/4" peep. it allows more light in and fits a more of the animal in the sight window/housing to get you on target quicker. quiver mounting was a little difficult but Tight spot makes a nice bracket that mounts between the sight and bow riser. it's got multiple holes to mount your quiver where you need it.

    Waxing

Ok lots of differing thoughts on this. I shoot competitively and hunt. How often you use it is dependent on a ton of things; shots taken, exposure to weather, exposure to dirt and debris, material, number of strands, etc. if you have to use a strap of leather or burn your bare fingers working it in youre messing up your string with heat and friction. Good wax will work in enough through use. You should use just enough to put a thin coat on the string for protection. if it's wet weather reapply. Bits of bark and stuff reapply. Dusty then reapply. I use BCY X-wax. They make the material used in most strings out there and it shows. The wax is as soft and workable as chap stick. I'll take an old shirt or something to strip the old wax off the string along with dirt and stuff it collected. Then once you do that reapply.
  22. Depends on where and how remote it is.
  23. It's all in balance and where the weight is on your setup. Most stabilizers dampen enough and function fine.
  24. Most of the time i don't wear either. Many times I do wear mesh mask. It gets a little annoying though. It helps but I've had deer many times under ten yards that didn't notice. With nothing but my bare face.
